Man us socals can be robbed of a lotta things.  I never knew about mac dre until he was murdered.  The most surprising is hearing from John Walsh when he talked about his murder on AMW, was that he was a nocal legend.  Of course down here, when you think of nocal legends, you think of too short, E40, digital underground but not mac dre.
True, but even in the North his popularity was still growing, and I honestly saw a lot more people get into him after he passed. Most people really got hooked on his music once they heard him, but people were slow to catch on.

That and "In Motion" were the joints that got me into his music, but through his jail stints, I stopped checking for him. Then, early 2000s my friend from Vallejo kept pumping him up and I got into him again, and his buzz kept growing. It's unfortunate, but death increases an artist's buzz. The one thing that I can fault with his music is that he didn't always rap over the best beats and a lot of guests were wack, but his wordplay is so creative that you have to respect that. And there's nothing wrong with getting into his music late, I was just kicking it with a guy who had just heard of him a few months ago and was all into Mac Dre now.

I never fucked with Dre heavy either til like the day after he died. Before that a few of my friends had some albums, but I didn't grow in to his music as much as I did post mortem. That being said, I think he's a very creative, animated  lyricist and person and he holds a top 10 spot in hip hop.

everyone he mentioned INCLUDING Mac Dre. you can add Luniz, Nickatina, C-Bo, and Celly Cel in there, along with Brotha Lynch and X-Raided. but Mac Dre should most definitely always be in the discussion of bay legends.
