Soopafly - Like It or Not
South Central Cartel - You Gotta Deal Wit It (Gangsta Luv) (commercially)
2nd II None - *sings because he forgot the name* If you want it, then I've got it/ if you need it oh baby I feed it/ if you love it, come and rub it/ (again, just commercially)

Slow Pain - Money Maid (Fallin' In Love)
JV - Nay'bahood Queen
Mellow Man Ace - Mentirosa

SCC? one hit wonders? dudes have classic albums. I don't think they ever were commercial. Not even close to a one hit wonder.
-
Being one hit wonders does not mean that they were weak, commercial or just stopped making great music after their hit.
Snow's first album was a great hit, but I can tell ya it's his weakest album and he's got a classic dancehall album in "Murder love" and a lot of heat and dope rhythms in all his records.
I loved Skee-lo, his flow was fucking dope. What's sad is that if he had rapped about gang life, with lots of cursing, he'd be still around and making hits on the west. He's like an westcoast Twista.
Most of the times it's the labels that make artists one-hit-wonders. Most keep coming with heat, but labels fail to promote them right, or don't feel it's gonna be as big as the first hit and fuck their careers.
-
queen pen - all my love
-
DRS-gangsta lean
-
Sugarhill Gang, as much props as they do definitely deserve, i wouldn't know about any real success except for that one song we all know
Luniz, commercially and to non-west coast fans, of course the Operation Stackola album was dope and yuk himself has done tons of nice songs, but to the average rap listener "I Got 5 On It" is the only song he really knows
Loon was kind of a one hit wonder
that's what i can think of rite now, i guess in hiphop there ain't too many of them

mc hammer - cant touch this
btw. i found something interesting about him in the internet:
Hammer time" was over by 1996, when $13.7 million in the red, he declared bankruptcy. After breaking his leg in 1996 and the murder of friend Tupac Shakur, Hammer experienced somewhat of an epiphany and went back to being "a man of God" (Hammer grew up in a religious envronment and was no stranger to spiritual endevours).
Hammer is now an evangilist, his shows now consist of prayer, preaching and gospel singing. He lives in a four-bedroom home in Northern California with his wife and 4 children.
Update: March/04: Reader HiRoll3r reports to us "Just an update. I was invited to a party in the SF Bay Area a few weeks ago. Turns out it was a party for the release of his new album and video(perhaps single) Full Blast. So it looks like Hammer's getting out of the preaching game and back into music. Til his backers figure out that this will not be a lucrative venture."
are all black rappers big friends with each other or is that just the way ppl from the pop-bussiness see it?
or were they really "friends"? cause i never heard anything like that before,
hammer was on death row for a few months... yeah, b/c of beeing a friend to tupac or became he a "friend" of tupac after signing the label?
hmmmmm ???

J-Kwon - "Tipsy"
Bonecrusher - "Never Scared"
Joe Budden - "Pump it Up"
-
A+ - Enjoy Yourself
hehe i bought that... and the album hempstead high
-
Man, MC Hammer was far from a 1-hit wonder. He had all kinds of hits. He even had hits on diff. albums, remember "Pumps and a Bump"
-
nope :D
i remember you can't touch this... then jokes about him wasting it all..
another one..
shade shiest - where i wanna be..
and thats mostly because of nate dogg...
-
I remember "Pumps and a bump". Say what you say, but "The funky headhunter" was a very dope album.
-
yea, i also like that album
but the world will only remeber him for that gay song "cant touch this"
and thats what the topic is all about, from my point of view..
he had "1 hit" - 99% of all folks listening to pop music, even listening to rap, will answer "cant touch this" if you ask them what songs do you know by mc hammer... ::)

Yeah, sad cause he got some dope songs. "Straight to my feet" is funky as can motherfuckin be. The whole "The funky headhunter" is dope. Sure you can say he was playing gangsta rapper in that album but... I give a damn, the music is nice and that's what matters to me.
-
TQ - Westside (his only solo hit in the U.S., in Europe I heard Bye Bye Baby was huge)
Bye Bye Baby, Daily, and Keep It On The Low also got a significant amount of radio play in the US, and his new album should get some more attention.
-
Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby
-
Sugarhill Gang, as much props as they do definitely deserve, i wouldn't know about any real success except for that one song we all know
They had other fairly big songs, not as big as Rapper's Delight but still. Apache was huge in the 80s.
-

Yep... that album has the only released Hammer / Tha Row collaboration on I believe - 'Masterplan' with Kurupt and Daz on it - dope track
-
J-Kwon - "Tipsy"
nope, Hood Hop his new single is blowing up..
-
J-Kwon - "Tipsy"
nope, Hood Hop his new single is blowing up..
I find that hard to beleive.
-
shade shiest - where i wanna be..
and thats mostly because of nate dogg...
that other song "Wake Up" was big, I remember everybody singin that
-
Kriss Kross - Jump
Domino - Here We Go
Souls of Mischief - 93 Til Ininity
Yo Yo - Can't Play With My Yo Yo (if you even consider that one a hit)
Da Lench Mob - Guerillas in the Mist
Mack 10 - Foe Life (yeah, I said it... what?!?)
Deion Sanders - Must Be The Money
-
mc hammer - cant touch this
no. "dancin' machine" was also a hit, as was "pray". was "here comes the hammer" a single? the radio was playing that whole album it seemed. dude had atleast 3 hits off that one album. "2 legit 2 quit" was also a big hit on his next album. dude was doing title tracks for movies and such. that addam's family shit? c'mon. dude was not a one hit wonder.
shit, i was listening to hammer's shit yesterday, and reminiscing on an argument i had with my boy khary that "dancin' machine" was a better song than "u can't touch this".
"pumps & a bump" and that "the funky headhunter" album dropped when he was starting to fizzle, but it still got some play as da illest has pointed out.
-
hmmm, well i speak for europe,
maybe in the US it was something else... ::)
-
Actually Domino had two hits Ghetto Jam and Sweet Potato Pie.
Paperboy had one hit with Ditty.
-
hmmm, well i speak for europe,

nah, i'm quite sure dance machine was a hit over here too
-
J-Kwon - "Tipsy"
nope, Hood Hop his new single is blowing up..
aND THE SONG yOU & ME WILL BLOW UP TOO
-

