Is it cool to hate Hip Hop now?
« on: February 08, 2005, 01:25:25 PM »
seems like nowadays, everyone is saying that rap music sucks, and it isn't what it used to be.  And it not just the fans saying it, it's the rappers too.  So am I missing something?  is it cool to be a hip hop head, but hate rap music at the same time?  is complaining cool now?

Personally I cant stand when people do this.  Whether it be an artist or a fan.  If you don't like something, just keep it out of your mouth.  How often do I talk about Garth Brooks?  never.  I don't like him so I ignore him.  See how easy it is?

So basically what I want to say is.  I love rap music.  I love it for where it's been, where it is, and where it's going.  I don't hate it for what it isn't.

People that have listen to rap back in the day, will call for rap to sound like it did. People that listened to rap in the 1980's stopped listening to it backin the 90's. People that listen to rap now will stop listening to it in 10 years. Rap music's sound always changes, it's the nature of rap, which basically always changes it's sound to sound fresher, newer. Does rap suck, well compared to the later 80's/ early 90's, yeah, because there were a surplus of classics, and the common rule was, no biting allowed. Compared to anyother time, the early 80's, late 90's, early 2000's, no not really. Hell, Kanye West released a classic album last year. It's not often we get a classic album since the death of 2Pac and Biggie. Many artist like Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, they have listeners now that follow them, the westcoast is coming back with Game, and Xzibit has Pimp My Ride and seems to be releasing singles on his own terms not a record lable terms. Rap music is at a stalemate, has been since that night Biggie died. You can hate hip-hop all you want. Once you truly love it, you can never hate it. So those that hate hip-hop, they never loved it to begin with.

People act like just because it isnt what it used to be it sucks. It's like you hate on Scrubs because it isnt no X-Files. Both series are good, but different.

^Exactly what I do.

But you also have to see that the Westcoast has a very weird mentality. Nobody likes to see someone having success there. Game comes up, people like Grundy and SGV randomly hate on him just for the hell of it. They like the album, but won't face it so they just don't listen to it lol. Yuk, X, Ras etc are beefin with Game and shit.. And at the end of the day everybody is complaining  that the West is dying. How cynical.

You wanna know what my theory about all this is?

People just like to complain. Hell ya shit is different compared to how it was 10 years ago GET OVER IT. Time changes. Time will always change. Cry me a fucking river, but shut the fuck up. I can see people in 2017 complain that there aint no music like 50 Cent no more and how dope these days were.

Yeah, and it's ironic cause the rappers that say this usually produce the same kind of "sameness".  A lot of them say they don't like anything that's  on the radio, but yet they work with these same artists ::)

This thread reminded me of that Chris Rock HBO special show 'never scared'.. he says..

I love rap music but I’m tired of defending it...I love rappers today but it’s hard to defend this shit..

It’s hard to defend "I’ve got hoes in different area codes"

Love rap music, tired of defending it

The number one reason people hate on America is because of our religion. Americans worship money. Separate god from school, separate god from work, separate god from government... But on your money it says, in god we trust, all my life I've been looking for god, and he's right in my pocket!

cause i need that in audio...

So basically what I want to say is.  I love rap music.  I love it for where it's been, where it is, and where it's going.  I don't hate it for what it isn't.

I think to answer your question in a word, yes. The reason why I say this is simply because everyone from Nas to Jadakiss to Jay Z to Dr. Dre to Dj Quik to Mack 10 to Ice Cube to Snoop Dogg to Q Tip etc... have ALL at one point in recent years made the SAME point/statement. Why is this? Well alot of people feel like the music REALLY died in 1997, we ALL know what happened that year.

But why are RAPPERS and MC's making these statements? I think because although they are the one's making the music they feel powerless to stop the commercialized Bull that much of Hip Hop has become. In life imitation is flattery but in Rap Music it SHOULD BE blasphemy. After 2Pac everybody has something to say about thuggin'. How many songs have you heard that have just thuggin in the title? When Pac said it, it was controversial and poignent in certain cases but now brotha's just throw in the word thug in order for the verse to rhyme.

