3D Realms community manager Joe Siegler has updated the official company website with a photo of the team (seen left) and a simple goodbye.

"Thanks for being fans and for all your support," reads the short message.

Siegler tells us that the photo, taken today, preceded a team visit to the local cinema for a showing of Star Trek. A full 3D Realms staff page, once kept for internal use, has also been made public.

The news broke yesterday that after some 12 years of development on Duke Nukem Forever, 3D Realms had been forced to shut down due to funding issues.

While all 3D Realms employees have been let go, representatives have since confirmed that publisher Apogee Software is still in operation, and that Frontline Games' Duke Nukem Trilogy of handheld titles will make it to stores.

Whether we'll ever see a Duke Nukem Forever is another matter. Publisher Take-Two retains the publishing rights to the title, while 3D Realms, which owns the rights to the game and Duke IP, has made no signal as to its plans.

Either way, our sympathies again go out to the affected employees. Thanks for the memories, 3DR.

logic would say that they maybe should have thought about finishing and releasing the game when the money was going to start running out. kinda comical, but im sure it woulda been good...

nothing ground breaking but sure looked like it could have been fun.

Okka

I don't matter if 3D Realms went down, they been workin on Duke Nukem Forever since '97. I have a strong feeling it would have never came out, they was changin the engine of the game all the time. It's like Crooked I's album, it needs to be perfected and made all over again and again :D

it's a shame that Take 2 didn't put any money into this, if they did, they will pass the game to other developer and we will have the game finished in few months...I looks like dope old school FPS

they should have finished it with the quake 2 engine like valve did with half life.

Half-Life wasn't on the Quake engine. It used Valve's own GoldSrc engine that was derived from the Quake engine. Not entirely original, but so heavily modified it couldn't be called the Quake engine anymore.

Anyhoo...

There's all sorts of wild stories floating around about the development of this game. The wildest being that 3D Realms intentionally started out to do the game with the longest development cycle ever, basically doing mock-ups of pieces of a game instead of actually developing a real game, going on for 10 or so years before actually starting development on this "real" version of the game. Needless to say, take that with a grain of salt.

What's known though is the fact that they kept making Duke Nukem Forever for 12 years and never accomplished that. Epic failure.

The showcase reels that have been popping up (the ex-emplyess upload these on their sites for acquiring new jobs, from where they've spread) do show some cool moments. Based on those the game seemed pretty cool. But the truth won't ever be known unless the publisher TakeTwo assigns a new developer to the project.

they still had id's name on the bottom of the box. also the engine didnt get named goldsrc until a few weeks before the game shipped. magizines were still reporting it as the quake engine when it came out.

It's a shame because the game actually looked like it was going to be good/refreshing change, but now its not a good thing as other devs will see big budget games failing and maybe play it safe and make cookie cutter games.

Good ol' times.

Perhaps Bethesda will purchase Duke Nukem? Just kidding.
