I work with this guy who hates west coast rap and I'm looking for some tracks that might change his mind that the west coast is more than pimpin' bitches and killing people. He's 30 years old and big into Fu Schnickens, old school Wu-Tang, pretty much everything from the late 80s and early 90s east coast era. The only west coast rappers he knows/likes are Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, 2pac, and the ones from the Menace II Society soundtrack, which is the only west coast CD he has. PLEASE NO DOGG POUND! I've already tried. lol
So far I have:
Planet Asia - Everyday Ritual
Masta Ace - Da Grind
Sly Boogy - Ridiculous
Frontline - Black Jack (the ones signed to E-A-Ski's label, not the ones from LA)
Ras Kass - It Is What It Is
Ras Kass - The End
Crooked I - Leave Us Alone
Celly Cel - It's Goin' Down Tonight
3X Krazy - Keep It On The Real
D.O.C. - The Formula
-
A little Suga Free never hurt anyone. Pimpin in the year 3000
-
Play him some Paris shit, D.O.C. he should like too.I've some some nice Pharcyde songs too
-
Masta Ace - Da Grind ???
Ace is from Brooklyn
-
I'll be checking for Paris real soon. Thanks for the suggestion. Other than No One Can Do It Better, I don't think he'd like any D.O.C. stuff. And I think he'd stop talking to me if I gave him some Suga Free. I don't think his wife would like his music too much.
Masta Ace - Da Grind ???
Ace is from Brooklyn
Coulda sworn he was from the west coast, but I'll take the song off just in case.

doc is texan, but you can point out dre's attention to funk. some dre instrumentals with a gang of live instruments are so alive with music (xxplosive, light speed, bang bang, some l.a. niggaz, any from the chronic if you can get 'em instrumental) that they may help one understand the proficient musicality of west coast production.

As far as I'm concerned, D.O.C. is west coast. He's never been on that down south tip and he's pretty much Dre's right hand man.
But I wish it was as simple as giving him beats. Dude doesn't like the west coast flavor of music at all aside from the weed songs and the basic west coast rappers that everyone has heard about. I'm looking for the more lyrical type of west coast artist with a more old school type beat to accompany them. Believe me, I've tried giving him some newer stuff the Messy Marv, Balance, Young Hoggs, Xzibit, Federation, and he just tosses the CD in the garbage after listening to it.
-
why even give him anything? let the faggot think for himself
he's only missing out
-
why even give him anything? let the faggot think for himself
he's only missing out
cause he works with him, probably in a situation where they can listen to music and if the dude he worked with dug what he dug he could enjoy his shit in peace.
i feel you, well yeah just say DOC is from west coast and pump that shit.-T
-
if the guy doesn't like Tha Dogg Pound he doesn't like west coast rap
-
Play this i was just bumping this tracklist
Dj Quik - Pitchin On A Party
D.O.C - Formula
Ras Kass - Kiss U
Crooked I -Str8 Bosses
Bishop Lamont - Toe Tag
, Sly Boogy - Itz Nuttin
, Botha Lynch Hung - My Papers,
Yukmouth - Nuttin To A Boss,
E40 - Record Haterz
, Mac Dre - Feelin Myself
, Andre Nickatina - Train With No Love
, Ya Boy - Cali
, Roscoe - In My Hood
-
Much appreciate Cvrle. I already know he won't like Lynch but I'll check out the rest of your list.
why even give him anything? let the faggot think for himself
he's only missing out
He asked me to do this after I told him I could. I'm not trying to force it down his throat or anything. I have a pretty good list of songs. All I need is a couple more. I can understand why he doesn't really like the newer west coast rap. After you reach a certain age, everything starts to sound the same. That's why I'm trying to find somethng unique away from the typical funky/hyphy/etc. sound.

Just get him these albums:
Soul On Ice,
- "Etc", "If/Then", "Nature Of The Threat", whole CD
Death Certificate
- "Us", "A Bird In The Hand", "True To The Game", whole CD man
AND:
The D.O.C is Texan, period.
So just because he has a CD with Dr. Dre, he's westcoast? Lil Wayne and Juelz Santana have a duo-CD coming out, I guess they'll be switched up regionally too. Dre's production sound now isnt what you'd expect from a stereotypical westcoast producer though. Opposingly, D.O.C isnt the stereotypical southern rapper either, but bare with me. The guy is still relevent here in his home city, still involved with our( Dallas') rap scene and everything. (Yes we have a "rapscene". My dad produced for a funk-inspired dallas group on Profile Records in the 90's. THEY ALMOST went on a tour with DJ Quik, but Profile was bought out by Arista near that time.) Guy's done more for Dallas than he has ever done for the Westcoast period, he's texan alright. He's the first rap artist from this city to blow, first Southern based rapper to work with Dre, (Prior to Devin) and one of the FIRST to actually get a critically acclaimed 5 star album. They werent even giving southern artists those type of ratings. (Outkast of all groups, couldnt even get a 5 star from anyone and musically Outkast is fucking with anybody.) His debut had a trail of funk production (Dr.Dre) and generalized eastcoast lyricism and flow, -- the album was disguised and thats why a lot of people cant or dont credit D.O.C as southern. Even though, thats how we communicate in hiphop, influence of predecessors regardless of the region! Majority of the guys proteges are actually from Dallas as opposed to California. Pretty Black, Six-Two, etc. Go ahead and bring up Lil Eazy, and I will bring up more Dallas Locals. DOC's even had a baby with Eryka Badu. (Who, in case you didnt know - Is a Dallas superstar). Dont get me wrong though, HE IS Dre's righthand man. Thats quoted straight out his mouth. But theres a reason why he has that "segregated father from the mother and rest of the family" relationship to Dallas' rapscene. Because fucking with Dre period, is a podeium in the industry. Regardless if you are behind the scenes (Doc) or blatant (Scott Storch). No one Willingly leaves a highpoint like that to go back and re-establish themselves as solo solo artists (ala Game still TALKS about Dre, and Scott is STILL with DRE) with new resources when they already have ample enough resources. Thanks for your time.
-
If he didn't like balance, he won't like frontline. Stick with older Planet Asia. Some Self Scientific. Dilated. Murs. Zion I. Blackalicious. Lyrics Born. Psycho Realm.
If that doesn't do it, he won't like west coast shit.
-

South Central Cartel - All Day, Every Day
Murder Squad fea. Jayo Felony, BG Knocc-Out & Gangsta Dre'sta - Knock On Wood (remix)

Thanks for the help everyone! I really appreciate it. I can probably put together a double disc with all of the good songs. I'm going through the thread right now giving everyone props.
-
Give him Souls Of Mischief. Their style is more inline with an east coast sound. Put him onto some Pharcyde too. They're both intelligent, great production, and totally not about gang bangin and bussin caps n shit.
East Coast heads shold be able to get into them easily.

surely SOMETHING in this huge thread could help but the question is...is your co worker willing to give anything a listen after your previously unsuccesful attempts?

I thought the DOC and Erykah Badu thing was just a rumor.
Hopefully DOC doesn't start dressing in drag, like Erykah's last 2 victims, err I mean well respected lyricists.

LOL, I always thought "and ya don't stop" was the worst song on Regulate. Prolly the closest thing to filler on the album.
-
Give him "the Infrastructure" with Messy Marv and Guce. My favorite CD last year.

Lyrically/rapping wise yeah, but that's not the point. It's the most uniquely produced track on the album in my opinion, the sample breaks are gorgeous.
