personally I thought "Soul on Ice" was the West Coast "Illmatic", true the production was a little off but "Illmatic" didn't have great production either...I liked "Rasassinaton" a little more than most as well

Yeah, I always thought that was a good analogy for it.  A West Coast Illmatic.  I had no problem with the beats, because I think when you have a lyricist like Ras, less is more with the beats.  You need something more toned down and simplistic so that you can let the lyrics carry the track.

Since you mentioned "Evil That Man Do' in that new topic that it is a deadly serious autobiohraphy track, it reminded me that Ras talked a lil bit about it in this interview. The reason that "Soul On Ice" was so powerful is that because Ras ended up in California Youth Authority jail for that manslaughter, he had a change of mind and he was witing verses day by day for like 2-3 years. That's fucked up but it provided a classic LP for hip hop
