New Scratch Magazine Article with Daz
« on: January 31, 2005, 03:26:19 PM »
From Scratch Magazine - March\April 2005
Interview with Matt Barone

Back in 1993, the bass-heavy sounds of Snoop Doggy Dogg's seminal album Doggystyle helped relocate rap's chart domination from New York to California, layered with genre-bending instrumentals courtesy of Dr. Dre and Dat Nigga Daz. With the album's brand of gangsta music, non-existant in today's climate of Southern crunk and soul sampling, Daz is ready to reintroduce the word to the style that he helped define over a decade ago. Prepping two independently distributed offerings, as well as his So So Def Records debut, So So Gangsta, the Dogg Pound founder promises a return to his beloved G-funk era. With that in mind, Daz reveals his diverse list of producers worthy enough to remix Doggystyle for 2005.

G Funk Intro

Daz: Timbaland. He could flip it and put some of those bugged-out sound effects on it, and freak it on some real other shit.

Gin And Juice

Daz: Jermaine Dupri. JD could take it to the clubs, and make it knock more. He'd give it that light bounce that it would need to hurt the clubs right now.

Tha Shiznit

Daz: P. Diddy. That beat is faster than what Diddy normally does, but he could freak it and keep that "W Balls!" It's only a drum track, so I know Diddy could turn it into something big.

Lodi Dodi

Daz: Doug E. Fresh is perfect for that one. He could keep it real old school with his beatbox, or he could add some 808 and give it some real bass.

Murder Was The Case

Daz: I'd have to freak that one and make it harder with a whole new beat and add some more bass, 'cause muthafuckas today love bass.

Serial Killa

Daz: Fred Wreck could make that sound like modern Dr. Dre, with all of those clear quality sounds and keyboards.

Who Am I? ( What's My Name )

Daz: I can see Soopafly adding some good George Clinton samples on top of it, and making it funkier than it originally was.

For All My Niggaz & Bitches

Daz: Me. I'd have to freak that one, too, 'cause I originally produced it. I'd make it more hard-core without Kurupt on it, though. Put Soopafly on there instead of Kurupt, with a harder beat, and you'd be good.

Ain't No Fun

Daz: I would do that one also, 'cause Dr. Dre actually stole it from my drum machine. So, I'd have to take it back and add some deeper bass.

Doggy Dogg World

Daz: Warren Campbell is a producer that used to be on Death Row back in the day. He would switch it up with the Dramatics, and probably put on old school beat on it to match their singing perfectly.

Gz And Hustlas

Daz: Just Blaze would throw on one of his samples and make it bang. He'd give it an East Coast feel and tweak it out to give it a whole new sound.

Pump Pump

Daz: It's all about ideas when you're in the studio, and DJ Premier always brings crazy ideas with him. He'd add some scratches on there, you know, like "Pump, pump, p-p-p-pump."

it would be tight if daz hooked up with premier for a couple tracks on his east coast cd.I'm sure he appreciates his shit since he used the same sample on 'c walkin chachacha that premier used on beyond comprehension

No problem about posting this up, once I peeped the article, I knew ya'll had to read it, as some of it is ridiculous. Daz really seemed to forget that Doggystyle is a WESTCOAST classic, hence all the East Coast producers he selected. Then again, he was a part of the album itself, so I won't hold much against him. This is my personal choice of producers for Doggystyle 2005 =

01. G Funk Intro - DJ Quik, with some live instruments, Quik would drop something tight to kick things off.

02. Gin And Juice - Warren G, no doubt. He'd lace it with the proper bass and he knows the G-Funk style very well

03. Tha Shiznit - Timbaland. He'd do something sick with the flute parts.

04. Lodi Dodi - Battlecat

05. Murder Was The Case - This would need something grimy, but melodic...so I'm going with Tone Capone

06. Serial Killa - This one's tough, since it needs a dark sound...Red Spyda's laced some impressive beats, so I'll pick him

07. What's My Name - Considering this is the best of P-Funk samples, I'd have Dr. Dre remix an updated version

08. For All My Niggaz & Bitches - Kanye West, cuz he knows how to utilize light keys, and his drums would sound tight for this cut

09. Ain't No Fun - I'm going with Warren G on this one, this song is right up his alley, production wise

10. Doggy Dogg World - Fredwreck would put together a nice, laid back beat for this

11. Gz & Hustlas - Hmm...I'll go with The Neptunes, provided they give Snoop something fresh and musical

12. Pump Pump - I agree with Daz, I think DJ Premier would kill it

13. Gz Up Hoes Down - I'd trust Quik to mix up a smooth backdrop for this one, with strings, horns, all that stuff.

^^ if you thought about it for a second you'd realize the magazine probably asked him to say that, I'm sure Daz didn't call the magazine with that idea.
