but I do have to say, people do tend to be much less critical towards older bands and place them in a higher category cause they´re legends. It depends on how you define "greatest". The legacy of a band just influences people when they decide who´s "best", if subliminally. Even if it´s supposedly about the music itself, that always plays a role...that´s why so many people consider a above-average-but-far-from-incredible MC named 2pac "the best rapper ever".

That said, i gotta say the Chilis are indeed a great band. Their music is creative, versatile, some of their funk rock is incredibly precise and hard to play (believe me, i got friends in funk rock bands saying that), they put out some of the best music of the 90´s, they can play anything from funk to Under-The-Bridge-type stuff to even Ska, they have come up with creative and great blends of different genres, they are known for some of the best live performances.....and yeah, i just love them

^ hey man i agree with you, but in my book, their legendary status will never be unbeaten... i know its sucks , but thats just the way it is... but i love the chili peppers def 1 of the best in the 90s

I do agree with you in ways. I don't tend to seperate music into genres very effectively. For example, I noticed you but Jimi on your list, but he could easily be considered a Blues artist, as could Zeppelin be seen as a Blues or Metal band as opposed to Rock. The Doors as well had many Blues elements. Music is music to me.

Pearl Jam was better than Nirvana do they could be in the top 5. Pumpkins were great too.


Lincoln; did you mean The Who when you said Guess Who? Guess Who were good and all but I can't see them being near the top 5. I think their second incarnation "BTO" was better as a whole. These Eyes, and American Woman are great but the rest of the stuff just lacks in my opinion.


As for my top 5. I could never pick a top 5 but I'll try and name 5 from each decade (no solo performers)

50s was really more of a solo era with great back up bands so I'll start in the 60s.

^lol you spelled some of the bands names wrong, and c'mon man the police better than AC/DC? and the band a top 5 band of all time in the 60's? but it's all good man, if you really listen to that stuff you got some good taste.

2. The Beach Boys-for a while they were either right there up there with the beatles or ahead of them
3. The Jimi Hendrix Experience-Propbably the single greatest musical artists
4. The Doors-They created 'mood' music
5. The Rolling Stones- they have many classic singles

the 70's

1. Pink Floyd- Music experimentation at its finest
2. Led Zeppelin-one of the best pure raw bands
3. Black Sabbath- the most influencial band from 1970 on
4. Ac/Dc- they were the nirvana of the late 70's
5. Aerosmith- One of the greatest male singers of all time with one of the greatest riff guitarists

the 80's

1. Metallica- If Bach or Ludvig had an electric guitar and overdrive this is what they'd sound like
2. Guns N Roses- the greatest debut album of all time period
3. Van Halen- c'mon eddie and diamond dave
4. u2-they made the joshua tree, nuff said
5. Iron Maiden- like Metallica but to a lesser extent.

the 90's

1. Red Hot Chili Peppers- easily the most influencial band of the 90's
2. Nirvana-They get credit for something that they DID NOT DO, but don't get credit for what they DID do, spoke to a generation
3. Nine Inch Nails- took rock production to another level
4. Korn- like em or hate em they're the band that every heavy metal band has tried to be since 96 on
5. Rage Against the machine-helped set the tone of the decade more and more with every album
