"Tha Doggfather" I think is the one of the best albums from the West ever. There is hardly a wack track on that CD. A lot of people hate on it but I think it might be right with "Doggystyle" and if not it's definitely his 2nd best album. The production is flawless and it's real laid back. DJ Pooh and Daz produced most of it and the guests include Kurupt, Daz, Too $hort, Soopafly, Bad Azz, Technique, Nate Dogg, Warren G, and Tray Deee. Legendary shit for real, 1996.
1. Doggfather (produced by Daz) *best Daz beat ever*
2. Up Jump tha Boogie f/Kurupt (produced by DJ Pooh)
3. Sixx Minutes (produced by DJ Pooh)
4. Snoop's Upside Ya Head (produced by DJ Pooh)
5. Gold Rush f/ LBC Crew (produced by Arkim and Flair)
*6. 2001 (produced by DJ Pooh)

i never liked that "doggfather" track. i thought the beat was wack and repetitive.
daz has dozens of beats way hotter than that.
other than that, i agree with you. that album had some heaters:
snoop bounce
up jump the boogie
tear em off (me & my doggz)
2001
groupie
blueberry
doggyland
snoop's upside your head
goldrush
sixx minutes
i think the biggest problem is that the album didn't have the consistency of doggystyle, plus people weren't ready for that sound. there isn't really anything on doggystyle that's wack. doggfather had a couple tracks that were wack, like "freestyle conversation"; (and amusingly doggfather imho). but it also has heat, and people never seemed to appreciate the heat.
-
it was a cool album, i think it's underrated because most people including myself thought it was going to be as good as or even better than "doggystyle"

Yeah basically..people didn't realize, or seem to care, that Dre wasn't doing anything related to the album. Doggystyle was one of the best albums in history, and the best ever to some, and it was his debut, so he set his standards up to a level that was basically unreachable.
-
this album is classic...if it was his first release eveyrone would praise it, they were just expecting another doggystyle.
-
i can't say i'm a big fan of the record, but it definitely has a few great songs.
in my opinion, tha last meal is a lot better than tha doggfather, though.
-
dope album.but.people expected something( dre production) like cali love or natural born killer
-
no one understands, but to me that album is great, very original...not the replayed george clinton riffs dre did on most of the first one...just like the skit said..."ever since dre shook the speezot, word on the street is that..." you know the rest.it just goes to show the narrow one track mindedness of most consumers,no dre, they not checkin for it lolololol....
-
I thought it was his 3rd best album.
-
second best snoop album IMO. dj pooh did his thing on this. the only reason it wasnt any better because dre wasnt around to coach snoops' flow.
-
great album and snoops second best
-
i liked last meal better than tha doggfather
-
second best snoop album IMO. dj pooh did his thing on this. the only reason it wasnt any better because dre wasnt around to coach snoops' flow.
i think dre would be the last person snoop would listen to about his flow
-
oh yeah, as the others said, people were expecting another doggystyle. i think its a great album. people will appreciate it more if they give it another listen, compare it to the shit he's dropping now.
-
because its too west coast
-
because its too west coast
??? so was doggystyle...your point being is?
-
Easily snoops second best album , Doggyland's beat is just craaaaaazay , the whole cd is tight
-
Good question...me personally, I like the album a lot. Consistent production throughout the entire album, nice lyrics, etc...
-
Its a dope album and Snoops second best album but in some songs it sounds like Snoop is whispering...
-

why's that? snoops flow, delivery was always better when dre was there to coach it. thats what a producer does. like dude before me says, snoop whispered alot on the doggfather.
-
In my eyes its his best lp ever, cause he proved that he doesnt need dre to sound real good!Period!Chuuuch!
-
Lyrically it was better then Doggystyle but the production doesn't match up...Still a great album
-
i believe this is snoops 2nd best album....i liked dj pooh's beats too
peace
-
Tight Album, Downtown Assasins is a classic track IMO
-
^^ indeed and often forgotten....tray dee and daz ripped it better than snoop on that one 8)
peace
-
dope album
-
crazy album, snoop on some other shit on this...........this was back in the day when snoop was at his peak still and droppin crazy shit, his rhymes never been real complex but he spit shit like no other, and it sounds sick, i use to think what the nigga thinkin when he was making some of these joints on dogystyle n doggfather.....you'll get many rappers who are similar to others but you'll never get another snoop
peace
-
That's Snoop's best album imo...
-
real talk

it was actually The DOC that was coaching snoop

I think it's snoops best album lyrically, but the mixing on that album SUCKED. Some songs you could barely hear what snoops vocals, I think that's where he missed dre the most, snoop always sounds hungry on dre beats, and the beat never overpowers him, like it does sometimes on doggfather.
My other problem with doggfather is that it's the first time i found out snoop would use other writers for some of his shit. Blueberry was written by bad azz and kurupt, it tarnished his image in my eyes.
But i still like the album, 2nd best IMO
-
Definitely agree with what C-clamp posted, the mixing sucked big time. Why the fuck did DJ Pooh mix this the way he did?
-
Yup Tray Deee killed it on that track, with his first 2 lines GOD DAMN!!!!!!!!
-
Definitly is underrated. I hate the fact that peeps put such high expectations on it. Dope music is dope music. I was at Ball State when this album dropped, and our floor had that cd on repeat for months. No one bitched about it not being as good as doggystyle... we just rocked them both, and enjoyed good music. Snoops 2nd best, easily.

Snoop didnt rap on Blueberry just did some talking at the end. The mixing is terrible on some songs though
