upcoming DVD's

July 20, 2004 - The most common letters received here at IGN DVD is questions on when films and TV shows will be released on DVD. Some titles are requested over and over. I can answer it once in a mailbag and two weeks later someone else is asking.

So I created this list, which will be readily available, as a reference point for as many release titles as possible. For future questions, use this link, so it goes into the proper folder. Please include the studio with your title request. I hope to keep it updated regularly.

Please read this list before asking about a title! People were asking me before checking the list, when the answer is there. I've removed some that have been heavily covered, ranging from Seinfeld to Van Helsing because they are in the Previews section and have been widely covered here and elsewhere.

And now, the rumor list. Please remember this is mostly rumor and gossip with some occasional fact thrown in there. Nothing in here is religion, unless I cite a studio source.

A lot of TV shows aren't on DVD for two reasons: syndication rights and music rights. When shows are sold to syndication, the syndicators get that property for a set amount of time. A newer show that's just been sold to syndication might be locked up for a while.

As for musical rights, that's the case with a lot of TV shows, like Saturday Night Live. In the case of In Living Color Season One, they just cut the artists out. But when there's a band or music, expect delays.

This list will be sorted in descending order of popularity. The newest additions are at the top.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Battle Royale: Toei still refuses to allow an American release. The reason given was (get this) they were afraid of American reaction if the movie was seen. Like anything from Miike is any better? The Tartan release is getting wider distribution in the U.S., though. I've seen it on the shelves of two large DVD stores here in Los Angeles (Amoeba Music and Laser Blazer).

Song of the South: HUGE tug-of-war over this one. Some within Disney want to release it, since it has not had an official release in two decades. It's the most wanted Disney title on Amazon. Leonard Maltin and Roy Disney want it released, while Roger Ebert and (most importantly) Michael Eisner want it in the vault. Eisner consulted with the NAACP over a release and the group objected, so he's obliging their wishes.

Anchorman: December 28.

King Arthur: December

Luther: December

Shrek 2: November 5

Spider-Man 2: November 30

Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban: November 23.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story: November 9

The Terminal: November 23

White Chicks: November

The Chronicles of Riddick: November

The Day After Tomorrow: October 5

Troy: October 12

Fahrenheit 9/11: October 5, Sony is distributing.

The Stepford Wives: October

Super Size Me: September 28, Sony is distributing.

Other titles

Daredevil Director's Cut: Delayed because business wasn't good. Might be revisited when Elektra comes out.

The Untouchables: Special Collector's Edition: October 5

Dawn of the Dead: Announced for October 5.

Charmed: Some time in 2005

Babylon 5: Crusade: In 2005

In Cold Blood: Delayed due to Robert Blake's legal situation.

The High and the Mighty: John Wayne's son Michael refused to allow it to be released, but with his recent passing, whomever is now in charge of the Wayne estate may change that.

Hearts Of Darkness: A Filmaker's Apocalypse: Stuck in limbo due to Francis Ford Coppolla's disagreement over some shots.

Monster Squad: Anchor Bay is rumored to be working on it.

Eddie Murphy: Delirious/Comedian/Raw: Murphy has the rights to the first two titles and won't allow them to be released now that he aspires to be the new Bill Cosby. Paramount is releasing Raw later this year.

Heat SE: Due in July/August, before GoodFellas.

Superman II: Warner has said in a HTF chat that it has no plans to re-issue the film at this time.

The O.C.: Being worked on. Warner would only say it's coming out in the fall.

The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.: No plans, as per Warner.

Twin Peaks: Rights dispute is tying things up.

Star Trek Generations: Collector's Edition: This year.

Star Trek First Contact: Collector's Edition: Next year.

Mad Max/The Road Warrior: Supposedly special editions are in the works.

Batman, Batman Returns: In prep now, to be released at the same time as the Christopher Nolan/Christian Bale film Batman Begins next year.

Office Space SE: It's been widely reported that Mike Judge and Fox are playing high/low money games and neither will budge. So until they work out financial terms, this goes nowhere.

Orgazmo SE: Is being worked on, the official site is back up (OrgazmoDVD.com) no release date.

Robin Hood: Men in Tights: An SE is reportedly planned, but no word beyond that.

South Park: BL&U SE: Paramount is working on a new special edition but there is no release date.

Blade Runner SE: It's in the works, but it's a rather delicate legal situation so at this point, silence is actually golden and good for the process.

The Game SE: Was being worked on, no word.

True Lies: SE: Delayed first due to 9/11 and now Cameron's and Schwarzenegger's availability.

Newsradio - There's a legal/rights conflict, so no word.

Beetlejuice SE: In the works, all dependent on Tim Burton's availability.

The African Queen: Being restored, possibly by Lowry.

Event Horizon SE: It's happening in R2, but no word here.

THX-1138: 2-disc SE due in September, restored by Lowry.

Raising Arizona SE Not on the radar.

Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place: Spelling is reportedly waiting to see how Charlie's Angels sells, and there are musical rights issues with 90210 as it had a lot of musical guests.

The New Adventures of Lois and Clark: In discussions.

Crimson Tide SE and Enemy of the State SE: Both are Tony Scott titles that were in production but delayed, they might come with next Tony Scott movie, either Man On Fire or Emma's War, due next year. Neither is expected to be elaborate, just anamorphic transfers and a few extras.

Hamlet (Brannagh's four-hour version): Rights problems, lawyers are working it out.

Space: Above and Beyond: Work is beginning on it.

Flash Gordon: No word but there is a nice R2 SE.

King Kong - Being worked on, delayed from last year, now delayed until the Peter Jackson version comes out.

The Jazz Singer: Being restored.

The Wonder Years: Hung up over music rights and royalties.

Casino - Reportedly being worked on, nothing definite.

A Fistful of Dollars and A Few Dollars More: There's talk, it will eventually happen. Probably depends on how well the Collector's Edition of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly sells.

The Abyss - Been talked about, nothing planned.

The Frighteners: The DVD sucks but the laserdisc version is excellent. Eventually all Jackson films will be revisited with special editions, but Peter is a busy man these days
