I gotta go with 1996...
Besides Dre leaving D.R. and Pac passing away this was a real good year musical wise for the left coast, lots of dope west coast songs and albums came out at that time. Ofcourse D.R. held the crown that year with albums like AEOM, Doggfather, 7 Day Theory, D.R. Greatest Hits and songs like Tha Dogg Pound's Just Doggin, Soopafly's I Don't Hang, LBC Crew's Beware Of My Crew, Danny Boy's Slip-N-Slide and Tha Dogg Pound's I Do...
Other artists who released dope albums that year were Mr. X, Young Murder Squad, Lil Half Dead, Westside Connection, Eazy, DJ Yella, Sh'Killa, MC Eiht, MC Ren etc and there were some tight soundtracks with west coast songs on it too like The Substitute...
Things done changed since then... :'(
-
Good thread dude. I would say 96 too . Don forget westside conection came out that year too.
-
yeah, 1996 gets my vote as well. really hard to top that year for the west, or any coast for that matter.
-
Well, it's gotta be 1996.Xzibit came out, Ras, Short dropped another great album (probably his last that was REALLY good), alotta great music came out from the bay...Pretty much everybody from the west was droppin' tight stuff
-
Hmmm....it's always hard for me to separate years because I always catergorize music by whatever year I was in school....so Doggystyle and Regulate would be in the same year to me, even though it was 93 and 94, just because they both dropped in 4th grade for me.
But I'd say.............
95....when the West was at our prime, and before we started to decline after 96. This was the Lakers 2001 team...right in the middle of our greatness. That summer alone was better than any year after 96 for us. I can't even begin to name all the heat we had.....Cube Dre and everyone on the Friday Sdtk, WC n the Maad Circle - West up!!, Coolio (yes, his songs were dope), Skee-Lo I wish, Ahmad Back in the dayz, Digital Underground had that Oregano flow, The Twinz dropped, Luniz dropped I got five on it, I first heard E-40 and he dropped Sprinkle me, Too Short dropped gettin it, Dru Down dropped "Mack of the year", LBC Crew dropped Summertime in the LBC, Dogg Pound dropped Dogg Food and NY NY, Respect, Lets play house, Mack 10 came out and dropped Foe Life, Adina Howard dropped Freak like me and we know that she was to the west what Ciara and Cherish are to Atlanta right now, 2Pac dropped Me against the world and had Dear Mama and So many tears.................nothing can top that!!!!
92, 93, 94, and 96 were all amazing....but I think 95 gets on them. Since then....I'd say 2001 showed a LOT of promise, but nothing happened like we hoped it would.

1996 can't be beat.

anything before 1997 and nothing after 1987.
-
1992 - three of my all-time favorite West Coast albums were released: "The Chronic", "The Predator", and "Guerillas In Tha Mist".
I can see 1996, tho - that was definitely when the West was at its peak. And then it all fell apart just as suddenly by the year's end when Pac died and Snoop's 2nd album flopped and it was obvious that Death Row was falling off.
-
I liked 1993.
-
1995
-
92, 93, 94, and 96 were all amazing....but I think 95 gets on them.
-
probably 95, but I can't remember what year albums came out, other than a select few

95 and 96 were close, but I'd still go for 95. I think it was a stronger year, lookin at all the artists and songs I listed that dropped. All eyez on me and Bow Down did drop in 95, along with Doggfather, but song wise, 95 had that year beat. Plus, the Bay and L.A. were both murderin, and it wasn't just gangsta rap...the underground and the "gimmick" commercial songs were hot too.

"All Eyez On Me", "Bow Down" and "Doggfather" all dropped in '96, not '95.

-
1995...although 1996 was nearly as good.
Like R-Tistic said, so many good albums came out then: The Twinz, Dove Shack, Jayo Felony (Take A Ride!), etc...I think BG KnoccOut & Dresta dropped then too.
-
1999 wasnt too bad either
2001, Streetz Iz A Mutha, Rap Life 8)

1995 for sure. Quik's Safe And Sound, Dogg Food, Twinz Conversation, All Eyez On Me, you can't beat that.

-
1996 can't be beat.
-
1991 was my favorite year cause that was when I really got into West Coast hip hop.
Ice-T - Original Gangster
Ice Cube - Death Certificate
Cypress Hill - Cypress Hill
N.W.A. - Niggaz4Life
DJ Quik - Quik Is The Name
Comptons Most Wanted - Straight Checkn' Em
2Pac - 2Pacalypse Now
Boyz N The Hood the movie came out too.
-
I'm gonna go against the grain on this one....1994 was the best year of West Coast Hip-Hop. Here's my reasons:
- from the Above the Rim Soundtrack, "Regulate" and "Afro Puffs" exploded, launching the solo careers of Warren G, Lady of Rage, and Nate Dogg
- because of Warren G blowing up, Def Jam signed him and G-Funk recordings and we got albums from Warren G, Twinz, 5 Footaz, and Dove Shack because of the success of one Song
- "Fantastic Voyage" by Coolio was a smash hit
- saw the reunion of Dr. Dre and Ice Cube with "Natural Born Killaz"
- Death Row released Murder was the Case soundtrack, which was a huge hit, and launched Danny Boy, Sam Sneed, Swoop G, Lil' C-Style, and Jewell as solo artists (even though between the 5 of them, only 3 total albums dropped)
- one of the greatest diss songs of all time, "Dollaz + Sense", dropped
- Lil' Half Dead's classic first solo album dropped (supposedly featuring some ghost producing from Dr. Dre)
- Above the Law's "Uncle Sam's Curse" dropped featuring the west coast Anthem "Black Superman"
- Kokane's "Funk upon a Rhyme" dropped (out of print album which many west coast fans fiend for)
- K-Dee's "Ass, Cash, or Gas" album dropped (out of print album which many west coast fans fiend for)
anything else from '94 I'm forgetting?
-

Nope. Originally from NO. He moved to the Rich when he was 14 or somethin like that, then he moved back to NO when he realized he could make millions if he started caliming the south again.
