A school, like almost any other institution has rules established and enforced by authority. Patterns in obedience to authority are mainly universal – whether you’re talking about the Stanford Prison Experiment, the Milgram Experiment, or obedience in schools, people generally follow what they’re told for a number of reasons. Why does an average person follow all rules, regardless of their own position towards them? It is primarily because of selfish motivations for one’s safety and own well-being, and secondly because members of a society try to avoid creating disorder to maintain stability within that society. Psychologists Stanley Milgram and Philip Zimbardo explored these issues in their controversial experiments. The results and analyses of their work come back to the subject of power and obedience, and prove that in any situation in which a person is under an authority, he is likely to follow orders.
