Laura Ingraham, Biggest Jump in Search Activity; Mancow, Biggest Drop Kim Komando, David Lee Roth Make First-Ever Appearances on List; Al Franken Falls


WALTHAM, Mass., Nov. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Lycos, Inc. (http://www.lycos.com), a media destination for creators and consumers of quality content, today announced its fifth annual list of the most popular talk radio personalities with Web users based on The Lycos 50(TM) (http://50.lycos.com). The Lycos 50 is a weekly list of the most popular people, places and things web users search for everyday.

Howard Stern continues his reign as "King of all Media" online for the fifth consecutive year, generating eight times more search activity than any other talk radio personality or team of radio hosts. Searches for Sirius Satellite Radio are also up 1,300 percent due to Stern's scheduled exit from traditional radio at the end of this year. Of total Stern search activity, 50 percent of online interest specifies Sirius Satellite.

"Based on the fact that half of Stern's searches specify Sirius, it's easy to predict that half of Stern's present terrestrial radio audience will follow him to satellite," said Dean Tsouvalas, writer of The Lycos 50. "Over the past year, Stern's popularity with web users has tripled, and if web search activity is any indication, David Lee Roth will pull in bigger audience numbers than Adam Corolla once Stern departs. But right now, Stern is 63 times more popular online than Roth, and Corolla's search activity doesn't even register a blip on the radar with web users."

Another big winner with web users this year is Laura Ingraham, seeing a 2,050 percent rise in search activity, up from number 28 last year. Kim Komando makes her first-ever appearance on this year's list, with a 500 percent bump in online interest.

While Sean Hannity experienced the biggest gain in online popularity last year, he slips 44 percent this year, falling from number five to number 11. But Mancow is the biggest loser this year, with a 109 percent drop in search interest, falling from number nine to number 19 in search activity.

Of the three newcomers to last year's list, only Tom Leykis remains, as Al Franken and Lionel drop off the list completely. Search activity for Franken dropped 95 percent over the past year.

Well, I've found my latest thing I'm going to rant about. 

I cannot stand reports like this.  It's rediculous, they're taking a science, "statistics" in particular, a very mathematical thing, and then throwing all rules out the window and reporting bullshit.

You can't just post raw numbers and then infer the things they're inferring from it.  Now, no doubt, Howard Stern is the most popular, internet searched name on Lycos.  They have raw numbers to support that, but the other things they get just aren't really logical.  For instance, they say that Sirius sattellite searches have gone up 13,000 percent, and then say, carte blance, that it's due to Stern's exit from terrestrial radio this year.  Well, I'm sure his exit is causing a lot of fanfare, and I'm sure many of those searches for Sirius are solely because of Stern, but he's not the only reason more people are searching for Sirius.  To say that he is, like they just did, is very, very bad journalism.  It's also horrible statistical work, there's no evidence at all to support that all 13,000 percent of those extra searches are because of Stern.

Then they make the absolutely ludicrious jump in logic when it comes to the next part, and say that 50 percent of the searches for Stern, included the word Sirius.  O.K., but then they say that this means 50 percent of his audience will follow him to Sirius.  How does it mean that at all?  All it means concretely, is that 50 percent of his audience that searches for him on the internet knows about Sirius.  It doesn't mean that they're all going to sign up; it doesn't mean that all of his audience searches online for his name, etc.  Any casual listeners of his show won't be inclined at all to buy Sirius sattelite service and pay money a month to hear something they casually listened to before.  Many of his listeners may not search for him online, either.  People that are inclined to search for him online may be correlated with people that are inclined to be interested in Sirius sattelite radio, and people that aren't inclined to search for him online (I.E., aren't extremely tech savvy and steer clear of computers) may be the very people that don't want to buy Sirius, for the same reasons, and may be totally excluded from the 'statistics' they're posting above.  They can't make the jump in logic they did above with any kind of mathematical certainty, it's just bullshit numbers that means nothing, unless you're building a webpage, which they're not.

Then they talk about David Lee Roth, and Adam Corolla.  Adam is famous, but David Lee Roth was 50 times more famous when he was in Van Halen years ago, many of the searches for his name are probably (almost certainly!) from fans interested in his music, not his talk show.  Even if people searching for Adam may be interesed in his television show, it's likely much less popular than fucking Van Halen was (and still is to some people) so it's unfair to say that Roth gets more attention than Corolla, and that people will listen to Roth more.  It's totally unrelated and bad stastical analysis.... again.

All this shows is that Howard Stern, for whatever reason, gets 8 times more searches on lycos.com than the next runner up, Rush Limbaugh.  Add in the knowledge that Rush Limbaugh mentions his web address dozens of times a day on his radio show "RushLimbaugh.com", and you have to assume that it's likely the people searching for his name on Lycos.com likely aren't even fans of the show, or else they'd just go to his webpage they surely would have heard about 10,000 times by now.  On top of that, Limbaugh consistantly has many, many more listeners than Stern, which leads me to believe their statistics are pretty much bullshit, something's fucked up somewhere. 

I just think it's sloppy analysis, personally.

Oh please.  Do you know anything about what you're talking about?  YEARS ago, the most stations Howard Stern EVER HAD was 67.  He's on 45 now.  So lets take his peak of 67 stations, that's a lot of fucking listeners.  Rush Limbaugh's sitting at 6 fucking hundred.  So Howard's got 67 stations, Rush has 600 stations, I think it's a safe bet Rush is trashing him in overall listeners.  Howard Stern has an estimated weekly audience of 8.7 million listeners, Rush Limbaugh has an estimated weekly audience of more than 20 million.

A listener called in and played a tape of Rush Limbaugh referring to New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, who is African American, as “Ray Nager.” Even though Rush acted like it was an honest mistake, Howard thought he was attempting to make a joke. He added that since there are so many conservative radio personalities out there, each one has to find ways to seem more right-winged than the next. Given this, Howard figured Rush, while technically not doing anything wrong, was actually speaking in code to his listeners. Robin noted that the newest trend in being conservative seems to be to lash out against minorities.

Howard related to this practice of “one-up-manship” in the radio world, because throughout his career other disc jockeys have ripped off his ideas and taken them to extremes. He talked about a couple of shock jocks who he recently heard were allowing undiscovered bands to play on their shows as long as the band members brought in women who agreed to get naked. Of course, Howard has been doing this for years, yet he rarely ever receives credit for his innovations.
