The reason is because the South has its own sound right now. U can easily tell when its a south song just by listening to the beat. They use the 808's and that bass and its their own sound. Its not just one artist using that sound. Its everybody from the south that has that sound.
The west use to have their own sound. Before they used those "worms" and those dope basslines.
The west has lost its sound. Everybody is doing their own thing. No album has a certain feel to it. When u listen to new ice cube "laugh now cry later" it doesnt have a sound. Its all over the place. Itll have a couple westcoast beats a bunch of eastcoast beats and some south beats. So it doesnt have a certain feel to it. Same wit most westcoast artists today.
Im not even talking about bringing back those "worms" im just saying that we dont have that certain feel no more.
Before when u picked up a Dre or a Snoop dogg album they use to have a certain sound all thoughout the cd. Not no more on westcoast albums.
WE NEED to get a sound and use it troughout the album.

But when you critisise that the westcoast doesn't have a own sound no more, you have to ask youself the question why.
You argued with Cube's album, but why you think artists like Snoop and Cube do that? Because they have to. The old westcoast sound is played out, and when you are a megastar like Snoop you have to unite more sounds. If you look at succesfull albums these days, nobody has an own sound. Today, artists don't go to the studio and put an album together, they're just buyin' some beats from different producers. This is why no album has one sound throughout the album.
I also think that the wc needs a new sound, but that's on the "new west" artists right now. I don't blame vets like WC, Warren G or DPG for still usin' that old sound. They're just doin' they're thang. I also don't blame Snoop and Cube for tryin' to sell albums on the one hand and to make music on the other.
In fact, it's just the damn music industry who decides. People will always follow them. Right now, the music industry doesn't want to give the wc a chance.
It's on the new Westcoast artists to create something new, not on Cube or Snoop.

Why does it have to be a reason why the south is selling right now? Music goes in trends. It resides in the south right now. They paid they dues so there is other music to like and appreciate. South, North, West, East it don't matter.

a homie i think i pretty much agree with you, especially since u emphasized not bringing back the old sound, because it aint about bringing back nothing. when you hear some southern hip hop or east coast hip hop, even though any given artist may try out different sounds in the interest of being more "universal", overall they still have a sound to them. some of it lies in the production and sonic aspect and some of it lies in the overall swagger of the artist themselves. we've been lost out here for so long that we dont have a sound anymore, we know that the old sound aint working but we dont know where to go with it for the future, so the west coast doesnt have a sound right now. my personal feeling is that our sound has traditionally been funk-based (NOT G-FUNK, JUST FUNK) so i think that wherever we take it in the future should be a new evolution of funk, thats what were best at, thats whats in our blood, and trying to come out with this "universal sound" aint gonna cut it because we wont sound natural doing it until we've established our own defining sound.

Only very few artis are doing Funk..and when they do, it sounds a little bit like 94/95..which is not bad, it's smooth....but still the same!!

the WEST IS PARTY MUSIC!!! It always has been. Its that when u play a south song u know what ur getting. U know its gonna have alot of bass and its gonna have those 808's. No matter what artist it is, as long as its from the south.
If MTV plays one song wit that bass and 808 and then theres another song from somebody else wit bass and those 808 and people are liking it, then they find more of the same sound and then everybody around the country is listening to it.
If MTV plays lets say Bishop Lamont and people like it and then play another person from the west like Rass Kass, they dont have the same sound so Bishop Lamont can blow up and become the next "Game". While Rass Kass never blows up and people dont really care for him and his music and sound.
Game is a perfect example. He is from the west. He blew up. But he doesnt really have a sound. So no one else from the West blew up. So its not a whole movement.
OMAR CRUZ can be what brings the westcoast back. Because he is bringing a whole new sound to the table. Hes bringing a movement. Hes bringing those beats wit that latin sound so there unique. Hes bringing a bunch of Latino Rappers together and bringing that Latino sound to the table.
He is the only one wit a chance to bring the westcoast back other then Dre

I have never heard Khayree talking bad about Mac Dre,but Mac Dre did a couple of diss tracks towards Khayree. Yes,I got these tracks,but it has been years since I gave those tracks a spin,so I don't remember which album they're on. I got so many Mac Dre albums/compilation that I mix them all up. I got some friends that are crazy into Mac Dre,so I could ask them.
I remember that Dubee was also featured on one of the diss tracks towards Khayree.

I hope the west doesnt go down the Hyphy route cause to me, hyphy music is boring although i understand heres a culture around it now. Plus stop looking to dre to bring a new west coast sound. Doesn't the west coast have another producer thats inventive enough to create his own sound other than Dre? Maybe thats the difference...
We have to look to the new West Coast. If Dre or Quik or Battlecat invent some new sound for the west coast then great but they've done their part, its time for new cats to step up to the bar.

thanks, but if he had split from Khayree from that point on then i believe he was still great after. You don't consider genie of the lamp or al boo boo as classic in league? Sorry if my phrasing is sloppy I'm pretty high but I'm basically asking your thoughts on those albums, cause while I think Khayree's work with mac dre is great I feel he's done work that's of the same caliber without him as well.

The thing is why so many people are hating on the south is, because they feel the south doesnt bring anything new to the game. And thats true, but you can say the same thing about the west. But the major difference between this is, when the West was coming on top, with the gangbang music, people actually thought these rappers were for real. Cuz you had the riots, so many people dying over there cuz of gang violence. So when these rappers were coming up like NWA and Ice T etc, people actually thought they were telling the truth, and they were gangbangers themselves. And that they were having a real reason for being this violent.
I think thats the major difference between the south and the west. Cuz people know when they see these southern rapper on the TV, that its all fake. It was the same when the west was on top, but at the time people believed them. And when you see these southern rappers on the TV now it all seems so fake. Thats why you got so many people saying the south stole this and that. Cuz you would think after all these years after the west has beeen on top, they could come up with a little more creativity.

Guys, it has always been about the party. It's been that way since the 70's. Sugar Hill Gang came out with a party song. Bam dropped Planet Rock in '82 that was a huge party song. Then you have Run DMC making several party songs like You Be Illin', Tricky, etc. Erick B and Rakim blew up with party music, I Know You Got Soul, Paid In Full.
NWA and Public Enemy became major forces due to their popularity on the streets and with the heads but who blew up the biggest commercially? People like MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice and to a lesser extent, Young MC and Digital Underground because they made party music. Gangsta rap was becoming a force but it was when Dr. Dre made gangsta rap party music with the use of G-Funk that it became larger than life. East coast heads like Black Moon, Wu-Tang, Nas and Mobb Deep were kicking east coast gangsta shit and it was popular but when Biggie made east coast gangsta shit into party music with Juicy, Big Poppa, One More Chance, etc, the east coast came back with a vengenace. Jay-Z and Nas adopted the same formula for their 96 releases and Puffy took it to extremes when Biggie past. The South blew up with Cash Money and No-Limit using the same theme, party music and that continues to this day. The west coast's brief resurgence from '98 - '02 was based on party music being made by Dre, Quik and Battlecat.
The south is big because they're following the same formula that's been used since Sugar Hill Gang.
