It's sooo dope. I've been listening to it all day yesterday and this morning. How come people rarely mention it?
Great social commentary even though some of his opinions i disagree with but then i'm from a different environment. I wish more west coast albums could be as amazing as this, definately in my top ten albums of all time. 8)
-
i think most ppl recognize this albums greatness.. def Cube's best album..
-
I like it but I think Amerikkkaz Most Wanted was better. Both are very dope albums though 8)
-
i like the production on an album like lethal injection better than this BUT the production here is still incredible and the raps are just GOLD. His rapping and lyrics are fucking WHOAH. Exceptional, superior, classic.
-T
-
yeah D.C was consistent as all hell and hit so many angles. Cube's best album in that league/field if you ask me.
-
ITZ A SHAME HE IZNT A CRIP BUT HEZ COO ANYWAY 8)
-
I thought Ice Cube was a crip. and he extricated himself from his set when he went to that trade school in AZ or some shit.
also, based on his music and the fact that he says 'loc' all the time, I got the impression he was crip affiliated if not an actual member (like Dre, they hung around eazy, and lived in a crip hood, had crip friends, said loc etc.)

I KNEW DAT I WAZ JUST JOKING CUZZ 8)
-
Cube was crip affilated, havent heard of him actually doing the damn thing as far as a bonafide gangmember however.
-
Cube's colorblind 8).
Death Certificate is my second favorite album. Lyrically the shit can't be fucked with. I think he came perfect on that one with the gangstafied political shit. Plus the beats were dope.
-
This brother was a good brother
didnt get to an excessive amount of trouble
but it was one thing
it was one thing,
IT WAS THE WRONG NIGGA TO FUCK WIT!!!!!!!
-
cube's best album, probably in my top 3 for greatest of all time period
-
I honestly dont know what being a Crip has to do with anything. . .
...but that said this is definitely Cube best album. All of Cube's first 4 albums are classics, but this is the granddaddy of them all.
-
you gotta listen to this shit high to realise how fuckin dope it is, even the intro is fuckin dope.

co-sign, from a musical viewpoint LI is way better, mastering, production etc is much better, lyrically i'd say DC is the better one. Both are classics in my opinion though.
-
could never really get into it, will give it another listen cause summer vacation is my fav cube track
-
Dope indeed but Cube was at his prime when The Predator came out IMO
-
Yeah, funny thing is, I remember the day that album dropped and it was bananas. It was in heavy rotation when it first came out. That was a good year for West Coast hip-hop, pre-Chronic era. I specifically remember it, because I had just graduated from High School in May, 1991, and Ice-T dropped the O.G. Original Gangster album that same month, which was also bangin', and then in October of that same year, Cube dropped Death Certificate. Then a month after Death Certificate dropped, 2Pac's debut, 2Pacalypse Now was released.
I just bumped Death Certificate about a week ago, and it was nostaligic. Still sounds as good today as it did back then.
you must be old as fuck
-
didnt get around to hearing this album too much. cube went off on some racist tirades that didnt sit well.

dude. you've missed out on a CLASSIC. I'm assuming those racist tirades didn't sit well with you especially if you haven't heard the album all that much?

It is a dope album, a classic in my opinion. I love storytelling in rap, and ice cube is one of the best at it.
-

I get really pissed often at rappers reverse racism. I think any really intelligent person knows it's not a certain race of people but a class of people that is the 'man' and the 'oppressor'. In other words, it's not whites/jews/asians it's RICH people and while there are alot of well of whites/asians there are alot of poor ones just like there are alot of rich asshole black people(like there is rich assholes of any race).
In other words, I'm DEEPLY disappointed that when Katrina happened and Kanye had a chance to say something to the world that would be quoted and heard instead of being an intelligent person and saying "George Bush doesn't care about poor people" (everyone in America, including blacks would have been behind him quoting that, making a stir, no doubt) his dropout ass said "george bush doesn't care about black people" (now only the same black people who've always said such things are behind him, not the whole nation) cause it's ridiculous to act like Bush doesn't care about black republicans in the oval office and that he does care about the poor whites in new orleans you know?

