Pedro Martinez(notes) passed his physical in Philadelphia on Tuesday, Yahoo! Sports learned, paving the way for his signing with the Phillies for the season’s second half.
A news conference to announce the signing is expected to be held in Philadelphia on Wednesday. Terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, but it is expected that Martinez is signing for a pro-rated amount of the $5 million he reportedly was seeking in the spring, although some of the money might be tied to incentives.
The 37-year-old Martinez had talked with a number of clubs, including the Rays and Cubs, but the Phillies became aggressive last week, sending special assistant Charley Kerfeld to watch him pitch last Tuesday, and the Phillies watched him again three days later.
Martinez is a three-time Cy Young Award winner who has finished in the top four in voting for the award seven times. After helping the Boston Red Sox win a World Series in 2004, he won 15 games in 2005 in the first year of a four-year, $40 million deal with the New York Mets. But he had shoulder surgery at the end of the 2006 season and won just a total of 17 games in the last three years of the deal, with hamstring and groin injuries sidelining him last season. The death of his father also weighed heavily on him last season, Martinez said.
The Mets made no attempt to re-sign Martinez, who became a free agent after the 2008 season. He pitched for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic and pronounced himself as healthy as he has been in years, but when he sought a guarantee similar to what the Boston Red Sox gave John Smoltz(notes), clubs balked.
Martinez remained in the Dominican Republic working out, and undoubtedly will need two or three rehab starts in the minor leagues before being ready to join the Phillies.
Philadelphia has a four-game lead in the National League East, but the defending World Series champions rank 14th in the league in pitching with a 4.61 ERA. Jamie Moyer(notes) leads the staff with eight wins, but his ERA is 5.99, while ace Cole Hamels(notes) has struggled all season, losing three of his last four decisions.
GM Ruben Amaro has indicated that the Phillies would use Martinez as a starter. Martinez’s signing does not preclude Philadelphia from making a bid for Toronto ace Roy Halladay(notes), who started Tuesday night’s All-Star Game.

As good as Pedro was, he was never given the strike zone Maddux was given. Maddux consistently was given calls 6 inches off either side of the plate. And Pedro's best seasons were during the height of the steroid era, in the AL, in one of the better hitters parks in baseball.

Maddux does not get the credit he deserves for those two seasons. The only thing I can think is he never had stuff that makes you go :o like Pedro or Randy Johnson. Maddux was like wait hold up how did this guy just pitch a complete game 3 hitter on 85 pitches.

In Baseball Magazine October 1913 they have an oustanding article that tries to answer that very same question. At some point I would like to post that article on the site because it is fascinating stuff.
They took measurements of the arm length, arm dimensions, height and weight of all of the top pitchers and tried to make some sense as to why big muscular guys like Jean Duboc were not power pitchers while a lanky, sinewy pitcher like Johnson had tremendous speed.
What they found is that Johnson had a reach of 78 1/2 inches. He had one of the largest arm spans of any of the pitchers that they measured - although a couple like Cy Falkenberg had a reach of 79 1/2 inches. Typically you will find that your average man will have a reach equal to his height. So you would expect that Johnson's reach would be about 73 inches.
What they also found was that Johnson had the longest arms of anyone that they measured - 34 inches. The 6'5" Falkenberg had an arm length of 33 inches. Carl Weilman was over 6'6" and had a wingspan of "only" 75 inches and an arm length of 31 1/2 inches.
Johnson's arm dimensions are as follows: 7 1/8 inch wrist, 12 12/2 inch forearm and 12 1/2 inch biceps.
So you had a man with extraordinary long arms and an arm like a whip. If you watch old movies of him pitch, that's exactly what it looks like.
There are some great pictures in the article. I am going to send them to Bill and maybe he can post them. They show Johnson showing off his reach. His arms look like a whip.

In a Washington Post article in 1929 the writer states that Bill Tilden's serve was timed at 85 MPH by the Bureau of Standards and that Walter Johnson was timed at 113 MPH by the Bureau of Standards. The same article states that a ball was measured at 75 MPH off the bat of Babe Ruth.

Yes wykid is 100 % justified in picking the Dodgers to win the WS. I picked them to make it to the World Series and lose to the BoSox. The thing is the Dodgers have a good all around team. i never said it was weak, but we do need a started that goes deep into games. out of all the starters we have, only bills consistently makes it to the 7th. kershaw is starting to get there, but how much stamina will he have left in october? same goes for belesario and troncoso. this year they will pitch more than they ever have. theres no telling how they will pitch later on this season, let alone in october. so whats wrong with improving out team with an innings eater and/or a good relief pitcher?

Mainly, because nothing is out there. We still have some great arms in the minors that haven't been called up. Standing pat can also be good for the team. You're not calling them weak, but I really am sick and fucking tired of reading, seeing, hearing about that fucking crap everywhere I go. Going deep into ballgames isn't the smartest idea always, even when a pitcher is doing amazing going into the 6th and forward, sometimes the stamina is just gone and their ERA's balloon up sick. And yes, I do have confidence in the bullpen to step in.
