What I don't get is why 3000? That's hardly a record worth cementing your career on. 3000 hits wouldn't even put you in the top 20 of the all time list. It would be a tie for 25th. They should have called Mr. 5000 so he is by far the greatest hitter of all time, or at the very least Mr. 4000 so he is in the top 3 with  Cobb and Rose, and the only 4000 hitter other than those two. To me and most baseball fans a real ball player bragging about 3000 hits doesn't mean shit. It'd be like bragging about a 30 homerun season, or a .300 average. I just don't see how there could be so much fuss over it, unless the writers aren't baseball fans. Then I understand.

Did you watch the movie? In the movie, he just plays a guy trying to eek into the hall of fame... he's not the greatest of all time or anything.  So to me, it makes more sense from a realistic point of view.  After all, if he was the greatest of all time, he would have been able to come back to ANY team.. but he's kind of a milwaulkee guy, and they barely let him back on the team, and he's just trying to get his 3000 so he can barely get in the hall of fame.  I like it better that way, it'd be pretty unrealistic if they made him the greatest.

I would've watched the movie but you had already ruined it for me when you said he got shot by a crazy fan. lol. As for the 3000 hits thing, that is never a garauntee into the hall of fame. If he was hall of fame bound then 2997 or 3000 would make no difference.

As for saying he would be the greatest. The most hits doesn't mean that. Rose has more hits than Cobb but Rose is no where near as good a player.

Now you really ruined it for me. I was looking forward to seeing the guy, that makes 3000 hits seem like something special, get shot. 3000 hits aint shit compared to 4 touchdowns in one game.
