Got into the Jazz Cafe bout eightish, had a couple of pints and got a good position a couple of people back from the front. Was expecting there to be some kind of support act, but it was just a DJ until Com came on about half nine with DJ Dummy, and Omar someone who played keys.
Can't even remember what he opened with, but everyone was really hyped when he came out, and he was putting mad energy into it. At the end of the first song he set the stage for the night by declaring the concert our basement party, and made a joke with a guy in the front who put his empty beer glass on the stage ("stop fucking with my moms basement man"). He then went on to do a gang of sucessive dope tracks mainly culled from "Like Water For Chocolate" and his new album, such as "Thelonious, "As Long As Its Funky","Go", and a couple of his guest verses from other tracks such as his verses from"Respiration" and "Love of My Life". Everyone was loving his set, and it was probably the best show I've been too as far as overall atmosphere amongst the crowd. Common brought a very fine girl from the crowd out onto the stage and proceeded to slow dance with her through a grip of old school soul classics, before doing "Come Close" with her on stage. He gave DJ Dummy some time to shine, and then went through some rap classics including "Passin Me By" and "Sucker MCs". He then joked with another guy in the front who kept shouting out 6th Sense throughout the concert, likening him to that one guy at every party who has to keep going up to the DJ and requesting songs, before going into "6th Sense", which was as dope as expected, "Corners", which he jumped into the crowd for the first verse of, and then "I Used To Love H.E.R" with the second verse being done over the beat to "TROY". He did a couple of new tracks, and then played the piano for a while, before requesting for the lights to be switched on, after the lights man failed to do what he wanted he said "yo, DJ Dummy gimme the light", as went into "The Light" which was getting the crowd moving, and singing along to the hook. He then left the stage to mass applause, before returning with a new track, followed by "Resurrection" which was an obvious highlight, before leaving the stage for good to yet more mass applause.
Overall, it was an extremely dope concert, Common was in full flow, and enjoying the crowd reaction. He had a good banter with the crowd throughout the performance which I think definitely contributed to the overall dopeness of the gig. The songs he played from his new album sounded amazing, and apart from a couple of Resurrection tracks and "Dooinit", he played pretty much all of the tracks I wanted to here. I suggest if you ever get the chance to see him live you check it out because you definitely won't be disappointed.

yup. common is one of the most solid performers i know. hella energy and great music. i saw him back when he was on tour promoting electric cirucs, and that shit was hot.. he came out reciting classic ass verses from Illmatic, Enta Da Stage, and a bunch more, it was so dope. and he was also breakdancing and everything. i cant wait to see him perform again.
