ESPN.com has learned that unrestricted free agent Adam Vinatieri, who provided the winning field goals in two of the New England Patriots' three Super Bowl victories, has reached a contract agreement in principle with the Indianapolis Colts. There remains some work to be done on the contract, but the deal could be completed by Tuesday night.

Contract details were not immediately available.

Vinatieri would replace longtime Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt, the most accurate field goal kicker in NFL annals, who is also an unrestricted free agent. And the move for Vinatieri is fraught with irony, given the rivalry between the Patriots and the Colts.

A 10-year veteran, Vinatieri, 33, has converted 263 of 321 field goal attempts and 367 of 374 extra point tries in 160 games. He recently visited with Green Bay officials but left without a contract.

Vinatieri ranks at No. 7 on ESPN.com's Top 50 unrestricted free agents list.



lol he pulls a johnny damon and joins his rivals. i guess the colts felt that the missing piece to the puzzle must be the kicker. it would be funny if vanderjagt signs with the pats and they meet in the afc championship and vanderjagt wins the game for the pats in the rca dome in like overtime or sumthin.

I doubt they will meet in the AFC Championship.

Neither kicker is really any better than the other. Yeah Mike missed that kick in the playoffs but the way Indy was playing they deserved to lose. I don't think replacing one amazing kicker with another amazing kicker means anything. My bet is this is a money thing. Vanderjagt probably asked for a lot of cash, or got in another fight with Peyton.

vanderjagt did ask for a lot of money. i think he was lookin to be the highest paid kicker in the nfl.  both r good kickers. historically vanderjagt is the most accruate kicker ever but vinatieri is Mr. clutch and has 3 rings. i think vinatieri might do good with the colts as he also doesnt have to battle the elements as he's playin indoors half the time.

Glad Vanderfuck is gone. Missed every single big kick he ever had in the playoffs. For those who don't follow the colts, he's missed 4 big playoff field goals in the last few years. Much rather have a clutch kicker.

we just have to see how the departure of Edgerin James affects the Colts but it was a good move for them.

Good move by the Colts, but they paid too much for him. The Colts won't be as good next year cause they've under estimated the vaule of James. Also the Dolphins are going to win the AFC East & the Pats will be lucky to make the playoffs.