DEATH CERTIFICATE IS ONE OF THE BEST WEST COAST ALBUMS EVER!! SOME OF YALL YOUNGER ONES, DONT REALIZE HOW BIG THAT ALBUM WAS..I PUT IT UP THERE WITH THE CHRONIC.. ITS DEFINILTY CUBES BEST ALBUM, BY FAR..
-
classic album but honestly I prefer AMW a little more. but this album is great, and i like the whole life and death side aspect of it. and color blind is a dope posse cut. other than that, my summer vacation is my other favorite track. I remember reading an interview with Shorty (I think) from Da Lench Mob and he was saying how Ice Cube got the idea for My Summer Vacation from shit that the dudes from da lench mob actually did or some shit like that.

+1 man, thats what hold me back from ras kass a long time. he acts like all white people are devils and all black people are gods, like it just takes a look at your skin to judge how good or bad you are.
i like ras kass for his lyrics, metaphors etc. but i think hes stupid for making discriminating statements about white people while he blames white people for discriminating black people.
imo everyone is equal, but not everyone seems to get this.
come to think of it, guerilla of the mists, are you ras kass?

LMAO
I used to hate that dude Guerilla for that shit, but now I see he just does it to piss of Infinite (who is the homey too, but at least Guerilla really isn't racist)

Well like most things that require stating your opinion on something, Hip Hop is a representation of the artists ideas. Albums like Death Certificate and The Predator showed the rising tensions of race relations in Cali and the eventual effects of the riots. Cube gave his viewpoint from a African American standpoint. Now Black Korea went a little too far IMO, but I think the stance Cube was trying to do is shed light to the fact that race relations are fucked up in this country. Now what do we do about it? He called that LA riots before they even happened.

Good point. I doubt most people would co-sign some of the things Cube said on his earlier albums, but at the same time it really does bring you back to that specific time and place when LA was just a powder keg just waiting to explode. Whether you like it or agree with it or not, he really did call it.
-
I think because how honest and straight forward Cube was about social and political issues is why people want that Cube back on at least some tracks on his albums. He really just tapped a few issues on Laugh Now Cry Later. Did not really dig into the issues. I hope he will do it on 1 or 2 tracks on Raw Footage. The subject matter is there and we have just as many problems now as we do when Death Certificate was out. Cube is one of my favorites, probably moved up in my book after 2pac died for me.
-
Cube was in his prime around the time of all that happening, his inner tensions grew as LA's did....he did call it, he was in the time and place to just like Bob Dylan's political assessment when he was in his prime with inner tensions growing in the early mid 60's to call it...in other words, it has to be a cat like Cube/Dylan at that time (ie: a young cat) to have that affect now. Cube is too removed from what's going on (not a criticism, he as every right) to be the barometer on a grand social level anymore. But he's still the shit.

True. I think he can still give this 2 cents on alot of the issues going on today though. I think once We Be Clubbin blew up, that political Cube was gone for the most part. I think he would REALLY have to sit back, take his time to do a Death Certificate type of record now. Party records are just 2nd nature to him at this point.

Two things
a) based on what i've heard from/about LNCL it's the most political discussion he's done in years so yeah his two cents will be there and that's great
b)He does really good club/party music. he stays clever lyrically (not as much as before, but still puts newjacks to shame) and his delivery and voice are still great, so i can't bitch

100% co sign what you saying Tanj. I was upset with the Peace disc because he said in interviews that the Peace disc would be a return to a more political Ice Cube, giving his opinion on how to deal with social issues in this country. But it ended up being a party record so it almost seemed to me like he "settled" for the party stuff. With that said, Peace had some dope ass records on it and with the success of We Be Clubbin and You Can Do It, I guess who can blame him. He never really had a mega hit like We Be Clubbin that catered to the clubs like that.
-
true but he had songs like 'good day' that had that scope of success. i miss that kind of shit, that's why i like dogg pound, so simple and yet it's what we want you know?
like when daz says dumb ass lines like 'good to see you here homey, good to see you there' it's the shit to me cause it's like...i can relate to that...I've been chillin with all the homies barbecuin, drinkin, smokin and it's just SIMPLE: I'M happy to be here posting with the homies.

