interview THE BLOKHEDZ  (August 2009) | Interview By: Chad Kiser

Considered the least bankable of hip-hop’s four elements, hip-hop graffiti is also the least respected by law, being the only one of the four elements you can be prosecuted for if caught in the act, and in some cases it’s a federal offense. Today aerosol art continues to survive in the urban underground scene and the fashion world, while also quietly maintaining an unrealized presence in modern comic books and graphic novels. Check out the obvious graffiti styles of Humberto Ramos and Lesean Thomas for reference.

Chad Kiser and guest contributor Norff Wess sat down with Brandon Schultz, who is the creative director of Imajimation studios, and one of the main conceptualists behind the innovative comic book to the animated webisode series The BLOKHEDZ.

interview STAT QUO  (June 2009) | Interview By: Chad Kiser & Jonathan Hay

So many hip-hop fans are familiar with Stat Quo’s Shady/Aftermath history, and the controversy surrounding his overly-delayed project. To a label surrounded by the elite giants—the three-headed monster known as Eminem, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent—Stat came, he saw, and he seemingly failed to conquer. He sat frustrated for years waiting for his music to be brought to the world, to no avail. Now, speaking from the heart about Eminem, Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine and everything far and in between, a humble (but true and transparent) Stat Quo opens up to share his side of the story with Jonathan Hay and Chad Kiser for this Dubcnn exclusive.

Without sacrificing his respect for those involved, Stat speaks candidly about his journey seeking the emancipation of his art, in what turned out to be an undoubtedly controversial conversation. And seeing how this interview took place in California, we thought it only appropriate to include his song “In California” produced by Focus. Don’t miss this. )

interview RBX  (May 2009) | Interview By: Chad Kiser & Jonathan Hay

While everybody is talking about Eminem and his virtuoso, pharmaceutically-conceptual album, Relapse, we wanted to go back in time and take a look behind the scenes of one of Eminem's greatest albums—well, possibly one of the greatest albums ever, period. The Marshall Mathers LP.  So, Jonathan Hay and Chad Kiser of Dubcnn quickly caught up with RBX, who was featured on that classic Marshall Mathers LP on the extraordinary song, “Remember Me”—which also featured a phenomenal verse from Sticky Fingaz.  “Remember Me” is a definite, hands down, fan favorite all across the world for its amazing lyrical performance by Eminem, RBX and Sticky Fingaz together, and a menacing track produced by Dr. Dre and Mel-Man. We got a couple of questions in with RBX, as he looks back and reminisces on history.  If you don't remember, “Remember Me”, in the words of Clinton Sparks…GET FAMILIAR!

interview JELLY ROLL (May 2009) | Interview By: Lil Jay

It's already been 10 years since Jelly Roll had his first major placement on Snoop Dogg's "No Limit Top Dogg" album with the song "Party With a D.P.G.", so it's safe to say that the man has paid his dues with the work he's put in over the years. Even though he has produced and sang for other major names such as Dr. Dre, Busta Rhymes, Xzibit, Redman and The Game just to name a few, Jelly Roll is not a household name (yet) and he could still be labeled as a secret weapon in the Hip-Hop industry.

This year, the Oklahoma born, Cali living artist is about to change all that as he has finished his long overdue solo debut. Jelly was blessed with an incredible talent so it's only right that he's finally getting his own shine with this new album called "Mood Swings". As the title says, the project is filled with a large diversity of moods and different sounds like I haven't heard in a long time.

In conjunction with the album release, Jelly reached out to Dubcnn to talk about the new project. In this exclusive interview, he explains his meaning behind the title and gets
into the concept of the album. Jelly also talks about his track record, compares himself to other producers and speaks about staying behind the scenes. Last but not least he gives us an update on his Gain Green label imprint.

interview L.V.  (April 2009) | Interview By: Chad Kiser & Jonathan Hay

Today, one of the most successful songs in hip-hop history almost never was. The song in reference is called “Gangsta’s Paradise” and if it weren’t for the persistence of the original song owner, L.V, the world would have never experienced such a smash single. The song could have been performed with Prodeje from South Central Cartel, who L.V. first reached out to for the rap parts, however, schedules got in the way. Then, L.V. had to literally follow Coolio around for weeks to get him to do the song.

Dubcnn got the opportunity to sit down with L.V. Mr. Large Variety, one of the original members of the infamous South Central Cartel, to reflect back on “Gangsta’s Paradise”—the paradigm shift that has since left its mark on hip-hop forever. In this Dubcnn exclusive, L.V. shares with us his own personal feelings on his partner, Coolio’s recent and highly-publicized troubles with the law as he gets transparent and opens up about his near-death experience many years ago, to his current rebirth back into music through LRT Music Group

interview MIMS  (April 2009) | Interview By: Jonathan Hay

His hit song oozed out of car stereos and violated club speakers everywhere, so much so that the hook is forever imprinted into our brains. Yes, there are obvious great benefits to having such a super successful song, but on the other hand, the pressure to supersede that mega-hit status would seem overwhelming at times – not to mention hearing the phrase “This is why I’m hot” reiterated over and over again by everyone you come in contact with for years to come would start to get annoying pretty fast.

Now MIMS is back to challenge the success of that dance-inducing phenomenon with another soon-to-be chart-topping single called “Move If You Wanna” from his self-proclaimed diverse album Guilt, hitting stores on April 7th.

Dubcnn sits down with MIMS to talk about music, greed, Ryan Seacrest, how to be hot in a hooptie, and the turntables that turned the tables in this Dubcnn Exclusive – and this is why we’re hot (you know we couldn’t resist that one).
