2001: Most slept on year in West Coast rap history?
« on: April 11, 2005, 07:03:12 AM »
This past weekend, I was playin some of my favorite albums from 2001. It seems as if Dre 2001 may not have been named because of a west coast revival that would take place in 01, but it seemed as if it only fit. The end of 2000 brought Da Last Meal and Restless, which were both 4.5/5 albums to me, and 2001 had many albums that I anticipated that actually came out. I remember that 2001 summer, playin NOTHIN BUT west coast albums...Eastsidaz Duces N Trays, Soopafly (old material but still good) Dat whoopty whoop, DPG Dillinger N Young Gotti, Tha Liks X.O. Experience, Kurupt Space Boogie, DPG 2002 that had old tracks that were still bomb, Doggys angels which dropped 00 and wasn't good lyrically but had GREAT beats, I think Pac until te end of time was out then, and my favorite album for the year, Bad Azz Personal Business. It was probably a few more that dropped that I didn't mention, and I was only mentionin Southern Cal albums because that's all I really heard about at that time.

When these albums were scheduled to drop, I was like damn....the west coast is FINALLY comin back, but it seems as if nobody really paid us much attention, including ourselves. I think this year made it clear that the west coast sound was not what people seemed to want anymore. These albums all had some of the best post G-Funk era west coast production that I've heard aside from Chronic 01 itself. But due to the radio stations not promotin, or whatever else that was goin on, the west was still slept on.

So when I hear people say the west is back now...I think we were definitely doin much more overall in 2001. Game's album had more impact than any of these albums as far as sales, but as far as true 100% west coast sound went, this year DEFINITELY brought the most that I'd heard since 1996. I am also wonderin...if the west coast does "come back" this year or next, do you think the west coast sound itself will be back, or just west coast artists and names in the industry but not havin that distinct west coast feel that most of us seem to love?

Yeah, that's what I was trynna say when people argued that Game was bringin the West back... why should I care if the west is back or not if it ain't got that westcoast sound? It's all about the music!!

I agree with everything you said. 01 was a nice year.

Yeah I remember, I was just speakin about Dre namin it 2001 because it was originally named Chronic 2000, but since he named it 2001, it seemed fitting if the west coast was to come back.
