very true.  i think shock g was a bad leader when it came to promotion.  he turned down tons of commercials that would have made DU a lot more popular...money b said it pissed him off when shock turned down a Sprite ad without telling the rest of the group

A lot of people from that era were underrated and unappreciated though, but they haven't made any noise in damn near 20 years.  They dropped an album here and there but it was nothing really on the scale of their past efforts  But they got to be in a motion picture... no matter how bad Nothing But Trouble was, it's not like a lot of mainstream movie companies or directors were reaching out to hip-hop acts at that time anyway to do any music for the soundtrack, let alone appear in the movie.

why did he turned the commercials down?

Have to admit back in the day i wasn't over big on Digital underground but i did later buy a couple of their albums and i do own Shock-g's solo album(fear of a mixed planet0 and its a really good album!
I also saw them live a few years back. They rocked it!

Real talk...I'll flat out say Shock G was a genius. They have some classics but never got the props they deserve.

I'll saw Shock in concert at a hole in the wall about 10 years ago. Hella prolific on the keys, did a great Pac tribute as well.

i went to kdays krush groove a couple years back and shock g was by far the best performer...and this was in a house fulla west coast legends- the line-up was ridiculous. alla that and he stood out as top dog, straight up. i grew up on digital underground, my pops bought "sex packets" when it first came out and i still slap that same copy.. sounds just as fresh as when i first heard it.

I always thought "Aregeno Flow" was an under-rated single from DU.  But, I have to admit I've actually never listened to one DU track that wasn't a single, lol

...wait, I take that back, I actually have the 96 album with "Aregano Flow" and I think I checked out some of the other tracks and wasn't feelin it.

DU was out of the spotlight when the West Coast really blew up in 93-94. That contributes to why they're underrated. I don't think they're unappreciated though.

thats not really true, digital underground were touring world wide a lot off the success of their own gold albums and their appearance on pacs i get around kept them buzzin for a while and then shock g went on to co produce me against the world.

it seemed like when pac cut his affiliation w DU and the westcoast shifted its whole attention to gangster shit was when alot of the more light hearted non violent groups and shit started to kind of fade off.

heiro and them, del, freestlye fellow ship, pharcyde etc. they all had a lane once everything shifted to a costal situation it seems like they got lost in the shuffle. west coast band signed to east coast label etc.

then coupled with shock gs substance abuse issues...

i still feel like out of all the artists that experimented with g funk i feel shock g and digital underground were probably the best representation of the spirit of p funk.

shock combined more jazz elements into the music, so though there was a lot of funk, it was never the primary focus- more of an eclectic thing with digital underground, if anything. i'd say they were probably the best representation of all music elements combined into rap. jazz, blues, funk, even rock.....but the best representation of straight funk has to go to dre or hutch, since that was their focus in their heyday.

im sorry famo thats not true. if you heard sex packets i figured youd be hip to this album...its whole theme was them being passed the torch from members of parliament funkadelic

this was one of the first rap groups to be recognized by george clinton before the g funk thing was in effect or dre was admitting to smoking reefer and on his obsession with pfunk. sex packets came out in like 89 and it had a strong presence of pfunk influence (underwater funk etc) shock didnt get real jazzy with it till his later works

but they did incorperate a little bit of everything thats what i loved. sex packets had fuckadelic samples and prince samples and jimi hendrix samples etc.

yea thats a great album...but what im sayin is that their focus was incorporating all musics into rap, not just funk ala dre and hutch, so u cant really give em the crown for that

and sex packets was actually a very jazzy album, brobro

it is jazzy but i think while you might have embraced what hutch and them were doing the originators of the movement were embracing digital underground. like "yall are the chosen ones" most casual dr dre fans still dont who the fuck ATL is sadly and recognize the chronic the emergence  of that genre. what im saying was digital underground were the first ones to do it and pay homage correctly, doing shit like having clinton on their albums rather then stealing a 8 sec sample and not properly crediting etc. they actually were trying to further the p funk as a genre

george clinton and them didnt give a good goddamn about gfunk till they started cashin g checks.

Actually george has gone on record to say he loved what dre n em was doin... But I get what u sayin, digital underground worked closer to george at first.

I went to see E-40 back in 2005 and he was opening for Digital Underground. E-40's performance kinda sucked but Digital Underground blew me away. Shock was playing live keyboards and all that. I definitely wanna see them live again before I die.

very true.  i think shock g was a bad leader when it came to promotion.  he turned down tons of commercials that would have made DU a lot more popular...money b said it pissed him off when shock turned down a Sprite ad without telling the rest of the group

Seems like a good move. Don't support the machine.
