Jean Chretien's (PM Of Canada) views......
« on: September 14, 2002, 08:52:32 AM »
Great loads of codswallop rained down on Jean Chretien yesterday for allegedly snubbing America on its sacred Sept. 11 anniversary.

The usual right-wing suspects were out in force. Alliance MP John Reynolds found the PM's remarks "shameful," his colleague Randy White was "ashamed," retired major-general Lewis MacKenzie said they "ill conceived."

Good grief. You'd think Chretien had singled out the United States as bearing full responsibility for the attack, when in fact he said nothing of the sort.

His comments concerned not only the U.S. but all rich western democracies, and the growing gap between them and poor nations.

The gulf between rich and poor breeds resentment, often fuelled by new greed on the part of the West, and resentment in lands of oppressive poverty can lead to fanaticism.

"You know, the poor, relatively, are getting poorer all the time. And the rich are getting richer all the time," Chretien observed.

This is true not only around the world but right at home in British Columbia, where the gap between rich and poor continues to widen with all the accompanying resentment.

"You cannot exercise your powers to the point of humiliation for others," Chretien said -- but again he took pains to avoid singling out the U.S.

"That is what the Western world, not only the Americans, the Western world has to realize" there are "long-term consequences if you don't look hard at the reality in 10 or 20, 30 years from now."

Chretien concluded by saying he thinks "the Western world is going to be too rich in relation to the poor world," leading to more charges of "being arrogant, self-satisfying, greedy and with no limits.

"And the 11th of September is an occasion for me to realize that it's even more."

Every word of this is true. Chretien is not justifying the attack, he's merely noting some of the conditions that can breed such insanity.

It is neither "shameful" nor "ill-conceived" to say the gap between rich and poor is growing. Nor is it a new message; people have said it for years.

Only last month Jacques Chirac, the French prime minister, warned of the "inconsistencies of globalized capitalism and the excesses it engenders, the massive development gap between North and South and the frustration it creates."

Ah yes, globalization. We've all heard for years how it will level the world's economic playing field and help poor countries out of poverty.

In fact globalization has made many small countries worse off because of tariff and other demands made by the richest nations for entry into the "big leagues."

Check out Africa, or many parts of Latin America or South America. They still face incredibly restrictive trade rules from the rich guys.

That's what Chretien was on about, and his critics barked up the wrong shrub. They would have been better off to admit he was correct, and then ask what he's doing about it.

Not nearly enough. Canada's foreign aid will increased fractionally in the next few years but remains far below Chretien's Red Book promise of 1993 and below that of the Brian Mulroney Conservatives.

The PM has made modest efforts to improve the lot of Africa and often speaks out against huge agricultural subsidies in Europe and the U.S. that make it impossible for poorer nations to compete.

Still, the gap gets worse. It will only improve when all Western leaders admit their role in the economic knee-capping of struggling nations and do something tangible to end it.

As far as Canada insulting the States, I think not. Foreign Affairs Minister Bill Graham even congratulated George W. Bush yesterday when he agreed to work through the UN Security Council on the question of Iraq and not barge in on his own.

Can we all simmer down now?

He says some real shit in there.

Here are some more comments from Bill O'Reilly:

"Well, it is very painful to admit we were right again.  Of course, I'm being facetious about the pain.

Canada shows its true colors.  That is the subject of the "Talking Points" memo.

Even as President Bush was making his case for forcibly removing Saddam Hussein at the U.N., Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien said this, quote, "I do think the Western world is getting too rich in relation to the poor world.  And we're looked at as being arrogant, self-satisfying, greedy, and with no limits.  And September 11 is an occasion for me to realize it even more," unquote.

Prime minister says he's not blaming the USA for the 9/11 attacks, but others are outraged.

Now, I'm not outraged, because I expected something like this.  Chretien is a socialist who believes the West owes something to radical Muslims and to the rest of the world.  As we have reported, his government allows nearly everyone into Canada even if they have false documentation.

Of course, this puts all of us at risk.  Chretien doesn't care.

The prime minister is against removing Saddam Hussein without a worldwide mandate, which will never happen because many nations hate the U.S. and will do anything to hurt us.  Privately, the Bush administration's furious with Chretien and with Gerhard Schroeder of Germany for not supporting the USA in its quest to rid the world of Saddam Hussein.

Talking Points [this is the name of this segment] is tired of world leaders apologizing for a killer.  Once again, Saddam Hussein violated the Gulf War treaty, end of story.  He has to go, or the 299 Americans killed in the Gulf War will be disrespected.

It is absolutely insane to allow a murderous dictator to violate a treaty that was forged with American blood.

If Jean Chretien doesn't understand that, no one can help him.  It is up to the good citizens of Canada to give him the boot.  What we can do is Americans is to send a message to the prime minister that we think his opinions and attitudes are misguided.  You can e-mail him care of the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. at webmaster@canadianembassy.org.  That's webmaster@canadianembassy.org.  And let him know how you feel.

Once again, Americans must assert our power to confront not only evil but stupidity as well.  Jean Chretien wants us to understand why 24 innocent Canadians were killed, along with 3,000 other people, on 9/11.  He wants us to understand what drives the terrorists.

Well, I want the prime minister to understand this.  He has just insulted every family who lost a loved one on 9/11.

And that's The Memo."

"One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. "Which road do I take?" she asked. "Where do you want to go?" was his response. "I don't know," Alice answered. "Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."
