The Chronic had 4 and Doggystyle had 3 and the Murder was the case soundtrack, seems to me that Suge was pullling that bullshit didn't really promote it right or something am i missing here?
-
Ur gonna have to ask Suge about that. Those were the only 2 singles on the album.

perhaps limited Funds!

yeah I was thinking that too but then Pac had like 5 or 6 videos for AEOM?
-
I myself have wondered this as well. There were 4 singles: Let's Play House, NY NY, Respect, & Do What I Feel. I have always wondered why Respect never got a video, and why in the fuck Smooth was not a single. That song would've blown up back then.
-
smooth was originally suppossed to be the first single. I'm pretty sure they wanted to use the hype of the east vs west and make NY NY the big single

Didn't Let's Play House come out first? I can't remember. You're probably right about Smooth being the first single, because I remember Lil Jay put up the original version of Smooth on his site. It was called Sho Shit or something back then and was recorded off the radio. If anybody has that they should upload it for the people who haven't heard it. The retail of Smooth shits on that version though.
-
Suge signing 2pac put any other projects to be put out or promoted on the back burner for a bit. Dogg Food basically got alot of its promo off of 2 things
NY NY video and song
Album got caught up in that C Delores Tucker madness
that and just the anticipation from hearing them on Chronic, Doggystyle etc.
-
yes, lets play house was the first single. There are several reasons why I think Smooth got cut as a single, the biggest reason I would say is because Daz is not featured on it. I think that is the main reason why they picked Let's Play House. And even though Daz is not on NY NY, they wanted to play off the whole East vs West thing.
Smooth was called Sho Shit, and it was premiered on 92.3 the beat, an hour long interview w/ snoop, daz, kurupt, where they played all kinds of songs. That interview is on the net, I have it, I know a lot of people on here have it. Not a whole lot of difference in Sho Shit and smooth, however there are some tweaks in the instrumental I think, just kinda makes the retail sound a whole lot better.
-
Would you mind uploading that interview? Thanks man!
-
Ridin, Slipin & Slidin should be a single with video 8). That track kills me anytime! Whole Dogg Food kills me anytime, great classic album.

Yeah, it would be appreciated, sounds interesting.

Dogg Food was originally supposed to come out in the summer of 1995 but Death Row kept pushing it back until it finally came out in October, I think the constant push back of the album killed some of the buzz off but my personal opinion is that Suge did not see the album doing more than the usual 2 million that bascially their soundtracks were doing at the time and not the numbers that a Dre, Snoop or Pac album would do so they just stopped promoting it after a couple of videos

+ 1 Homie 8)

The C. Delores Tucker bullshit and 2Pacs signing is why.
-
Dogg Food would have been even better if they included "Don't Stop," "Jakkmove," and "Got My Mind Made Up."

uhh no it wouldn't, those songs are nowhere near on par w/ anything on dogg food, and they were not even recorded during the dogg food era, other than Got My Mind Made Up.
-
Don't Stop with Pac was recorded in 1996 I think for their second album dope shit 8)

partly but also back then there was so much hype behind any death row album. Dogg Food followed two commercial and classic albums in Chronic and Doggystyle.

Its a great album so I aint know

you're right; just like Chadrick said in an other topic, it's all about timing. for example the chronic, doggystyle, and the murder was the case soundtrack all had a perfect timing for a release.
With acclaim came criticism. While riding high on the commercial success of Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dogg, Death Row was blasted by several activist groups and public figures in the media for its glorification of the violence associated with the gangsta rap image that most of its artists promoted. The media criticism, meanwhile, grew louder by the summer of 1995, as dissenters zeroed in on Death Row's highly publicized forthcoming release, Dogg Food — the debut release by Tha Dogg Pound. The flak made the shareholders in Interscope Records' parent company, Time Warner, nervous - so much so that the company sold all of its shares in Interscope to MCA Music Entertainment. Dogg Food, meanwhile, was postponed from its intended July release date to October.
i know, it's wikipedia, but i think this information is valid, as i've read something similar from other sources.
but 2 million is actually pretty good; maybe dogg food would sell a bit more if it was released on the perfect moment, but i doubt it would sell more than 3 million.

only needed 2 videos to go Platinum anywayz, but I agree that "Ridin' Slippin' & Slidin'" and "Smooth" should have gotten some videos as well, would have come out dope for sure... I love that album though, nothing but classic material