Yeah but Good Day was more of a chill record. You knew exactly what audience would possibly catch on to We Be Clubbin. I actually thought he would catch hell for making a song like that so shortly after being super hood on Bow Down but it all worked out for the most part. But yeah I dig his party records.
-
we be clubbin is hood as fuck. i heard that shit non stop for years in my suburb-that-was-quickly-turning-into-a-ghetto in Rialto/San Bernardino area growing up

Yeah it is. I rarely hear it in the clubs but they play Hypnotize, California Love and all these other songs instead. That song will STILL set a club off. That was a dope soundtrack too, The Players Club. That We Be Clubbin remix was dope as fuck too.

i can see your point homie but if you was black and all you seen was black people drowning in water, stuck on rooftops, little babies cryin because their hungry, police about to kill people because they were trying to survive, media callin these u.s. citizens refugees, and george bush just flyin over the city lookin not doin shit...now im not tryin to exclude the white people that was affected in N.O. but majority of the people was black so u can understand where kanye was coming from as a black persons point of view and lets be real if he did say poor people instead of black people majority of the u.s. would think he was talkin about black people anyway because thats what u saw on tv

Kanye has been known to say some asinine shit, and his New Orleans quote isn't any different. If he would have said "poor people" instead of "black people", there most definately would not have been a backlash towards Kanye. Besides, everyones houses were destroyed in N.O. and their lives were ruined. It was the poor people, who were mostly black, who just so happened to stay in N.O. That doesn't justify Kanye saying Bush hates black people.

That track was nuts. My radio station played it like crazy maybe 2001 or sometime around then(the years have blended together)... Was it on a soundtrack or something?

my heart goes out to all the people who was affected by katrina ya know but me being black homie i can understand where kanye was comin from i was like hell yea props to him for sayin that shit cuzz it took some balls to say that because thats how i was feelin and how most of my friends was feelin i guess its to each its own everybody got they own opinion but anyway i can already see this turnin into some race shit so fuck bush and all the people who voted for him and death certificate is one of the best hip hop albums of all time its still relavant to this day
-
to me it doesn't take balls to say black people are victims. that's all rappers do, and it's politically correct.
it would have taken more balls to be willling to say something different and intelligent, to unite people with his statement regardless of race...but it's not cool to seem smart or positive, that's why he brags out of dropping out of college and not the fact that he went in the first place
-T

Same with me on Lethal Injection. Cave Bitch didnt go down to well cause i'm mixed race, although my mum aint white, my dads white.

yeah, i totally agree. a lot of rappers make racist statements as well, and to say white people hate black people is too stupid for words, and wether he points towards bush, the pope or any other white person. me being white, i can officially state i dont hate anyone except for people that hate me, and wether you are white, black, orange, yellow, green, red or blue that doesnt matter to me really :-\
its so cheap and easy to say something like that without trying to give the good example and actually try to improve the situation. its easy to criticize people, to judge people and make bold (generalised) statements like that but actually help, make people understand the situation and try to improve eachothers view on the world and stuff like that, that is much harder, and thats where many people give up...
imo, kanye dropping out of college and boasting about stuff like he is the new jesus, bush hates black people etc. he is not really someone to take seriously, his music is dope, good producer, but as a person he is kinda weak.
-
and what's so shitty about it with him is that ONE word would have made all the difference to me, you know?
-T
-
after thinking about it I say that^^^ because were I given the chance to say something I would have said EXACTLY what he said but with 'poor' instead of 'black' and would have felt that that was the best I could do, given a sound bite you know?
-T

to me it doesn't take balls to say black people are victims. that's all rappers do, and it's politically correct.
it would have taken more balls to be willling to say something different and intelligent, to unite people with his statement regardless of race...but it's not cool to seem smart or positive, that's why he brags out of dropping out of college and not the fact that he went in the first place

my dude this is hip hop it was started by black people so it may seem like rappers are making black people seem like victims to you but to them there telling it how they see it and how they feel from a black perspective so you can't fault them for that. To me it took balls to say that because no other black entertainer nor any entertainer would say that but i bet they feeling they same way kanye was, i agree kanye may make some outlandish comments, and cries like a bitch when he doesn't win a award but i give him props for stating how he feels about that situation and i bet you a lot of the people in new orleans felt the same way

man kanye spoke on some real shit i still salute him for saying what he said and if thats what you call stupid man then thats your opinion...but its seem like you think he planned backstage like " u know what im gonna say george bush doesn't like black people that would make everyone mad and cause a stir" after watching the video it seems like to me he was just speaking from off top of his head it didn't seem like he meant to say it or planned it thats just how he felt...but hey thats your guys opinion

The people in new orleans? You want to know what the people in new orleans saw? POOR PEOPLE FUCKED. ALL COLORS. It ain't 1950, or even 1990. race is the way they divide the people, classism is REALLY what's going on and you're right Kanye didn't plan it. he probably doesn't understand the concept of classism because he's too busy saying shit that it's cool to say, playing the victim.
