Which is better ? Hard to say..
I can't see anything coming close to these 2 series.. finally got done with The Wire season 5, which is the last.

I seen a few episodes of the wire..seems cool but nothin' that caught my attention in a major way..same with sopranos..ain't seen a shit load though..

the Wire even if the last season is dissapointing but still better than Sopranos last season which has way too many letdowns ... 1st 5 seasons are classic though ... now my favorite (not the best , my favorite) TV- Series still stays The Shield and the last season is off the hook 8)

I'd pick The Wire because of Season 1,2, and 4.
On a side note, AMC is putting out some quality shows. Breaking Bad started out amazing, and if Mad Men keeps up with how it's been already it may be better than both Wire and Sopranos.

Everyone would agree with me except for dubcc, for some reason dubcc has always had more people picking the Wire but it is universally known that the Sopranos is the best series ever and can never be matched. Dont get me wrong the Wire is real good but Sopranos is on a whole other level. It will looked at 40 years from now like The Godfather is looked at now, no show has ever come close to the Sopranos and no show ever will 8)

That's not true. A lot of critics pick the Wire as the best TV show of all time, the fair thing to say is that they're both on the same level. The reason I prefer the Wire though is that it has tackled practically every issue involving the workings of an inner city. The themes that it touched simply cannot be summed up by writing about it. The main character of the Wire is Baltimore. As a viewer, we were able to see the parallel systems of the police, government and the streets. The inner city school system was nailed, and the stories of the 4 kids were at times heartbreaking. I'm sure that soon, there will be classes taught in college on TV Shows because they are now getting to the point where they aren't just there to be popcorn entertainment. They're being seen as literary work now. One show to look out for is Mad Men, if it continues to be as amazing as Seasons 1 and 2, then we might have new debate going on including three shows.

Only just got through the last series of the wire, all i can say is that as a piece of work all 5 series are a classic.
Im yet to see the sopranos.

Agree with Javii, The Wire gets a LOT of praise in the media and by movie fanatics, it just didn't get the enormous mainstream breakthrough that Sopranos had.

For me it's the Wire because at there worst Wire kills Sopranos. No episode of the Wire comes even close to as bad as the Episode "Christopher" from season 4, about Columbus day. Most of season 4 as a whole was pretty bad. Also, with time the earlier episodes of Sopranos don't seem as impressive as they once did. I don't get that feeling from Godfather. Godfather stands a lot stronger as time goes by.
Of course Sopranos is going to be picked as the best 40 years from now, but that's because it was amazing and popular. I have no doubt that as TV progresses in the new cable era over the next 40 years there will be plenty of shows as good or better than Sopanos, but I'm not sure if any will be anywhere near as popular. It had the right hook to it; an adult show about the mob with a mob boss that sees a shrink. Take away either of those aspects and the show is cancelled with in the first season.

not the best episode of the sopranos, but it was still good, imo. had some good comedy in it.

Except it was unintended comedy. It was a shitty episode directed by Michael Imperioli and it was supposed to be a serious episode. It was a joke. Think of the worst TV series drama of all time and the worst episode that drama had, and then realize that Sopranos 42 is worse. It made the film Crash look realistic.

And like Javii said...I can also easily imagine classes being taught on TV shows and it's safe to say that The Wire will play a major role that. The way those dialogues are written, that's pure class.
I heard that they're gonna release the entire Sopranos collection on Blu-Ray, so I'll wait until it comes out and then I'll watch it. So, I haven't voted since I haven't seen the Sopranos yet.

Anyone who puts Lost - which is a great story held back by a lot of very bad acting and some truly dreadful script writing - on a par with The Wire - which has a depth of character development you wouldn't find in most novels and some astounding acting - must have been dropped on their head as a kid. Either that or their mother drank a shit load while pregnant.

So the whole debate about Columbus being a hero or villain? Compared to Hitler? Arguments about antisemitism? That was all satire? Maybe I'm wrong then. It doesn't make the episode any less stupid if it was satire. They may have well just added a laugh track to make it even worse.

If they weren't satire then they were just outright shitty. I'm not mocking the show as a whole. You said every episode. I pointed out one episode that was super bad and you decided to defend it. The series itself is brilliant, but that episode was horrible on every level. I've seen episodes of One Tree Hill that are better than that episode. It sucked, and if the pilot was that episode or the quality of that episode it never would have been picked up as a show.

Yup, The Sopranos can and never will be equaled, there is absolutely no doubt about it. Shallow all you ever do is bring up the Columbus day ep, yeah it definitely was not one of my favorite episode's but whats the big deal about it? And it's only 1 episode, my only complaint ever about Sopranos was in season 6 they had that Vito storyline go on for way to long but even with that 1 complaint, this is still the best series ever and there will never be another series better.

The Vito storyline was another low that the Wire had never reached. Forgot about that one.
Anyway, the point of Columbus Day and Vito was the point I brought up in the beginning; that Sopranos highs may been as good or better than the Wire's, but the lows were much lower. The question wasn't "is Sopranos a great show?", it was "Is it better than the Wire?", and I gave my reasons for The Wire. I'll state them again; The good parts of The Sopranos are just as good as the good parts of The Wire, but he pad parts of the Sopranos are more common and much worse than the bad parts of The Wire. The Wire has it's faults too, and if anyone were to call it flawless I could come back with an essay if I wanted to and make it seem like a bad show, but I'd still call it the best TV has ever seen thus far.

Cant stand Lost personally its like a real life version of Dragon Ball Z IMO.... takes 6 episodes to tell a story sort of thing!!!
Anyways out of these two id pick Sopranos... I watched every single episode and could have kept going and still been good! the wire is good too but not AS good :)