In the early 90's 1991-92, You Gotta Deal Wit' Dis (Gangsta Luv) was all over the radio. I was 11, and that's one of the songs that really got me into rap. In the early 90's, anything gangsta was going on the radio, because Gangsta Rap was the hottest form of rap at the time.
shade shiest - where i wanna be..
and thats mostly because of nate dogg...
Actually Money Owners was a biggest hit than Where I Wanna Be, mainly because of Timberland. Shade Sheist needs to prove he can handle a hit by himself though.
Bye Bye Baby, Daily, and Keep It On The Low also got a significant amount of radio play in the US, and his new album should get some more attention.
I figured that was only Cali radio, because when I was in high school all those songs where on the radio, but when I went to college in Minnesota, no one ever heard of nothing but Westside. But maybe Minnesota's lack of a true hip-hop station has something to do with it, but TQ ain't rap. Who knows.

WTF? "Where I Wanna Be" is easily Shade Sheists biggest song...PeACe

^ yup yup...

Some of this thread is just funny............like Mc Hammer is a one hit wonder!!!! Pray, 2 legit to quit, Cant touch this, etc guy had many hits.........just because one song is is most famous does not mean the others werent huge successes also
and how is kris Kross a one hit wonder? They did have JUMP and WARM IT UP!!!! two of the most popular songs of that era, both equally as popular as the other
Mack 10?-----ever heard of BACKYARD BOOGIE.........no way foe life is his only hit
and id say its a little early to call JKWON a one hit wonder
As for Shade SHeist, songs such as Money Owners and Wake Up can hardly be considered hits, let alone rap hits as most people havent even heard the songs........
TQ- in north america westside is tq's only hit, that is FACT! How can u call Keep it on the low a hit? noone liked it, not even gonna be released on an album.......definitely not a hit, if it was a big hit TQ would have it on his upcoming album
Besides, this thread is useless. A one hit wonder is someone who had a big hit song and was never successful again. People like Skee-Lo (even though his whole album was dope) and Paperboy are two of the more prominent one hit wonders in rap history.
-
Shit, MC Hammer had a couple of hit songs in '88, Let's Get it Started and Turn this Mutha Out. Remember, that was the song where he was dissin Run DMC if I remember.
2nd II None were not one hit wonders. They had 2 hits from that first album, Be True to the Game and If You Want It. SCC and Mack 10 one hit wonders? WTF?
True one hit wonders:
Tag Team - Whoop there it is
Sir Mixalot - Baby Got Back (yeah I know he released Posse on Broadway but he's known for the former)
Proper Dos - Mexican Power (that song got a lot of play on LA radio then they vanished)
Concious Daughters - Something to Ride To
Black Sheep - The Choice is Yours
Digable Planets - Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like That)
Tracey Lee - How We Get Down (I think that's the name of that song...he sounded like Method Man)
Militia - Burn
JJ Fad - Supersonic
Lighter Shade of Brown - Sunday Afternoon
ABC - Iesha (remember those 5 kids that rapped that Michael Bivins was trying to put on?)
Craig Mack - Flava in Your Ear

SCC commercially only had one hit, in the early 90's, U Gotta Deal Wit It (Gangsta Luv) and since they haven't had a song on the radio, but many classic albums. I was 11 years old, and I remember U Gotta Deal Wit It on the radio all the time, it was on the late night count down for 99.1 in Riverside, which plays nothing but pop music. Since, even on Power, I ain't heard a damn SCC song, and that's from LA/So Cal radio. I was expecting something with their other albums, not even a one time spot.
2nd II None, was Be True to the Game a nationwide hit. I know people outside of Cali heard of If You Want It, but I never heard of Be True to the Game.
agree with Sir Mix-a-Lot and Tag Team (I try to keep it west though, so I kick myself for not naming Mix-a-Lot), Prober Dos I agree with, because commercially he only had Mexican Power, after that I haven't heard his shit on the radio, (Hardtimes is a tight song but never got on the radio), I thought Black Sheep had more hits, just can't name them off the top of my head, never heard of Concious Daughters so I'll take your word, agree with Digable Planets, never really heard the Tracy Lee or Mafia songs, JJ Fad of course, Lighter Shade of Brown, well you gotta check yourself on that one, On A Sunday Afternoon in Cali was their big hit, but also on the radio was Homies, Latin Active, and Hey DJ. Also, Hey DJ was their big nation release of the Mi Viva Loca soundtrack, and had the video played on BET all the time, and I meet dudes from New York that knew of Lighter Shade of Brown through Hey DJ. Another Bad Creation and Craig Mack, I agree.

You're right about Lighter Shade of Brown. Latin Active was the jam, I completely forgot about that. It was all over Power 106, I remember. I don't think I ever heard Hey DJ or I just don't remember.
Anyone remember College Boys - Victim of the Ghetto? How about that song Helluva? I don't even remember who sang it. Also, I have to add Candyman - Knockin the Boots.
