Week Two (and Three): Belated Yet Bulging...
By : Rud
Ok
people you can lay off the inbox now, my email account is bulging and half of
them are complaints – did yall love “The Edit(or) Suite” or what? I can’t
believe the response and thus anger that I didn’t make the Sunday deadline for
week two. My apologies, I had some family issues and commitments I’m sure you
understand.
As a result I have opted to merge week two and three for a special one off and
drop it two days early!
The past fortnight has been the usual foray of madness that the music industry
throws at us on an almost daily basis. Perhaps one of the best pieces of news
recently has been the foot in the ass for Dave Mays and Raymond "Benzino"
Scott over at The Source. Yes they are gone courtesy of a judge who lifted the
restraining order the pair imposed earlier in the week and a majority vote by
the board members saw a four out of six majority show them the door
Now don’t get me wrong Dave Mays founded the so called "Hip-Hop Bible" and
over the years it has been a credible information source and respected
publication but lets be honest, Dave clearly missed the chapter in the
business handbook called Conflict Of Interest – perhaps he was in bed with a
manager. So, does this usher in the era of once more credible features and the
promise of no more ‘subtle’ Benzino adverts – or is it too little too late,
only time will tell under the reign of their new chief officer Jeremy Miller;
I don’t envy the task.
Ice Cube has revealed that he is opting to take the independent route with his
latest solo offering “Laugh Now, Cry Later” and my god what a bold step; all
credit to Cube for shunning the major label approach. At the end of the day he
can push units on his own merit and standing plus the fact that his finances
are sitting more than pretty – in fact Cube while you are thinking along those
lines hit me up and lets talk, you can help us fund a label for talented new
westcoast artists; seriously. The album will feature production from Lil Jon,
Swizz Beatz and Scott Storch as well as appearances from Snoop Dogg on two
records, Juvenile on another and he is in talks with the Diplomats’ Juelz
Santana; Cube step back and just think for a moment and get back to the good
ideas like releasing independently. Oh and hearing a verse from Mr Short Khop
wouldn’t go a miss either.
Congratulations to DJ Warrior of Cali Untouchable DJ’s who has been nominated
for Mixtape DJ of the Year award by The Source, now although credibility has
yet to be restored over at the offices of the magazine that accolade is
deserved and the recognition a mark of respect for the work he has been
putting in. What-up Warrior, keep it moving.
Did ya’ll see Mitchy Slick hit us up with some hot new music, now that’s love
right there and we appreciate it, if you didn’t check it yet hit up the news
section and the archives to hear it. We will be catching up with Mitchy soon,
look out for “Urban Survival Syndrome” in the next few months from the
incredible new label Angeles Records; they we’re responsible for two of the
best underground records of 2005 in Self Scientifics “Change” and DJ Muggs Vs
GZA’s “Grandmasters.” Lookout for more heat this year with the Mitchy Slick
release and a DJ Warrior album.
Tha Alkaholiks release their final group album this week, a sad day in many
respects however the long awaited album will keep fans happy for now; as long
as they keep their promises and drop their solo material – Tash especially its
been too long, I need that “Rap Life” sound back in my life for the ’06. For
those that haven’t seen the video to the single “Flute Song” yet check the
news section and archives.
Power 106 this week opted to drop the Fantastik Four Crew, which features DJs
Mr. Choc and J. Rocc, C-Minus and Truly OdD, who over the past 8 years have
provided an outlet for underground Hip-Hop in Southern California, the
nation's second largest market. Fantastik Four group members said there was no
official warning of the cancellation and that listeners will not receive a
farewell show. What?! Can you believe that the station has done this without
giving reasons for the cancellation of the weekly three-hour show? As with
anything it will come down to listeners and the lack of audience however
Friday Night Flavas paved the way in many respects for Power 106 in opening
its doors to Hip-Hop and to their current slogan "Where Hip-Hop Lives." Lets
be fair now and if it truly is "Where Hip-Hop Lives" then Power need to
re-vamp the ailing show (if that is indeed the reason) rather than scrapping
it altogether and removing an outlet for the underground hip-hop market. Can I
get a HELL YEA!?
In other news Eminem officially resurrected the marriage to his high school
sweetheart and until recent months most hated acquaintance; Kim, in an
intimate ceremony in Michigan. Best wishes to the Bride & Groom from dubcnn,
we hope happiness finds you this time. DMX is out of Rikers Island and has
signed with Columbia Records, the label that first saw his talent in 1992;
“Here We Go Again” is set to hit stores in the summer; X just take your time
and don’t make us say Here we go again if it mirrors “Grand Champ.”
Until next week, soak in what I have said, spread the message and slap me if
you don’t agree – but if you do then shower me with gifts and love…in reality
I know it will be in the form of either email praise or outright abuse; either
way your supporting dubcnn and I thank you all.
