that's the textbook thing to do, the only way you can find out if it's the right thing is if his condition improves and he no longer things about suicide

other things you're supposed to do is keep an eye on him, look for signs that he's getting worse such as

- giving away personal belonging
- prolonged sleeping
- social withdrawal
- constant talk about death
- alcohol or drug abuse

as a friend you did the right thing to tell his parents but now you're supposed to shower him with attention and try to get him out and doing things he enjoys

There was this kid who told everyone he is "moveing" and everyone belived him but he told his best friend that he was going to kill himself but didnt want everyone at school to know so he killed himself and the next day his best friend comes and shes kinda crying and i talk to her and then she writes a letter about what really happen then killed herself

and u would NEVER expect those ppl to do it but they did and i was shocked and everyone at my school was...

fuck a depression tho im over that im just chillin now laid back like my old self imma kick it with my old homies and shit this weekend so its all good

I'd hate you if I was him/her. God nooo you did not do the right thing. If a friend of mine contemplated suicide and told me to keep my mouth shut I'd keep my mouth shut, tell him it's normal and leave him alone.
