Title: A closer look at the Above the rim soundtrack
Post by: Cavvy on April 09, 2012, 12:55:02 AM
First of all this was my shit back in the day, I only ever remember disliking the Aaron Hall and Jewell tracks. I actually owned a cassette copy that contained 2 bonus 2pac tracks Loyal to the game and Pain which imo are two of his best, the two Dogg pound tracks were great as well. What are your thoughts on the album?
  1. Anything [Explicit] SWV 4:06
   2. Old Time's Sake [Explicit] Sweet Sable 4:19
   3. Part Time Lover [Explicit] H-Town 4:06
   4. Big Pimpin' [Explicit] Tha Dogg Pound 3:57
   5. Didn't Mean To Turn You On [Explicit] 2nd II None 4:36
   6. Doggie Style [Explicit] D.J. Rogers 4:31
   7. Regulate [Explicit] Nate Dogg & Warren G 4:09
   8. Pour Out A Little Liquor [Explicit] 2pac & Thug Life 3:29
   9. Gonna Give It To Ya [Explicit] Aaron Hall & Jewell 4:51
 10. Afro Puffs [Explicit] The Lady of Rage 4:48
 11. Jus So Ya No [Explicit] Boss Hog & C.P.O. 4:05
 12. Hoochies Need Love Too [Explicit] Paradise 4:40

Pretty good album, just wish there was more rap on there.  No way near as good as the MWTC soundtrack though.

Without doubt the best of the Death Row soundtracks (not including MWTC).

I actually owned a cassette copy that contained 2 bonus 2pac tracks Loyal to the game and Pain which imo are two of his best

Here's the Regulate CD Single that had both those 2Pac tracks from the cassette version of the soundtrack (320kbps w/scans jacked from discogs)

http://limelinx.com/files/310ff3faea64fb27ec52cb6cc5425e6a

1 Regulate (Jamming Mix)
2 Regulate (Radio Version)
3 Pain
4 Loyal To The Game

I'm a huge 90's R&B fan so this soundtrack is one of my favorite DR releases as well... the R&B tracks are so quintessential
of that era. Old Time's Sake, Anything, the DJ Rogers track, the Paradise track...

the DeVanté produced tracks are crazy... Blown Away, Part Time Lover. i was just disappointed by the Jewell/Aaron Hall collabo, corny as fuck (as usual with Jewell, and not surprising coming from Aaron Hall), and I'm a Aaron hall. and I never really liked Afro Puffs main version, i prefer the remix with the Johnny Guitar Watson sample.

and of course the rap tracks, Crack Em, the C.P.O. track, Big Pimpin

i usually bump it in the spring 8)

I agree that the Afro Puffs track is forced/over produced.

Jewell's Its Not Deep Enough borrows from Donald Byrds 'Wind Parade' so I can't help like it for that reason 8) 8) 8)

This was my soundtrack to summer 94, picked it up in may and played it through until september. Nearly every track was a banger but i always skipped Aaron Hall & Jewell & Al b sure tracks. Great memories of school, sunshine, and chasing girls!

its a gret collection of music on its own terms, but it didnt feel like a "Death Row"-soundtrack.

to me,
"gang realted" --> "above the rim"

to me,

true, mostly because of the rnb oriented tracklist and the slew of tracks from artist not related to death row.

I agree, and I've said that in other "best Death Row soundtrack poll" threads... not to take anything away from how good Above the Rim was, especially since the biggest songs on it weren't even really by Death Row artists.  SWV wasn't Death Row, Warren G wasn't officially Death Row, etc.

Big Pimpin & Regulate >>>>>>> any tracks on Gang Related IMO
There's merit to that statement, but they just have very different feels.  Like others have said, a lot of Above the Rim was R&B, plus the rap beats were mostly G-Funk style, so if you like that, then you're going to prefer Above the Rim.  Gang Related was a lot of gangsta rap for the most part, which again some people love here.

To be honest I don't bump either soundtrack from start to finish.

There's 6 to 8 tracks I bump on both, but IMO the best tracks on Above The Rim are better than anything on Gang Ralated.
Just my 2¢..

I can respect that.  I think the hardcore Pac fans will lean toward Gang Related (since the songs people usually point out on that are his, though other stuff like Way Too Major, Greed, These Days and Loc'd Out Hood were dope songs too), and some people who liked Death Row more as a whole with some preference for the original artists (Dre, Snoop, Rage, etc.) who don't really think Pac was as significant as some people make him out to be will like the older shit.

songs i would skip :

Regulate
Pour Out A Little Liquor

I love these songs to death but they're larger than life and it's odd but i don't think they fit in the tracklist, i usually listen to them when i feel like it, or on the Warren G & Thug Life albums

Gonna Give It To Ya
Afro Puffs
It's Not Deep Enough
I'm Still In Love With You

but those 4 Pac songs were Pac at his best..or close enough to it.  starin thru my rearview is a perfect song...i will never get tired of it!

I wouldn't say that Pac's four songs from Gang Related were him at his best or anywhere close to it, outside of Staring Through My Rearview (which is my personal favorite, if you made me pick one song).  None of the other three would be in my top ten Pac songs, whether you ask me which ones are my favorites, which ones I think are Pac's best or most important/greatest/whatever.  Life's So Hard is cool, but again, it's a re-visited song originally from years earlier in Pac's career.  Made Niggaz is hard (especially Pac's first verse), but it pales in comparison to his other diss tracks.  Lost Souls is probably the next best song of the four after Staring, but it's nothing special, lyrically or musically.

Actually that's true, I never really listened to Regulate on that actual cassette, because it was getting major play from me on the actual Warren G album so it seemed a bit redundant on the soundtrack...

Just an fyi for collectors out there, that regualte jamming cd single has pain and loyal to the game, but they are so quiet...

The cd single, 'more music from above the rim' has these 2 tracks as they should be in crystal clear audio....

the regualte song also sucks on that jammin cd single.  dont get me wrong, great item to have, but kinda sucks the sounds wasn't loud.

even the promo cd for regulate sounds way better...

as a 2pac fan, do yourself a favor and hear the 2 songs the way they were meant to be heard, go bump the more music form atr single.....

Interesting to hear how many of ya'll were fans of the R&B tracks on the album.  Because I was just bumping this album today actually, and I still have to skip over most the tracks on the album.  But the bangers are all certified Classic Death Row bangers; that I used to play non-stop back in the day.  It was this type of shit that first got me hooked on hiphop.  The Classic songs were...

3.  H-Town-  "Part Time Lover"
4.  Dogg Pound- "Big Pimpin" -  this was my first time hearing Snoop on a track such as this.  I was a kid and didn't know how to take it at first.  I thought it was soft, I was used to hearing him on hard shit like The Chronic and Doggystyle.  I thought maybe he was rich and didn't want to rap hard anymore, lol.   But soon I caught on and bumped the hell out of this track all summer long in 94
7.  Nate Dogg and Warren G-  "Regulators"-  Goes without saying
8.  2pac-  "Pour Out Some Liquor"-  Just another great Pac record.
10.  Rage-  "Afro Puffs" -  People forget what a great job Dre did producing this song.  Snoop also did his part, and this track was hard as fuck but yet had great crossover appeal.  I even remember rich suburban girls being into it.

..."Dogg Pound 4 Life" sounded great when it was Live on the Show documentary.  But this version didn't ever sound right to me.
