The JailHouse Interview

“On February 21, 2000, Mac McKinley Phipps, better known as former No Limit rapper ‘Mac’ played host to his weekly concert promotion at a urban nightspot that featured himself as well as a roster of his peers from his then record label No Limit Records. While signing autographs for three patrons who are now cooperating witnesses, Mac was distracted by gunfire, which ultimately resulted in the murder of a young man.

Mac, armed with a legally registered weapon, which was never fired, rushed to protect his mother and manager Sheila Phipps. As the nights events began to unfold. Mac, who was questioned by authorities, lost credibility by denying possession of a gun. After further questioning, he was arrested and charged with the murder. Friends, patrons and family members were able to retain a slew of corroborating witnesses who swore to Mac’s innocence. They even identified the gunman as Thomas Warren, who is related to Mac through biological children Warren shares with Mac’s aunt. After deliberation and religious counsel, Warren, escorted by Pastor Jerry Price identified himself to authorities as the murderer in both a taped and televised confession. Warren was released after confessing, but shortly afterwards fled to northern Louisiana where he now resides.

In the meantime, Mac is currently behind bars at the Winn Correctional Facility serving a 30-year manslaughter charge. Up until this tragedy, Mac had never had so much as a traffic ticket. The man who penned such hits as “Wobble Wobble” and “He Did That” for No Limit artist and CEO Master P, now he sits in a cell waiting for the day that justice will prevail.

In a jailhouse interview, courtesy of Divadend Entertainment, I got the opportunity to speak with Mac and discuss hit current state of mind, the night in question and the support of No Limit during his current situation.

Valerie: What happened on the night of February 21, 2000?

Mac: I was hosting a party that my mother had given. I was signing autographs and taking pictures—all of a sudden an altercation breaks out and I hear shots. I pull out my weapon and go back to where my mother is to make sure she is all right.

Valerie: Do you typically carry a gun?

Mac: In certain conditions.

Valerie: Then what happened?

Mac: I was questioned by the police and initially I did deny having the gun, next thing I know I am being arrested and charged with murder?

Valerie: Why did you wait until now to speak out?

Mac: Under the guidance of my lawyer I was told not to bring to much attention to the situation. I think (the attorney) thought it would be better to keep things low key. Looking back on it now, I probably should have brought attention to it when it happened.

Valerie: Did they do ballistics on the gun?

Mac: Yes and the bullets did not match the ones from the scene.

Valerie: What about the guy that stepped forward?

Mac: The police let him go, I think they believed we were paying him to take the fall, but, you know, ain’t no amount of money worth taking another man’s life, because basically I am looking at spending my life in here.

Valerie: Did you know the victim?

Mac: No, and I would like to send my condolences to his family. The first time I saw the victim was in a picture at my trial. I wanted to see the victim.

Valerie: Have any of your No Limit family come to visit, any celebrities?

Mac: They came in the beginning, but it’s like with anything—once time passed it got old. Not only that people have things they have to deal with as well.

Valerie: How do you maintain? Do you write?

Mac: You have to be inspired to write—not only that no one wants to hear a bunch of songs about being locked up. In regards to maintaining, my wife, my mother and my family have been my biggest support. My family has been supportive from the beginning.

Valerie: Are you still up on what’s going on in hip hop? Do you still want to be involved in the hip hop industry as far as writing is concerned?

Mac: I am still a hip hop fan. As far as writing goes, I’ll never turn down an opportunity for a check (laughing).

Valerie: What is the current legal status in regards to your case?

Mac: We are waiting for a tentative date from the 1st circuit court—the court of appeals. It could take anywhere from six to twelve months before I get a date.

Valerie: Is there anything you would like to say to your fans, or even to people who are just now becoming familiar with you and your story?

Mac: Don’t carry guns, make decisions on your own and enjoy life and don’t take anything for granted.

hell yeah and peeps to need to check this shit out. a lot of peeps is talkin bout Free Shyne,Free Yayo(when he was locked up),Free B.G. Knocc Out etc but the funny thing is that they all guilty but here we have a guy that´s innocent and no one´s runnin around talkin bout Free Mac even tho he´s more talented then the artists i mentioned.
