Playstation 2 Online: What You Need To Know...
« on: August 15, 2002, 09:54:09 PM »
Alright, for the average gamer who plays on a console, the online world means nothing to them. Why play online when you can have 4 players playing at once at the same place? However, there is a demand for online console gaming and even though it has only been demanded by the extreme gamers, sony, microsoft and soon nintendo, will try and make this the next big thing for console gaming. So, the xbox is all set for online capabilities, but, the PS2 isn't, not yet at least. In 11 days, on the 27th of August, the PS2 will launch the little toy that will allow its users to play online, its called the Network Adaptor (pictured below)....

this little device will plug into the back of your ps2 and basically you are all set to play online... but you do need an internet connection... all connections will work from 56k to Broadband connections. Most ISP (internet service providers) will be compatible with the ps2's online abilities.

Now here comes the confusing part... whats the cost? There is no cost to play online with the ps2, however... there is a catch... certain games... like Final Fantasy 11 will charge for online gaming... how else are they going to cover the cost of their server use?? So Sony will definetly not charge you with a dime, except for the Network which is $39.99... but the game developers can charge you... EA Sports has said that all of this years game will be free for use, but they can't promise next year... the very anticipated game SOCOM will also be free for use... however developers believe most RPG games will charge you for their server use, since RPG's take up a lot of the servers capabilities.

Ok, so you got the details of the Network Adaptor, you got the scoop on cost, but... is there anything else... YES....and this is important...

Most people who have an internet connection use it for their computer... but now people will use it for their consoles as well... what if you want to be playing ps2, xbox, gamecube online and mom and pop want to browse the computer... you can't have both running on the net unless you buy a hub or router...This little item can cost you up to $90 alone, but it will  allow you to send your connection to your console and to your computer... and any other device.... otherwise you  might be stuck unplugging the cord everytime you want to switch... this could be hassle... and yes it will work with out this device, but it may become an inconvinience...

so that's all... long, but full of the information... Sony is shipping 250,000 of these little network adaptors across our country on the 26th, and they'll be available on the 27th...it will come with a mail-in coupon for you to send in... this little coupon will assure you a free copy of Twisted Metal Black Online, which will be sent back to you... this is not the same as last years twisted metal... this is the online version... and its free after you mail in the coupon... so that's the real deal on the network adaptor... good looking... all said and done

Pretty Bias if you ask me... considering its a Xbox site, but honestly... with the Xbox... you have to pay 50 bucks... with the PS2... it is determined by the developer whether or not it's going to cost money...also... Microsoft can't answer questions on a Squaresoft title, a Electronic Arts title... you'll have to go the developers for issues with their games to get the scoop... and sony is working on a headset that will be universal...

ill admit... microsoft seems a lot more easy... it has since they announced it during the E3 conference, but their users are gonna have to drop 50 bucks for online use, while ps2 owners have the choice... free or pay... for me, a college kid with not a lot of money, id like to play for free when they offerr it...
