Best TV-series of all time ? The Wire or The Sopranos ?

I seen a few episodes of the wire..seems cool but nothin' that caught my attention in a major way..same with sopranos..ain't seen a shit load though..

 the Wire even  if the last season is dissapointing but still better than Sopranos last season which has way too many letdowns ... 1st 5 seasons are classic though ... now my favorite (not the best , my favorite)  TV- Series still stays The Shield and the last season is off the hook

I'd pick The Wire because of Season 1,2, and 4.

On a side note, AMC is putting out some quality shows. Breaking Bad started out amazing, and if Mad Men keeps up with how it's been already it may be better than both Wire and Sopranos.

Sopranos easily.  Everyone would agree with me except for dubcc, for some reason dubcc has always had more people picking the Wire but it is universally known that the Sopranos is the best series ever and can never be matched.  Dont get me wrong the Wire is real good but Sopranos is on a whole other level.  It will looked at 40 years from now like The Godfather is looked at now, no show has ever come close to the Sopranos and no show ever will

That's not true.  A lot of critics pick the Wire as the best TV show of all time, the fair thing to say is that they're both on the same level.  The reason I prefer the Wire though is that it has tackled practically every issue involving the workings of an inner city. The themes that it touched simply cannot be summed up by writing about it.  The main character of the Wire is Baltimore.  As a viewer, we were able to see the parallel systems of the police, government and the streets. The inner city school system was nailed, and the stories of the 4 kids were at times heartbreaking.  I'm sure that soon, there will be classes taught in college on TV Shows because they are now getting to the point where they aren't just there to be popcorn entertainment.  They're being seen as literary work now.  One show to look out for is Mad Men, if it continues to be as amazing as Seasons 1 and 2, then we might have new debate going on including three shows.

Only just got through the last series of the wire, all i can say is that as a piece of work all 5 series are a classic.

Im yet to see the sopranos.

Agree with Javii, The Wire gets a LOT of praise in the media and by movie fanatics, it just didn't get the enormous mainstream breakthrough that Sopranos had.

For me it's the Wire because at there worst Wire kills Sopranos. No episode of the Wire comes even close to as bad as the Episode "Christopher" from season 4, about Columbus day. Most of season 4 as a whole was pretty bad. Also, with time the earlier episodes of Sopranos don't seem as impressive as they once did. I don't get that feeling from Godfather. Godfather stands a lot stronger as time goes by.

Of course Sopranos is going to be picked as the best 40 years from now, but that's because it was amazing and popular. I have no doubt that as TV progresses in the new cable era over the next 40 years there will be plenty of shows as good or better than Sopanos, but I'm not sure if any will be anywhere near as popular. It had the right hook to it; an adult show about the mob with a mob boss that sees a shrink. Take away either of those aspects and the show is cancelled with in the first season.

The Sopranos.   no question about it, in my mind.  i can never get tired of watching any episode from any season.  i watch a random episode...say S03E10, then i have to watch 11, 12, 13, then i move onto season 4. lol
