I believe he was really askin.. and if so..

MARIAH is in another league..
she collects 9 figures simply for signing her name on the contract.

Not to mention that the R&B and Hip-Hop industries differ SIGNIFICANTLY.

But let's say Mariah decided she wanted to PYO..
She would be richer than Bill Gates.. her fanbase is undeniable!

why are artists dont get credits sometimes then?
Again READ THE CONTRACT.
some artist choose not to get paid but have their name credited.

Others want to get paid for their work no matter how significant or minute it may be.
it all depends on the mindset of the artist and the person to whom their are working for at that moment!
There is No legitimate or concise answer to that question.

Unfortunately in business especially in the Music business, you will get shafted by someone at some point.
what happens afterwards is very important. You can whine/moan, :'( or you can turn it to your advantage. ;)

By right you should get paid for whatever you input into a project-but if the budget is not enough, will you decide to cut your losses and say No.. :-\ ???
or work with what you have and try and do your best? ;)

Hope this helps!

Album sales are not based on how many people actually went out and bought the album..
It is based on how many RETAILERS and WHOLESALERS purchase album units in bulk..

When your favorite artist went Platinum.. some of them actually did have a Million+ people go and pick up copies..
others.. may have sold 15 copies.. but SHIPPED 1Million... makin them Platinum!

..this is nothing new.

as far as how much they get paid.. It depends on the deal.. but back in the day, it WAS cents!
I was one of, if not THE FIRST, *New* artist from the West to get an R&B budget for an album ($1Mil+)
AND.. the first to receive more than a dollar per unit sold.. under a major.. very rare!!

this was back in day...

fast forward to later in this decade..  We sold over 175K units collectively in 2006..
we sold units at 10 dollars even.. we pocketed a minimum of $8 a unit!

a KOCH deal gives artists 3 to 5 dollars a unit.. BUT.. they engage in recouping monies spent.

WE (PYO) pay for our own advertising, promo, etc.. so when we recoup.. we're essentially paying ourselves!

It gets no better than Putting Yourself Out.. otherwise.. dont u think I wouldve signed to Interscope or Universal by now?

and yes.. they offered. You thought Quik and AMG were the only west artists getting major attention!?

I wish I didn't have to keep explaining that MAINSTREAM MEDIA IS RAPE.

Furthermore.. who gives a fu*k if 1million people like you all at once........ if YOU DONT MAKE A PROFIT!

If I sell to only 1000 people.. I can stand to make 10K.. so do that 175 times.. and well.. u have enough money to run ur own PYO!

Peace & Respect
a kurupt4life i told you so, good info shade, keep moving them units and stacc'n them chipper jones my equal yell
got a good woman at home,& this broad i smashed be-foe

ring finger says, to don't pursue it,the "k-9" in me says
"ain't-nothing-to-it, but-to-do-it"/
but if we bang and i get caught OH-BOY-YA!/

That is some deep shit, Shade. You know the industry so damn well, you make me want to go independent. This rap shit is getting "easier" and "rougher" by the minute.

Now, what would you say about the internet industry? The only outlets I know so far are Apple iTunes, Napster and Amazon. Every one of those P2D (pay-to-download) services are making incredible revenue, but I don't know how or why the internet hustle is different from the physical hustle. Instead of CDs, vinyls or tapes, it's just MP3/WMA format (and let me remind all y'all, I hate DRM). And I'm being told, the internet hustle has more economical value than having to publish, print and ship physical media. In fact, how much does it cost to print, say, 1000 CDs, tapes or vinyls whether you on a major or independent deal?

Here's a cool story example: if you check out Pocos Pero Locos Rewind and hear the new Mr. Shadow interview with Crhymes of Tha C.O.R. (courtesy of dagosd.com), you'll hear how he made $350,000 on a mere 50,000 units with no airplay, no promotion, no respect.

Shade, here's a question I want to ask: is it still possible to pay/commission a well-known musician/artist for an appearance on an album even if you're unknown to the public or the mainstream? There were two artists I wanted to link up back in 2006, but a friend of his told me that one artist was bound by a major label contract which prevented him from working with unknowns or less-than-average artists. I'll PM you the explanation, but don't tell anyone.
