I don't even know if I consider it a tragedy, the guy did it to himself and never learned.  I guess it's a tragedy that his music's gone, but it's not much of a surprise that he is.

James Hetfield (Metallica),
Serj Tankian (SOAD),
Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin)
Chris Cornell (Audioslave, Soundgarden), although i'm not the biggest fan of soundgarden

Prince.......listen to him talk then listen to a song like "kiss"and it's like how'd that man sing that song or the intro to "get off"  :o then when he mixes his range up and it sounds like 40 different guys singing, when it's really just him layering his different voice ranges......amazing

Steven Tyler has always been a great favorite of mine, like Ritchie Sombora said "there's never been a better front man, ever" and i'd agree with him

Chris Cornell, he's a once in a lifetime talent, like Henry Rollins said " you could watch him peel the paint off the wall" and tom morello once said during recording sessions he'd be outside the sound booth door and see the door shaking when chris would go into a deep vibrato  :o

bruce Dickinson is DEFINATELY a great vocalist , to me his voice is like Mountain Lions roar high and sharp but has good gut growl

I don't even know if she counts as a rock vocalist but, Mariah Carey is for sure the greatest voice that ever laid vocals down that range can not be out done

please don't ANYONE get me wrong here.........i'm the biggest metallica fan i know

but what's up with everyone putting james hetfield on their lists.........he's a great front man and has a good growl, and is probably metal's greatest rhythm guitar players but as a singer he's not "all that"

I think it`s just that it fits their music perfectly...but I gotta admit on "Kill 'Em All" his pre-pubescent wails weren`t all that great...

^yeah, every album it seemed like james grew a new pubic hair on his sack or somthin

kill em all his vocals were high, but he tried to growl
ride the lightning he had a lil bit of a growl but he'd hit some high notes
master of puppets he had the growl down
...and justic for all perfected the growl
black album perfected the growl a lil more then started adding more melody, and exagerted everything by ending all of his words with a -AH! "oooooooooooo-AH!" "take my haaaaaaaaaaand-AH!" "we're off to never never laaaaaaaaaaaaand-AH!"

FREDDY MERCURY (QUEEN)...GOAT singer IMO, and I´m not a huge Queen fan

Thom Yorke (Radiohead)
Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)
Anthony Kiedis (RHCP)
John Frusciante, since he´s been able to sing
Stipe (REM)
Liam Gallagher (Oasis)
Layne Staley (Alice In Chains)
Bradley Nowell (Sublime)
Syd Barret (Pink Floyd before he turned mad...I like him a lot more than Waters, personally)
Bob Dylan (matter of taste, but his voice fits the songs perfectly...if you wanna call him "rock")
Bruce Springsteen
Chris Martin (Coldplay)
Lou Reed (Velvet Underground/solo)
Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin)
Joey Cape (Lagwagon, verrry good singer for a punk band)

those are some I like...don´t like Hetfield´s singing at all
