Title: Anybody know what became of the Tray Dee solo project on Def Jam 97/98?
Post by: TraceOneInfinite on September 03, 2012, 08:37:13 PM
Remember this was when Def Jam was signing a lot of our favorite West Coast artists.  They had Warren G, Twinz, Dove Shack, Jayo Felony.  Some of you all may have forgotten but they also had Tray Dee.   Tray Dee had a couple singles he recorded for Def Jam that ended up on soundtracks.  Both were certified bangers.  "Droppin Bombz" off of the classic Show soundtrack and then also "Way Too Crazy" that I think was on the Rush Hour soundtrack and produced by Daz.

With those two bangers he was definitely on his way to recorded a bangin' solo album, he was in his prime then and still had close ties with all the key players out West.  With the Def Jam machine behind him it's too bad this album never came out while Jayo Felony's album did (probably because of the success of "What You Gonna Do With It".

Anyway, I never heard what became of this project, just curious if anybody heard anything.

I would hope this would come out 1 day.  sometimes it "always" seems that the cream of the crop with good rappers (and producers) never get around to releasing their earlier material.  Whatever is left of it should come out even if it was half-assed *no wideawake*

Tray Deee was never signed to Def Jam. He was signed to Sony Music. I think Big C Style got him the deal.

I'll check my liner notes to the Show soundtrack again, but I thought it said he was signed to Def Jam.  Maybe it was Sony.. my bad

He was going to release an album on epic back in 1998, but it never came out. I remember hearing from some tray deee interview somewhere ages ago that epic cancelled the album, because they thought he couldnt sell enough numbers without snoop

sadly i don't blame them but they coulda easily released it with little expectations and just limited the amount of copies printed to like 10 thousand

promotion, distribution, networkin....all that shit cost money. they probably thought they'd lose money on a tray deee album. and i wont lie, he wasnt exactly marketable. but that was the golden era of west-coast hip-hop, anything snoop affiliated coulda dropped and went AT LEAST gold. i guess it was a risk they weren't willin 2 take.

can't see any tray deee album reaching gold status in 98 though, considering even a semi-household name such as Kurupt struggled to do so (i don't even know if he did).

all these peeps should have gone independent just like nate did. they would have recouped their money and satisfied the fans.

1) according to the RIAA website, neither Kurupt nor Doggy's Angels went Gold. http://riaa.com/goldandplatinumdata.php?content_selector=gold-platinum-searchable-database

2) they had the "dogg" attached to it, just like for the eastsidaz, it helps sell (not enough to warrant them a gold selling album apparently though)

3) it was in the wake of Chronic 2001, which was a good time to be affiliated to Snoop or Dre whatsoever (DPG even sold 200k independently lol)

"The album is reported to have went gold, in comparison to the majority of the albums he appeared on for Death Row in the mid-90's going multi-platinum and receiving critical acclaim."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuruption!

ive read some places that doggy's angels went gold, as well....either way, im not saying tray deee would for sure go gold, but if they dropped it in 97 with the proper promotion, there was a chance.

There's no way Doggys Angels went gold.  I was a Snoop fanatic when that shit came out and I didn't even bump it more than once.

I don't know if Tray Dee could've gone gold cause he's got a quote "marketing problem".  This happens with a lot of talented rap artists.  Even Eminem had a "marketing problem" that kind of delayed the release of the slim shady lp.  Until they came up with the blonde dye and the rest is history.  But if you see some of Em's old interviews when he still had dark hair or watch the "Just Don't Give A Fuck" video you can see that that it was questionable whether or not Eminem would ever be accepted by the mainstream.

Tray Dee was always too old and didn't have the Hollywood looks.   But I don't doubt that he would of came with a bangin solo album in 97'98' that could of given him legendary cred on the West and underground.  Something like what Xzibit had before "Bitch Please".

that doggys angel album actually wasnt bad...had nice beats and dope features from the doggystyle records clique. big chan had flows, as well. as for whether it was successful or not, "baby if you're ready" reached #1 on the hot rap singles, which is considered successful for an independent female rap group. either way, i think tray deee woulda done even better than they did.

doggy's angels albums was excellent, not as good as the first eastsidaz album, but up there as well. it had that early dogghouse sound with a kind of melancholic twist sometimes. "keep ya head up" was my shit, i love how kokane flipped that old school alexander o'neal.

baby if you're ready was a smash single indeed.
