Title: DJ Quik - Under The Influence Sound Quality??
Post by: Eddz on April 21, 2011, 05:27:24 PM
Is anyone else Under The Influence sound muffled or not mixed right? I got the original copy when it was released and always thought the sound quality was bad.

Is it just my copy or was this done on purpose?

I know what you're talking about. It got an analog sound indeed. It sounds like real music. Before the pro tools shit.

sounds much worse sonically compared to his previous albums, so don't blame technology

I'm glad that i'm not the only one, months ago, i find a copy of this album, i'm still buying cd's so i was happy to find this album at a reasonable price, but like you said, at the first seconds something was wrong, Put It On Me is a great example, listen to the one on the Training Day OST and the one on Under Tha Influence it's like the day and the night  :(
So, i thought it was my CD, i found another copy some weeks ago and it's the same thing, the real problem is that the album on mp3 that you can download on iTunes, Amazon, or Megaupload (even in 128kbps) will sound MUCH BETTER than the actual CD... What a shame

Yeah the songs are great but they don't have that crystal clear sound clarity that Rhythm-a-lism did.

And I agree, the version of "Put it On Me" from Training Day sounds sooo much better. Wonder wth that was all about

I'm glad it's not just me. The sound puts me off listening to the album which sucks cause it's a good album

Anyone got a link to the i-tunes version?

i keep reading about this but i can't hear anything wrong with the retai disc at all. we need some of this better downloadable version for comparison. i'd like to hear what the difference is cause there has to be something significant for so many people to be noticing it.

Here is the 2 versions of Put It On Me, first from the Training Day OST, second from the Under Tha Influence, both are CDRip, judge by yourself  ;)

Training Day OST version: https://www.youtube.com/v/5oyiZGWsS2A (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oyiZGWsS2A)

The high end got heavily compressed or cut on the final master, hence why it sounds dull and not crystal clear. There was an advance (it had the original, better version of 50 Wayz on it) that was either unmastered or mastered differently and I personally think it sounds better. I think I have at least some of the tracks from the advance laying around. I'll see if I can find them...

I downloaded this version, it sounds a little bit better but still not perfect.

Quote from Quik about that album:

"I'm switching back from that watered-down, corny sh-- I did with Arista. It wasn't just the whole Roger Troutman thing. Everyone thinks that's what it's about now — you gotta be real clean and linear. [My new album is] recorded in the fashion we used to do. The analog stuff, the old preamps, big microphones. It's a big sound. We're turning big knobs in the studio."

maybe its the reason it sounds like this

That sucks if he did it on purpose, the sound quality is terrible.

thanks man, i can kinda hear what you mean about the high-end, but i'm not so convinced unless we can get the files needed to make a proper comparison.

the one eddz uploaded is terrible quality (thanks for the link tho) 128kbps, sound breaking apart, completely muffled.

and the put it on me on my disc sounds like the better of those two youtube clips, but that's a bad comparison with the youtube compression and unknown source to begin with.

The fact is that Under Tha Influence got a shitty sound on CD, listen to the Put It On Me's youtube link i posted, there is something wrong, the track seems like unfinished and DJ Coma found the problem:

ok...if we're gonna use 'put it on me' for comparison. here is the track ripped straight off my cd @ 320kbps...

http://www.mediafire.com/?rzrv174kh3ah195

does this sound shitty to anyone? and can anyone post a direct rip of a clearer sounding version...off the training day ost or whatever? i got a feeling for whatever reason the UTI mastering could be overly boomy and lacking a bit of highs, but i really want to hear this difference for myself.

put it on me instrumental (off a different disc) http://www.mediafire.com/?vjh3z4l6c1lp22y

this isn't quite as loud, but does sound slightly clearer on the highs. thoughts?

Ok, i understand why you don't hear the problem, cause your tracks seems correct, like the one on the Training Day OST, i thought all Under Tha Influence's CD got the same problem but maybe only few got it, i got this album twice with, so maybe there was 2 pressing, one clear, another one with the shitty sound... Damn

I haven't had a chance to do comparisons yet but I really want to solve this mystery. If there's a pressing with better quality I gotta get that instead! I'll FLAC rip my UTI copy today. One thing I do remember though is that Put It On Me sounded better than most of the other tracks on my copy. I figured this was because they grabbed the mastered version from Training Day and through it on there so it was already done properly.

I think that it's the reason but for real the album is dope and the sound is not really bad. In fact it took me a few years to realise it...

i can rip my one too. i somehow doubt there was two pressings of the cd cause its entirely out of print now, but who knows...

I was listening to the snippets on i-tunes and the quality sounds better. I don't really want to pay for another copy on i-tunes but I will if I can't find it in better quality.

I borrowed my brothers copy so I'll see if there is any difference but I doubt there will be.

Some cd's got a sound problem, don't see the connection with your "Quik went analog with it"
