Yep, I think that Dogg Food and Murder Was the Case are 3x Platinum right now.

I was always impressed that the Dogg Food album sold 2X.  That was really a testament to the popularity of Snoop and Death Row at the time, because the album really offered very little for women, and casual pop music fans.

Dogg Food was released in October 95' and after 3 months in January they reached 2x Platinum. I'm sure they sold somethin like 3,3k.

yeah death row's sound was pretty polished. it actually appealed to a lot of r&b listeners who were otherwise not fucking with rap because of the melodic appeal and the fact that they used session musicians. if you browse the comment sections on youtube of a lot of death row / g-funk songs you'll get a lot of this. I remember Mary J. Blidge being interviewed and basically saying how she admired Dre for putting a p-funk twist on rap. and Death Row's R&B roster was also a testament to that.

for Dogg Food, the singles sound smooth as can be : New York New York and Let's Play House. other songs such as I Don't Like to Dream about Getting Paid, Riding, Slipping & Sliding, Smooth were also smooth. I think Dogg Food is the perfect blend between a G-Funk and a more rugged sound, with basic gangsta bragadoccio and also straight emceeism. even rugged / hardcore songs like Respect / Cyco Lic No / Some Bomb Azz Pussy have a strong melodic structure.

but yeah I was always amazed that Dogg Food was able to go double plat, I know it was backed by the Death Row machine, but with the Time Warner Controversy, and the fact that both Kurupt and Daz were not as charismatic as Snoop and Dre, it's a trip that they pushed 2 mil even though at that time it was easier than today.

I think MC Ren went platinum off the strength of NWA and Ruthless Records. Almost Everything they touched at that time went either platinum or gold.
