I think that DR and PREMO are tied, timbo does some bullish sometimes that missy garbagee
-
DJ Premier is better IMO but my favorite out of the two is Dre of course. Missy may be annoying at times but Timbo gave her some of his best beats.
-
U can't really ask that on a West Coast board, Dre will easily win.
-
Dre > Premo > Timbaland
Timbaland owns in R&B though, his R&B production >>>>>>>> Dre or Premo R&B production.

Word. Dre & Primo got a catalogue of classics. Timbo ain't got that. Dre's production is more sophisticated than Preme, but Preme keeps it stricty HIP HOP on his beats. I love all of them.

stricitly hiphop means... just samples from dusty grooves.. no real 'production' at all outside flipping someone elses shit..
-
i agree with overseer, it's hard to call dj premier a producer or a musician, he doesn't really produce or compose, he just mixes
-
DJ Premier RULES!!!

Yeah right ::) I just checked the booklet for "Moment Of Truth" & out of the 20 tracks only 3 contained samples.
-
it depends on the mood i'm in, but primo's beats make my head nod like no other
-
Good point, it all depends on what ur feelin at the time

what do you think dre does?...........he flips samples in his own way........you'd be surprised how much of his music is based off of samples.......its not as obvious because he has many of them replayed.........just cuz its a different form of producing doesnt mean you can take credit away from what premier has done
-
Primo is the essence of a Hip-Hop beatmaker/prodcuer
Dr. Dre is the best OVERALL out of those three thoug

aha, and dre always has original beats... uhm like - nuthin but a g-thang? california love? let me ride? lil ghe.... etc...
just to answer as 'simple' as you did
i think sampling is an art - not everybody can do it right, and most definately cant do it like premo!
difference between dre and premo is, premo doesnt COMPOSE with basic instruments like dre does nowadays
but he still is as much as a producer as dre is, since he records raps over his beats, mixes the product and i dont know if hes mastering...
but a lotta producers let other ppl master their shit - so this is no big deal, it's just b/c they see an advantage in it
i personally choose dre in the vote,
but saying premo isnt a producer just isnt right, hes only not composing in the old fashioned way, but even sampling is composing to me - but one could argue about that
-
I go with Premo
-
Its gotta b Dre! 8)
Premo is tight, he always makes ur head go!
Timbaland owns in R&B though
-
Hip hop has grown considerably over the last 30 years. To say that Premo's production style is more "real hip hop" than Dre's production style doesn't really make sense. If you look at it like that, then stuff that DJ Quik and the Roots have done over the years isn't "real hip hop" either, and that does what they do a huge disservice.

Uh, who said that Primo is "more real hip hop" than Dre? My statement was that, to me, Primo is a personification of a cut and dry, straight forward hip hop. Cutting and Scratching, breakbeats, etc. Dre doesn't really do his beats that way. He is still 100% hip hop, but Premier's style is reminscent of the way beats were crafted when hip hop first began. Dre's beats are usually much more sophisticated and has evolved. Primo has evolved as well, but he still practices a lot of old school techniques in his work.

-
plus premo is the best dj ever, nobody as ever match his scratches
-
of course premo is more hip hop than dre, i consider dre rap not hip hop, his music is good but not related to the hip hop culture

that doesnt mean more tracks had samples in them... not all samples need to be credited...
some of dre's biggest hit's were clear cut samples, hardly no difference to the original, "nothin but a g thang" "california love" "no digity"..

hip hop is a culture, a movement, rap is the musical part of that movement, if u make rap that dont relate to that community, well it's just rap. krs one is hip hop, eminem is rap, got it? I guess nwa was on some sort of movement 2 so i consider them hip hop, but 50 cent only makes music for cash so he's not hip hop to me

I disagree strongly with this. Dr. Dre definitely makes music for the hip hop community. He has innovated more than any one individual in the last 20 years. He's created a whole new style of music, when you view hip hop from a musical standpoint. To say that Dr. Dre is not hip hop is a slap in the face to not only Dre, but many other hip hop artists such as Dre who have innovated and tried doing things differently. I guess using your definition, Outkast isn't hip hop, Roots isn't hip hop, DJ Quik isn't hip hop, E40 isn't hip hop, no individual who does anything besides sampling a break beat and putting scratches in the middle is hip hop. No one who innovates anything is hip hop. Let's keep it real and rap like they did in the 70's. I understand why people wouldn't consider 50 cent hip hop but Eminem is definitely hip hop, I don't see how he isn't (although Encore was horrible). Eminem on his first 2 albums was lyrically killing it, so how is that not hip hop?
Is innovation a part of hip hop or isn't it?
-
1) This would be a poll
2) Don't make sense to compare Dre to Premo, same thing to compare Shaq to Mj
3) Dre and Premo have the best catalogue in their own style(s), no question about that
4) Why did you bring Timbo in the discussion. Don't get me wrong, he has been consistent for 8-9 years but he shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as Dre or Premo
-
primos r&b beats are smooth as fuck better than dre's efforts in that area

You fucking nuts...how can you say prem is not a real producers.....Dre said it himself,no matter what your style of production is or what you use,its still gonna be on how that person arrange the music...nigga all that finding samples ,and cutting and shit aint easy....you got to have a ear for different sounds......(you sounding like a east coast hata, running a west coast sit.)

no doubt...cant argue there, especially with the aaliyah albums
but besides that id pick premo cuz dre aint drop detox yet >:(

i say it is a tie

no u dont understand what i'm trying to say, roots and outkast are definatly hip hop, but dre's music happen to be more often rap than hip hop because peeps that are rapping on his beats always speaks about merderin other niggaz aind pimpin bitches and shit like that, whil jeru the damaja, afu-ra, gangstar, inspectah deck, nas, krs one, rakim and freddie foxxx are closer to the original definition of hip hop. closer than game 50 cent 2pac and snoop. Rap music aint always hip hop, but it can be good without being related to the movement afrika bambaata created 30 years ago
