Talib Kweli actually got nominated for a Source award!!
« on: August 28, 2003, 12:34:41 PM »
Damn, the normally shit magazine has actually made a good choice for once.

Kweli has been nominated in the lyriicist of the year category. I dunno who else has been nominated in this category but hopefully Kweli will win it, give him a lot more exposure if he did.

hopefully he wins

<-----------Big Kweli fan, peep the sig

Most hip-hop is now keyboard driven, because the majority of hip-hop workstations have loops and patches that enable somebody with marginal skills to put tracks together,...

Unfortunately, most hip-hop artists gravitated towards the path of least resistance by relying on these pre-set patches. As a result, electric guitar and real musicians became devalued, and a lot of hip-hop now sounds the same.

The nominees for Lyricist Of The Year are:

Jay-Z
Nas
Talib Kweli
Scarface

Here's the article from Ballerstatus.net:

As the powerful and urgent voice of Hip-Hop music, The Source is pleased to announce both the nominees and new categories for The Source Hip-Hop Music Awards 2003. The Awards will take place in Miami on October 13th and air in primetime during sweeps on BET on Tuesday, November 11th, 2003 at 8:00 pm (ET/PT).

The Source Awards are the oldest and most prestigious awards covering Hip-Hop – the music and cultural revolution born on the urban streets of the United States that has captivated young people in the U.S and around the globe. The Source Awards showcase the best of Hip-Hop with the most vibrant, energetic and purely authentic awards ceremony. The Awards have become so popular that many view the eagerly anticipated event as the “Super Bowl of the Hip-Hop Generation.”

For the 2003 Awards, Lil’ Kim and Jay-Z lead the nominations with five each, including “Album of the Year.” Nelly, 50 Cent, Cam’Ron & The Diplomats each score four nominations. Scarface, Lil’ Jon & The Eastside Boyz, LL Cool J, The Clipse, Missy Elliott, Baby, David Banner, Ludacris & Disturbin The Peace, Pharrell and The Neptunes, and Eve all come in at three nominations each. Bone Crusher, Nas, Snoop Dogg, Slum Village, Field Mob and Ja Rule pull in two apiece.

This year’s Awards include new categories that celebrate emerging trends in Hip-Hop, including its potent international presence, the resurgence of dancehall-reggae and the unique voices from independent labels.

“The Source Awards 2003 show will take Hip-Hop back to the streets. By partnering with BET, we have the platform to show the world what real Hip-Hop is all about,” said Ray “Benzino” Scott, Co-Founder and Chief Brand Executive of the Source.

“The Source is proud to present the premier showcase for recognizing the incredible talents and creative genius of the Hip-Hop movement. It is truly inspiring to be able to bring together all of the leaders of the Hip-Hop community under one roof, for one night, to celebrate our generation’s most powerful and influential culture,” added David Mays, Co-Founder and CEO of The Source.

Talib has been nominated before in the same category back in 2001.

Nas is going to win. Jay-Z and Scarface have already won. Talib and GZA are not "mainstream" enough to win an award from the Source. They only award "popular" rappers (eg. Nelly won best album of the year with Country Grammar).

Other best lyricists of the year at the Source awards:
1994 - Snoop Doggy Dogg
1995 - The Notorious B.I.G.
1999 - Jay-Z
2000 - Eminem
2001 - Scarface
