Del Piero grabs Juve goal record

Italy striker Alessandro del Piero became Juventus' all-time leading scorer on Tuesday - and celebrated by going on to grab a hat-trick.

Del Piero, 31, only needed one goal to move past Giampiero Boniperti, with whom he shared the previous record of 182 goals for Juve.

He got that goal in the ninth minute of an Italian Cup tie against Fiorentina, and added two more as Juve won 4-1.

Boniperti played for Juventus between 1946 and 1961.

Del Piero did not appear to celebrate his first goal - which earned him the record - differently to any of his previous 182. He raised both arms and nodded to the small crowd at Stadio Delle Alpi.

The supporters then produced a banner which said "182+1, you have entered into legend. Thank you captain."

In the 17th, Del Piero scored his 184th for the club, a free kick through the wall, and after former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu made it 3-0, the record-breaker converted a 57th-minute penalty.

Fiorentina scored a consolation goal in the 64th through Valeri Bojinov.
