Sirius Radio - a MUST for hip-hop heads
« on: December 21, 2005, 08:53:30 PM »
Hopefully this in the right forum - totally music related.

Anyway, i have Dish Network and as a part of my package i get Sirius Radio.  To me, it's really almost too good to be true.  I am beyond fed up with radio these days, i can't listen to any of it really.  Sirius has virtually every genre covered.  But anyway, there are 2 hip-hop stations that i check for daily and one that i'm addicted to.  My least favorite is Shade 45, because they play a lot of G-Unit and they talk a lot on that channel.  They still play some good shit, but i ain't checkin for it too much. Then there is hip-hop nation, which is appropriately titled.  It plays an even distribution of East, West, Midwest, South.  It was the first place i heard "Real Soon" which i honestly wouldn't have checked for.  Every once in a while they have a throwback joint or whatever, but its mostly new stuff.

But far and away, my favorite station is "Old Skool".  They play everything from Kool Herc to Sugar Hill Gang, Run DMC, to Eric B and Rakim, to A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Main Source, Public Enemy, Gangstarr, 3x Dope, Naughty by Nature, Digital Underground, Tupac, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, etc...you get the picture.

I mention this because now that i have it in my house, i'm probably gonna get it installed in my 4Runner.  No commercials, GREAT DJ's (Kurtis Blow) and even Premo has his own weekly show where he drops exclusive beats / remixes.  If you're a true head who is about HIP HOP, i promise you will enjoy it.  Easily worth $12 / month. Peace

I like XM better, but I think most people on this board would prefer Sirius.  I think there's 3 hiphop channels on XM, but I've never heard much on them that I'm that big on.  I was listening to the 90's channel yesterday and they played some old Dr. Dre stuff, but that's just everyonce in a while.

Snoop does have a monthly show on XM but I think it's like 1 saturday night a month for 4 hours, live from him home or something.  I've never heard it.

Sirius has Howard Stern, too but I'm not a fan of his.  Sirius is more liberal left/wing politically as well, while XM has sole licensing to Fox news and has more right wing political talk.

I think so, but I'm not positive.  I would imagine that though because all the programming is u.s. based, there's no foriegn news or music or anything.

that sucks, a couple of the homies round the way used to have their own hip hop show airing 3 hours a day but that got scrapped coz they didn´t play any commercial dumb shit. and it´d be great to have a access to stations that plays raw and uncut hip hop all day. wouldn´t mind havin an RnB and Rock channel aswell. i gotta check if you can get it over here coz our commercial radio sucks just like everywhere else in the world.

Im thinking of getting Sirius, cuz i only listen to the radio at 12pm for the "old Skool Show" with Jeff Garcia and any other time i listen in im listening to Leykis or The Triplets, i dont really listen to the music stations anymore, and i was listening to them with the free trial they have on the site and i was amazed at the selection of tracks they played on some of their shows,

My brother has Sirius, I have XM personally because it came with my car when I bought it. For other music genres, XM is great but for hip hop, it isn't that good. There are three hip hop stations, 65, which plays old school. Sometimes they play good 90's era stuff but then they go back to the 70's alot on there, I'm not really feeling that real old stuff from back then. XM 66 is stuck on southern crunk music and dipset,  :puke: Every now and then they'll play something good like that Dre/Snoop track called next episode 2006, which is a certified banger. XM 67 plays hip hop and some r&B but the hip hop they play is pretty much the same as what XM 65 plays, mostly crunk and dipset. One thing they do have is a show called progressive hip hop which comes on at 8pm pacific time on Sundays, I think it's 8, I listen to it on the way home from work. They play some nice quality hip hop during that time, stuff like what you would hear on the Wake Up Show.

Most of the time I listen to the neo-soul station which is really good and a couple of the rock stations. I don't listen to the hip hop station much because I hate that crunk/dipset/gunit shit so much.

My brother likes sirius, but I haven't heard to much of it so I can't judge.

At the moment Sirius is only available in the US. XM just branched out to Canada. God knows why it isn't worldwide yet.

Probably money problems.  As I understand it, Sirius is losing all kinds of money in an effort to monopolize the sattelite market, and XM wasn't ever making much to begin with.  I think they're both struggling although they have plenty of financial backers.  They're not going to go bankrupt or anything, but I don't think either has turned a profit yet.  Sirius is blowing all kinds of money trying to deep six XM.

I think it's just a matter of time though before both catch on pretty big and go global... since I've had XM I couldn't imagine having to listen to the regular radio anymore, lol.

LOL, I read something where XM was boasting about how they're in Canada and Sirius is not. it was either a false article or XM is spreading false rumors.
