Seems like keeping him as the highest paid player is over-the-top for a guy as old he is/considering where the rest of the team is talent-wise. Of course he'll keep making them money, but in terms of the on court product it seems like this doesn't give them nearly as much cap flexibility as they could have to bring in other stars. You know the team's cap situation better than me obviously, but if I'm a fan I'm wishing they would've settled for less.

I had just read about this on cnnsi.com maybe 10 minutes ago.  Sure, it doesn't leave a lot of room, but at least the extension is for a slightly less amount than what he was making.  It's not a lot less, but it should give up a little more wiggle room to sign some more talent.  It gives them more to work with than if they had just given him another $30 million per year.

Nice show of loyalty by Kobe and the Lakers.   It's also great for the city.   We had a hall of famer, George Brett, who played his whole career in Kansas City, won an MVP, a championship, and still does a lot for the city and organization even today.  It's something you don't see often enough, especially now, but I think it's great for sports, in general.

YUP...LOYALTY IS THE KEY WORD. GOOD TO SEE IN A DAY IN AGE WHERE PLAYERS ARE QUICK TO JUMP SHIP AND TURN THEIR BACKS ON THEIR TEAMS/CITY. KOBE IS OLD SCHOOL IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD.

KOBE IS STILL HANDS DOWN A TOP-TIER, ELITE LEVEL PLAYER... WHEN HE WENT DOWN LAST YEAR, HE WAS PLAYIN BETTER THAN ANY1 IN THE LEAGUE...

AS FAR AS CAP FLEXIBILITY, WE STILL HAVE THE CAP-SPACE TO SIGN ONE MORE MAX-CONTRACT PLAYER, HENCE WHY I SAID "MELO COMIN NEXT"...KOBE DEFINITELY DESERVES WHAT HE GOT AND WE'RE STILL GOING TO KEEP BUILDIN ON IT- WE GOOD 8)

Hope the contract has something in it where Kobe actually has to play and that money isn't guaranteed.  Because at his age his mind may be way ahead of his body and his body won't hold up enough to avoid injury, he also may retire early.

Loyalty can be very counter-productive in pro sports though. With a guy like Kobe who was playing at a high level when he went down it's one thing, but "loyalty" isn't really something you can put a blanket over if you're running an organization.

I'm in an out of market city.  We haven't had a team here since the Kansas City Kings and KC Jones.  It's all football here right now.  After the football season concludes then I will start checking out the NBA and by the time the playoffs roll around I should be up to speed.

According to Kobe, he didn't even negotiate a contract. The Lakers made him an offer and he accepted it. It seems only prudent to wait until he actually starts playing again before even thinking about contract extensions.

No you see, Kobe laid his hands on his Achilles and it was healed by the power of Laker faith.  He was seen massaging Pau's groin however I do not hear about Pau having a groin injury.

This is loyalty and it shows the Lakers are still the same family ran team that has made them great. Other teams would dump their ageing talent, but this is a great move for the Lakers. I might have tried to go a little less, but the end result is still the same. Next year the Lakers have enough for one max contract, and I still say trade that aging talent for draft picks. The lottery picks are deep this year, once the year is over wheel and deal and try to get in. But for now, pay Kobe, try to get a decent seed and make a run. The Lakers are .500 with Kobe on the bench, so a good playoff run is not out of the question. Nothing but good. What I'm happy about is Kobe is not rushing. I thought he'd comeback too soon and then end his career on an injury. But he's taking his time and letting the rest of the team do their job well he recovers. This is a good sign and when he is ready, it's time. Unlike D.Rose or other players, Kobe has nothing to prove, just comeback when ready and lead this team to victory. If the Lakers stay at or just above .500 until then, that's a very good sign.

Dwight was supposed to make room for two stars. Now you MAY get one.

God willing Kobe doesn't go down with injury again.

btw. it's 5.4 assists...still lower than kobe

I'm not going to argue about .4 assists a game.  Let's go back to the original argument, the Lakers are fucking stupid to hand out that much money to Kobe without him playing a minute this year.  They bid against themselves and are morons.  It's quite obvious this Laker ownership has changed for the worse and the rest of the league is laughing.  Enjoy your broken idol as he tries to come back from a devastating leg injury in his late 30's.  Kobe is an old man in NBA dog years and luckily for him the Lakers needed him since no active superstar will want to play for them.

The end.

.6 a game, but ur the one who brought up kobe bein a ball-hog when harden is ur "franchise player", not me....but yea, what lakers are doing is showing loyalty to kobe, who would definitely be able to get a max contract elsewhere if the lakers chose not to sign him. but thats not the point...fact remains, kobe has shown no signs of decline and will still make the franchise its money back x10, which makes it a smart move even if he only plays at 50% of what he did last season...it's kobe bryant. perhaps the biggest draw in the league, even at 35. ur out of ur mind for tryna diss this move when yall just gave dwight howard max money lmao

as for no other superstars wanting to play for the lakers..if ur talking about dwight, rofl@him being a superstar. the minnesota broadcast team ranked roy hibbert above him last night. it's finally catching on.

As someone who didn't agree with the contract, it's a huge stretch to act like he's conclusively done being a big-time player. It's easy to forget, but dude was dunking over guys like he was in his 20's last year. The guy is an absolute freak and doesn't give a fuck about anyone/anything but basketball. If anyone can make the comeback it's him.

there's always a few exceptions like  brett favre having his best statistical season at QB by far at age 40/41

but Kobe is already crippled right now, he's not going to be worth the money on the court.   maybe selling jerseys and all that shit.

It's just the simple principal Kobe had the option of getting two really good free agents or load up for retirement and only get one max player.

You can sit here and slice it and dice it about whether he's worth it or can win without the second player or whether he'll live up to the contract or be healthy for it....bottom line is that he was selfish.

No one could compete with the Lakers. I mean the Knicks would have more money, and they'd end up signing Vince Carter and getting Pierce and Garnett for max deals. The Lakers would still spend on Kobe, and then find all these pieces to put around him and no one would be able to compete dollar for dollar.

From what i'm hearing the Lakers have enough money for one max contract.  I'd assume this is correct since Kobe and Gasol make so much money.  Now obviously Bosh is not a max player unless the team signing him is desperate as hell but still we know Lebron is smart enough to not want to play with selfish Kobe and Carmelo playing with Kobe is pretty pointless since neither pass the ball.

Basically the Lakers will not be competing with the Thunder, Spurs, Warriors, Clippers or Rockets the next 2 years so they might as well give Kobe a fat paycheck and start a retirement parade tour over the next few years.

eastern conference got shit on lock anyway, Miami and Indy are the 2 best teams in the league.

Basically the Lakers will not be competing with the Thunder, Spurs, Warriors, Clippers or Rockets the next 2 years so they might as well give Kobe a fat paycheck and start a retirement parade tour over the next few years.

eastern conference got shit on lock anyway, Miami and Indy are the 2 best teams in the league.

kobe doesnt pass the ball, yet he averaged 6 assists last season, more than most point guards..

im pretty sure u really watch basketball

lakers already beat warriors, clippers, rockets witout kobe lmao...came close to beating spurs, as well.

fall back

You can get the Lakers 100-1 right now to win it all. 45-1 for the Conference.

That's good value for someone who believes Kobe will come back and play out of his mind.

not sayin we'll win it all, but if the odds are really on 100-1 right now, then i'd take that bet.

The time/value of 100-200 dollar play from now until the playoffs comes out to less than a dollar a day.

I'd strike before Kobe comes back with a vengeance, goes on a 13 game winning streak and Vegas makes them 20-1.
