O.K., so Brian Wilson recorded a track called "Fire" in 1966, to go on the 'elemental suite' of his SMiLE album.  He wanted to represent the great chicago fire, famously started by Ms. o'leary's cow.  Anyways, he brought fireman's helmets in for everyone to wear, and set a trash can on fire in the studio so everybody could smell the smoke while they were recording it. 

That night, a house burnt down near the studio, and the next day, Brian, paranoid from the drugs he was taking, thought it was his fault, and that the song had sent out 'bad vibes' and caused the fire.  So, he locked the tape up in a vault, and didn't relisten to it for years, and never released it.

In late 2003, he announced he was going to finish the SMiLE album, and began work on writing sheet music and link tracks, so that the album could be toured in early 2004.

The first day of practice, for the live version of the album, the band was rehearsing "Ms. O'Leary's Cow" (as FIRE was now referred to), and all the power went out in the building, lol.  Brian wasn't there yet, or he probably would have freaked the fuck out. 

Tuesday Morning, the Academy announced that "Ms. O'Leary's Cow" had been nominated for a grammy, for best instrumental..........

and Monday night, this happened in Chicago.

Chicago high-rise fire injures 37

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) -- A fire in a downtown high-rise building injured 37 people, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman said late Monday.

The fire in the LaSalle Bank building in Chicago's Loop started around 6:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. ET) on the building's 29th floor, authorities said. The blaze spread to the building's 30th floor before it was extinguished. Its cause remained unknown.
Twenty-two firefighters were among those injured, and four of them were in serious condition, Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said. Most injuries were the result of smoke inhalation, he said.

"There is heavy smoke throughout the building," Langford said as fire crews battled the flames. "We have no specific reports of people trapped, but we are doing a floor-by-floor search of the building."

Jim Rubens, who was working on the 36th floor, said fire crews reached his group and told them to exit down a stairwell in the smoke-filled building.

"All the floors are filled with smoke," Rubens told local reporters, his face and mustache smeared with soot. "The smoke was coming in from the vents."

He said he went down the stairwell with 12 people, with everyone trying to stay as low as possible covering their mouths: "At one point, it was almost impossible to breathe, and they just kept screaming, 'Keep going, keep going.' And everybody kept going."

He said some of his friends remained on the 35th floor.

The fire started on the 29th floor and spread horizontally across it. Video from the scene showed bright orange flames raging through at least 11 windows, which were blown out and belching smoke.

Bank employee Paul Sawyer said workers on the lower floors were told to leave about 10 minutes after the first alarms went off.

Tom Lia of the city's fire sprinkler advisory board told CNN affiliate WLS that the building was not outfitted with fire sprinklers. The building is equipped with a pump system to allow firefighters to get enough water to upper floors to fight fires, he said.

Dozens of police, fire and other emergency crews raced to the scene, cordoning off the streets around the building. Some emergency personnel checked rooms in the lower floors for people who might still be inside.

The 45-story art deco building was completed in 1934, and houses bank and law offices. It was built on the site of one of the world's first skyscrapers, the Home Insurance Building, which was destroyed so the LaSalle building could be built.

The fire comes a little more than a year after a blaze on the 12th floor of the Cook County administration building, which killed six people who had been trapped in a stairwell. (Full story)

An independent report found numerous problems contributed to the deaths, including a lack of automatic sprinklers and ineffective search-and-rescue operations by Chicago firefighters.

City officials put several measures in place after that fire, including setting up a rapid-ascent team to deal with high-rise blazes.

He does, man, an uncannily good heart.  I admire the struggles he's overcame, and the willingness he has to just LIVE, he doesn't want to die, I admire that.  I saw a live DVD of the Beach Boys live @ Knebworth in 1980 the other night, and Brian didn't sing but 1 line in 1 song, and sat there, 300 pounds, at the edge of the stage, looking like he wanted to die, playing piano all night.  For him to come from that to where he is today is just a testimony to the power of the human spirit,... seeing things like that happen in people's lives is the main reason I believe in God.   There has to be a God, no man is powerful enough to overcome what he's overcame.

Yes.  Crazy, heh?  I'm telling you, words can't describe how close this guy was to being gone, he was living in hell and came out of it, and has almost regained his former 'glory' of sorts.  He can almost sing as good, he can almost write as good, etc.  Really incredible. 

For another spin, Imagine right now, Dr. Dre started making Detox, everybody that heard it said it was incredible, the greatest rap album ever created... and then at the last minute, Dre cancelled the album... even though it was almost finished.  Instead, he put out some half-assed "Holding Tank" album, with two incredible songs that he says were originally on the Detox album, and the rest were so so... years go by, with Dre doing 1 track here and there for people, all incredible music, Dre baloons up to 300 pounds and starts staying in bed for months at a time, gets a divorce, is horribly addicted to drugs and alcohol, can't rap because his voice sounds horrible, goes insane and plays a copy of Quincy Jones' "Walking In Space" over and over and over and over again in his house... frequently tells people that he burned the Detox masters, it was crappy drug-influenced music, poses for the cover of Rolling Stone wearing nothing but Speedos...

and then you hear rumours Dre's quit the drugs, he's remarried, he's back in the studio... he announces that after nearly 40 years, he's going to release the finished version of Detox, and when he does, he sounds nearly as good as he did 40 years ago? It's really pretty incredible.  GO DRE!!!!
