i bet Doggystyle and the Chronic are both are at least 5 mill if not 7-8 ish
-
In () u got sales. Chronic should be 5x Platinum and Doggystyle 6x.
-

I was always impressed that the Dogg Food album sold 2X. That was really a testament to the popularity of Snoop and Death Row at the time, because the album really offered very little for women, and casual pop music fans.

LETS PLAY HOUSE WAS PRETTY COMMERCIAL
-
Dogg Food was released in October 95' and after 3 months in January they reached 2x Platinum. I'm sure they sold somethin like 3,3k.
-
How the fuck did MC Ren go platinum?
-
yeah death row's sound was pretty polished. it actually appealed to a lot of r&b listeners who were otherwise not fucking with rap because of the melodic appeal and the fact that they used session musicians. if you browse the comment sections on youtube of a lot of death row / g-funk songs you'll get a lot of this. I remember Mary J. Blidge being interviewed and basically saying how she admired Dre for putting a p-funk twist on rap. and Death Row's R&B roster was also a testament to that.
for Dogg Food, the singles sound smooth as can be : New York New York and Let's Play House. other songs such as I Don't Like to Dream about Getting Paid, Riding, Slipping & Sliding, Smooth were also smooth. I think Dogg Food is the perfect blend between a G-Funk and a more rugged sound, with basic gangsta bragadoccio and also straight emceeism. even rugged / hardcore songs like Respect / Cyco Lic No / Some Bomb Azz Pussy have a strong melodic structure.
but yeah I was always amazed that Dogg Food was able to go double plat, I know it was backed by the Death Row machine, but with the Time Warner Controversy, and the fact that both Kurupt and Daz were not as charismatic as Snoop and Dre, it's a trip that they pushed 2 mil even though at that time it was easier than today.
I think MC Ren went platinum off the strength of NWA and Ruthless Records. Almost Everything they touched at that time went either platinum or gold.

And it was same year album got released.

i dont think it's surprising at all....dogg pound was viewed as snoop's group, and death row was the top label in rap at the time. id be more surprised if they didnt sell...even eastsidaz went platinum.

Notice, I said impressed not surprised. I was impressed that Dogg Food went double platinum. Because they were able to come hard as fucc on a record, with very little pop appeal, and they still went double platinum. And like Bouli pointed out they lacked the charisma of a Snoop or Eazy E.
Now, was I surprised, no. For the reasons you mentioned. Dogg Food did what it was expected to do, Snoop and Death Row were in their prime and it was a great album, so it did what it was supposed to do. But still I am impressed. Feel me.
...and as for "Let's Play House" being commercial, it wasn't really that commercial. I also don't remember it getting that much play on TV and Radio. Just because an R&B bitch is singing on the hook doesn't make it pop and commercial, Michelle' is not exactly Brandy...
-
but like bouli said, it was a very musical album, so it did have pop appeal in that sense ...... let's play house was playin all over the radios in LA, and the video got its share of play on mtv and bet as well.
-
where are all of Daz's solo efforts?
-
I wouldn't be surprised if RRGB went gold ;) I remeber Snoop did interview in time that he was beefing wit Daz (1998/1999) and journalist said that Daz went gold. Snoop responsed that he sold only 350k (max one year after release). So maybe now he has gold.

It was an interview Snoop done with DubCNN and it was made in 2006 - not 1998. He was just recalling those moments for the interviewer. Death Row didn't updated those numbers since late 90's so I highly doubt these are actual numbers, they are probably much bigger right now.

Anyone knows how well Against tha grain was sellin? Somethin around 100k? Or less?
