word. i'm not into johnny cash's music alot personally, but that's just my taste...lyrics are very good. what's funny is how this one famous line seems so laconic and thew rest of the song is pretty emotional

Yeah, but I think that what he was going for. It's that line that sets up a more serious subject. Maybe it's his way of saying that we need to be careful of how something we take in a laid back way could destroy our life.... or maybe I'm looking waaaaaaaaaay to deep into it.

yeah, but it could be a possibility

Personally, I don't think Johnny was trying to convey or express anything... he was just talking about things he thought, nothing really that deep.  However, the lyrcis DO express a lot, and ARE deep, but that's only because they naturally came out of him, and how he felt.  So yeah, you can read a lot into them, which I don't believe Johnny intended, but that is there, as a result of his experiences and how he lived his life.  An even better (in my opinion) song he wrote, is "The Man In Black"... I'm sure most know he wore black all the time.

Well, you wonder why I always dress in black,
Why you never see bright colors on my back,
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone.
Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on.

I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down,
Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town,
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,
But is there because he's a victim of the times.

I wear the black for those who never read,
Or listened to the words that Jesus said,
About the road to happiness through love and charity,
Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me.

Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose,
In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes,
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back,
Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black.

I wear it for the sick and lonely old,
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold,
I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been,
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men.

And, I wear it for the thousands who have died,
Believen' that the Lord was on their side,
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died,
Believen' that we all were on their side.

Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.

Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day,
And tell the world that everything's OK,
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back,
'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black.

Genius.  No other words for it, Brilliant, Genius.

I always that the line meant that he shot hte guy because he was told not to play with guns and he was curious. You know how dumb kids do things just because they're told not and never told why not to? I could be wrong.

^^ i didn't interprate it that way, personally. finally, you cannot know

and Trauma those lyrics were good, but IMO Folsom Prison Blues is better...there's something to that writing that's just impressive, and it's in a way quite poetic

The best thing about this thread, unless someone cheated, is that Willie Nelson is recognizable simply because of his guitar strap.  You can't see his face or hair in the picture, but his guitar strap is instantly recognizable, even though it's on an electric guitar, which most people don't even realize he plays, since he always has his old trusty acoustic with him.
tell me more about this amazing strap, u got me interested.

Nothing really special, it's just Willie has an affection for inanimate objects, apparently, lol.  He's had that same guitar strap for as long as I can remember ever seeing him in any picture (the red, white, and blue one)..... if you look in the picture below this, you'll see it around his neck, even though there's also a strap on the guitar he's holding.  I guess the red/white/blue one isn't hooked to anything...... he's probably got it set up to snap onto his acoustic that he always has.  He has an acoustic guitar that he's been playing for decades, it has signatures from every major musician he's worked with on it, covered in them...... under the strings near the soundhole, is a hole in the guitar about 3 or 4 inches long, that his fingers have worn through the flat top just from years of playing!  I'll bet that guitar is worth about 3 million dollars just because of the significance of it being his favorite for all these years, and all of the signatures that are on the guitar, many of the people long dead.

Johnny Cash is legendary. Was one of few artists who could go from one end of the spectrum to the other and do it perfectly.