Another thing is this, many of the Rappers that are from NY are rapping West Coast. Pac called alot of them on this just before he died. And it just so happens that many of these rappers dominated the airwaves since his departure. Pac stood for something, how many rappers that you know of lyrically stand for something. I can name many; but one thing that all these people that I am thinking of have in common in one thing:little to no airplay. The whole industry structure as we know it right now is Fugazi!

So what do i listen to? Select known people mixed with mostly Underground cats that are trying to get attention: Balance, Sann Quinn, Crooked I, Damani, and the stuff from the old.

West / East makes no difference. Too much commercialism on the TV and the radio. I miss the days of NWA, Ice Cube(Death Certificate/Amercia's Most/Kill At Will), Too Short(In Oaktown), Ice T, Richie Rich, King T, Easy E, Dj QUIk, 2nd II None, AMG, KAM, Def Jeff, Public Enemy etc...

One last thing, Gangsta rap hasn't always been the commercial bulls..t joke that it now is. It used to have a point, a message. Go listen to Ice T's O.G.(Original Gangsta) album. Matter of fact listen to all of his old CD's...there was a point. Anyone remember Ice Cube's Death Certifiacate, that s..t was soo tight that my Pops would listen to it.

Any way those are my thoughts...

True and sad.We love oldschool cause we started with it, we hate the new rappers but we NOT hate CHANGES,i personally hate any rapper who is rappin "by the book" with the same old line....the same lyrics said in other context.
From one artist to another in ANY genre of music I want to learn something, to hear real lyrics, i don't wanna hear that u already brought a new Bentley or that u fuck 3 hoe's at the same time.Although i hear this kind of songs but i like to listen.

"How we do" imao is a wack song but i listen to it for that dope beat...i don't like the lyrics in it and that "Uhhh Uhhh" but i gotta admit that the song sounds real good.So there's place for new changes, for evolution in rap music not stagnation or rappin around the finger.

shut the fuck up you dumb peice of shit.  don't fuckin assume things about me.  I don't hate the game, nor have I ever said I did.  I think he is a boring rapper, as avg as you can get.  and how the fuck do you know if I like his album and don't listen to it?  I gave it a listen, it was ok, nothing impressed me.  I rarely ever get impressed with a album anymore, and most new albums don't hardly get more than 2 listens out of me.  I have a shitload of rap music.  I have listened to rap for over 10 years.  I have over 800 westcoast rap albums, I listen to a lot more rappers than you.  Just cuz you and half this forum wanna suck game's dick, doesn't mean I have to want to also.

Now as for this topic:

I luv WESTCOAST rap.  Always will.  I will never get tired of many many albums that I own.  I can listen to many songs 20 times in a row and not be bored.  As for new rap, its very boring to me.  nothing impresses me.  almost every album turns out as a dissapointment.  Almost every old rapper has fallen off and then there is the ones who fell off and sold out.  There hasn't been an album in years with any replay value.  Sure there are some bangers on the albums, but for the most part a majority of the songs are not that great.

As for hating rap, yes I hate A LOT OF IT nowadays.  I can't stand the shit on the radio or mtv.  I can't stand 90% of these rappers emerging from the south.  I fuckin despise rappers like lil jon, nelly, bone crusher, yin yan twinz, ja rule and plenty more wackass rappers who I don't even have a clue who they are.  I'd probably say that I hate 90% of rap nowadays.  In fact rap is my most luved and hated genre of music.  If something really big doesn't happen in the next 2 years I could probably see myself not even checking out any new rap anymore.  I'll probably just stick to my old stuff, and start getting more into the stuff that has been sampled and all the old 70's funk.  And to say that if you hate rap now, then you never luved it, is one of the dumbest most bullshit statements ever.  I luv westcoast rap probably more than 99% of this forum, but I also hate new rap more than at least 75% of this forum.
