S U B L I M E

Trauma's post motivated me to make another topic about a non-hiphop band i love. So does anybody on this board listen to Sublime? Their style is (was) pretty much a mix of rock, reggae, punk and ska with influences reaching from folk to hiphop (they had Too $hort, Q-Ball and KRS-ONe on their albums too) and yet it's unique. Bradley Nowell (the guy in the pic below and in my sig now) was an extremly gifted musician, the lead vocalist (a very good one), guitarist (a great one) and he also played percussion, bass and congas and handled the samplers. Since he died of heroin in 97, the band is no more and they got only 3 albums (plus some posthumous releases of old material)

the ones i got are "40 Oz.To Freedom" (debut) and the 3rd and last, self-titled one...both are pretty damn great...for example "Sublime" starts with a reggae song that ends with a melody that sounds like one of DJ Quik's better beats, the 2nd is smooth west coast folk rock, 3rd is ska, 4th is ska-punk, etc. and yet it all goes together very well and always sounds alot like Sublime to me

just thought i'd put up a non-hiphop topic...so anybody into them??

I've heard a few songs, they were tight. Didn't know they worked with KRS or Short.

shouldn't have mentioned that, now it's all gonna be abouth the 3% hiphop in their music lol. naw, they did, Too $hort rapped on an interlude on "Robbin The Hood", KRS did some background vocals on "Get Ready" on their third album

Yeah man, they're one of my favourite bands next to Rage Against the Machine.

All their albums are pretty classic, my favourite songs are :

I have Robbin The Hood but I don't really like it. I've heard some of their other stuff and it's alright though.

Most hip-hop is now keyboard driven, because the majority of hip-hop workstations have loops and patches that enable somebody with marginal skills to put tracks together,...

Unfortunately, most hip-hop artists gravitated towards the path of least resistance by relying on these pre-set patches. As a result, electric guitar and real musicians became devalued, and a lot of hip-hop now sounds the same.

how did that one dude in sublime die again... i remeber my buddy tellin me but i forgot now... but yea sublime is dope they were into hardcore drugs tho which sorta fucked em up :'(
