He has to buid up a large fanbase now that he's hot, so that he can be supported when his career matures.  That's why he's doing things with everybody from Mobb Deep to Brandy, from Hoobastank to Maroon 5.  The more people know of him, the more likely they are to check his music and keep checking for him when he's not as popular in the mainstream.
