Dr. Dre, the legendary hip-hop producer and performer, sees AI as another tool in the music-tech toolbox akin to synthesizers — and asserted that only people "who have trouble creating" are afraid of AI.
Dre, founder of the Aftermath record label and co-founder and CEO of Apple's Beats, said that he doesn't see AI "as a threat," in an interview alongside his longtime business partner Jimmy Iovine, which was published Sunday by the New York Times. "I think the only people that see it as a threat are the people who have trouble creating."
"I had a discussion with a few people a few days ago," Dre said. "They were against AI and I'm like, ‘OK, you sound like the person that would have been against the drum machine when it came out.' Or synthesizers, right? It's a new tool for creativity. Some people are afraid of learning new things."
Dre said he's using AI tech in music "as a tool to see what it would do with what I just did." Iovine added, "So is Timbaland — another brilliant producer. By the way, there's a lot of closet AI producers out there."
Asked what he most recently asked an AI chatbot, Dre said his query was, "How do you put on muscle and lose fat at the same time? That's it."
Dre, 61, was named to Forbes' 2026 Billionaires list, joining the publication's rankings for the first time, with an estimated net worth of $1 billion. In 2014, he and Iovine sold Beats by Dre to Apple in a deal worth more than $3 billion. Dre in 2023 sold a collection of music income streams and other assets to Shamrock Holdings and Universal Music Group for more than $200 million.

In the music industry, AI remains controversial and the subject of ongoing legal disputes. For example, last week indie music publisher Round Hill Music sued Suno and Anthropic, accusing the two AI companies of copyright infringement by illegally scraping hundreds of its songs to train their models without permission. Suno has been sued by all three of the major labels — Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group and Sony Music — though it settled with WMG last year. In addition, Suno recently struck a licensing agreement with BMG (which sued Anthropic this year for allegedly using its recordings to train AI models in what it called a scheme of "widespread and systematic infringement").
Meanwhile, Apple Music said it will begin labeling songs derived from AI platforms later this year, following Spotify's decision to label the profiles of artists that appear to be AI-generated as "AI Personas." Last month, a coalition including the RIAA, IFPI, the Grammys and SAG-AFTRA united to advocate for a new industry labeling program for AI-produced songs similar to labels flagging explicit content.

I thought it was a known fact that he used AI on tgat Tom Petty track
-
Yew, same shit Scorcese and George Lucas recently said about A.I. and movies, just another tool.
Expect on future credits -
Produced by Dr Dre, co-produced by A.I. 'insert company name here'.
I.C.U should be worried, mass firings upcoming.
-
if he replaces some of his recent musicians with AI that actually wouldn't be the worst thing lol
-
Damn lol
-
He's exactly right. AI been replacing sounds in music for years. Voices were the last sound needed for AI to replace. Unless you're using a live band on every track, you've already been using AI.

there's a difference between plug-ins and AI

In a new interview with The New York Times alongside his longtime business partner Jimmy Iovine, Dr. Dre called AI a "new tool for creativity" and said he doesn't see it "as a threat."
Dre also acknowledged that he is using AI in his own music, explaining that he views the technology "as a tool to see what it would do with what I just did."
Interestingly enough, this is the exact opposite of what legendary Dj Quik had to say about the usage of AI in music.
"It's a total violation of culture. It's appropriation. You can't recreate somebody that's still here doing what they do.
Don't use my stuff because I know that computer is not gonna have my nuances. I watch AI programs on YouTube and they mispronounce words. It ain't human.
I'd rather have bad human material than good AI material. How bout that"
Hmmm, was Missionary Dre's first A.I. 'assisted' album?
Do artists/albums/songs/stream sites...even have to reveal or credit A.I. was used on what parts, voices, full songs etc...?
Sucks if they dont.
Dre also acknowledged that he is using AI in his own music, explaining that he views the technology "as a tool to see what it would do with what I just did."
Dre will play around with the toy and get 1000s of versions and still be like nah i aint releasing shit.

It's semantics at this point, but the concept is still valid. You're using a computer program to replicate a sound that would normally be produced and created by a human. Now granted, AI isn't building the whole concept and idea of a song from scratch, but telling a computer to replicate a sound exactly how you want it with no chance of human error or variance is most definitely a form of AI.

Appreciate the constructive discussion, but we can agree to disagree on this. You showing me an AI generated caption explaining AI isn't going to change the basic crux of my argument.

Maybe AI Dr. Dre can make better beats than current Dr. Dre lol

simple definition
you don't know what artificial intelligence is and that's ok
a drum machine is not AI because the machine has no intelligence of its own
your like of thinking is more like a drum machine than it is like AI
-
I thought it was a known fact that he used AI on tgat Tom Petty track
I think it was used to extract Tom Petty's vocals from the preexisting recording, but it was still a Tom Petty performance. To me that's different than having AI recreate his vocals from scratch, or changing another person's performance so that it sounds like Tom Petty.

Come on, i don't have you that wrecked do I? You're putting way too much effort into this looking up definitions and scrambling to find AI assisted discussion points. You obviously are confused, which is fine. AI doesn't have intelligence of its own either, that's why it's called ‘artificial' intelligence. It's all coded and trained. You've interacted with AI plenty over the years, you just haven't realized it. The younger generation, like yourself, doesn't know the difference, you don't know any better.

relax grandpa ... AI gets coded and then thinks on its own, creating its own patterns, rhythms, lyrics etc.
that's the difference between AI and a drum machine
i get it, you're at the age where it's hard for you to unlock your phone screen, let alone understand what AI is
but we're here to explain it to you

There you're getting it now. AI is coded and uses that coding. It doesn't think on its own. I'm glad i taught you something today. Nothing wrong with correcting yourself.

no worries .. as long as you understand that you sound about 95 years old saying drum machines are the same as AI then we're good

When is Dre gonna drop another classic Beat?
-
I thought Snoop's verse on The Game's new album seemed a bit off like it could have been AI ???
-

I doubt it, Dre sampled the actual song by Tom Petty.

I think it was just the way the sample was flipped.. I doubt that Game would utilise AI when he can reach out to Snoop..

I wouldn't spend so much time worrying about my opinion or understanding. Being one of the OGs here, i get that it's very important to you to have my agreement or blessing when you make statements. And while i do appreciate the dialog, i'm one of hundreds of members here you could be fervently having interactions with. I'm going to take myself down a notch in your eyes, I'm not all that, just a regular rap fan who enjoys the culture and music. You don't need to spend so much time convincing me that you are right, or convincing me that i have to like all your music and projects, etc. I'm just a regular guy like everyone else here.

who said anything about my music or projects? now we see where the underlying passive aggressiveness truly stems from. this has nothing to do wit AI for u.

I'm curious to find out what you think this discussion has to do with other than a discussion on AI and the thought process behind it, other than paranoia on your end. I feel like we've always had a good respectful open dialogue, whether we agree or disagree on things. If you are getting a passive aggressive vibe by reading my posts, I can assure you it's all in your head. I look at you as a colleague and interesting person to discuss the culture with, but i certainly don't want you to feel negatively from our interactions. If you are feeling some sort of consternation from my replies to your posts, then don't reply anymore. Life really is that simple, no need to stress over things like this, this is supposed to be fun :).

i don't mind a little passive aggression from time to time .. i know u mean well
trolling can be a form of passive aggression and obviously you're one of the bigger trolls on this forum
it's entertaining .. no love lost
