Yeah, Ren is just short for "Lorenzo", his first name.  Apparently, that's what he'd been called since high school, so he just added "MC" to the end.

MC Ren is such an old-skool name, IMO.  Kinda funny that almost all of the West Coast rappers use their gang aliases (even Tone Loc, back before G-shit was even the defining style of Cali) or the most hardcore-sounding names they could come up with, yet Ren has such a generic-sounding name that he's kept to this day.  Then again, contrary to rumors I've heard, Ren did NOT bang KPCC like Eazy did, so it figures he wouldn't have a gang name to use.

According to IMDB (take it for what you will), Ren was born June 14, 1969 and Cube was born June 15, 1969, which is odd because it makes Cube the youngest by only 1 day.  I remember for a long time back when N.W.A. first came out, there were rumors that Ren was only 15 (born in 1973) and Cube was 18 (born 1970), but most of what I've heard suggests both were born 1969.

And I'm sure you're right about the gang thing.  Ren has always struck me as being just as straight as Cube and Dre.  Also, KPCCs' have the letters tattooed on the undersides of their forearms ('KP' on the right, 'CC' on the left); I've seen those tattoos on both Eazy and Lil Eazy, but I've never seen them on Ren.
