Obviously he didnt have to make a foul on the shoot. But Kobe received the ball, passed the ball, received the ball again, then dribbled Rip twice, he lost 5 seconds, and he shot with just 3.1 seconds left. They had to make a foul when he was dribbiling waiting for the time to reach 1-2 seconds. 2 FT. 2-0 and first title for Larry Brown against the Lakers.

C'mon now, have you ever played bball in Europe? (let's say in Italy, Spain or Greece). Here there's no need to make a timeout. Everybody knows that +3 pts at 10' till the end is the perfect situation to make a foul (expecially considering that Kobe failed an important FT a couple of seconds before). Lakers go for 2 FT, then Pistons go for 2 FT (with their best shooter receiving the ball) and it's over. 2-0 and Champions.
