History Tells Us: USC will lose at South Bend.
« on: October 09, 2005, 05:56:59 PM »
Start the circus music and bring in the elephants. It'll be that type of atmosphere this week in South Bend -- minus the clowning around, of course.

The USC Trojans, owners of a 27-game winning streak and considered by some to be the greatest show on earth, will make their appearance at Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday. When analyzing this game, there are two important things to keep in mind. (1) USC has beaten the Irish by exactly 31 points in each of the last three seasons. (2) Some of the greatest streaks in college football history -- and all of college sports for that matter -- have ended at the hands of Notre Dame.

In 1957, the Irish went into Norman, Okla., and came out with a 7-0 victory, snapping the NCAA-record 47-game winning streak of Bud Wilkinson's Sooners. And although that streak is unparalleled in college football annals, it might not even be the greatest streak broken by Notre Dame in its school history. Try these on for size.

• The longest winning streak of all-time in men's basketball -- 88 games by UCLA -- was ended by Notre Dame in 1974.

• The longest winning streak of all-time in women's soccer -- 92 games by North Carolina -- was ended by a scoreless tie with Notre Dame in 1994.

The Irish also ended Texas' 30-game football winning streak in 1971, Florida State's 25-game baseball winning streak in 2002 and UConn's 55-game home winning streak in women's basketball in 2005.

Perhaps it's only fitting that the road to an unprecedented third straight football national title must go through South Bend. History and Notre Dame have always had a way of converging.

this might be just the kind of game needed to wake up USC. theyve been kind of sluggish until the second half. I see them beatin Notre Dame tho for sure. i dont think theyll take em lightly....and should start fast this week.

yeah, everyone is just makin a big deal of it. Rivalry game, Notre Damn havin two weeks to prepare. Should be a crazy game though, USC needs to get out to a fast start and get the crowd out of it. If they struggle early like they have, it might be a tough game...but i still see the Trojans gettin past em. Im lookin forward to a USC vs Texas championship game.

they're ranked 9th, in both polls. Shows how much you know about college football huh  ;D? (higher than UCLA)

UCLA does look scary, but Charlie Weis should scare the shit out of USC. I mean, two weeks to make up a game plan vs USC? This man has won superbowls, i'd be scared!

I would'nt be at all surprised if Penn State or Notre Dame are in the championship game come the end of this season.

Texas and USC will NOT, i REPEAT, will not play each other in the finals. My prediction anywayz.

UCLA should have won last year except that the refs ruled 2 fumbles down by contact when they were both fumbles. The first one Spencer Havener had an easy touchdown but instead USC got a field goal out of it. Plus UCLA has the best punt returner in the nation, Maurice Drew, and the best tight end as well as one of the best offensive line's in terms of pass protection.

Oklahoma & Cal(still ranked) were ranked at the time UCLA defeated them. So they've defeated 2 ranked opponents.

i dont know if itll be USC/Texas....but i like that matchup.
